Ethico-Political Engagement and the Self-Constituting Subject in Foucault.Lenka Ucnik - 2018 - Ethics and Bioethics (in Central Europe) 8 (1-2):63-79.
Foucault is critical of the tendency to reduce all social and political problems according to predetermined ends and verifiable procedures. For Foucault, philosophical activity is a condition of possibility for the articulation of the question of the self. Inspired by his work on the desiring subject, Foucault begins to explore the ethical and political implications of self-care for modern day concerns. He presents an account of self-care that centres on developing an attitude that questions the personal relationship to truth, and (...)

Coworking with Roma: Exploration of Slovak Majority’s Cooperation Intention Using Content Analyses and Networks of Free Association.Lenka Nôtová, Miroslav Popper, Branislav Uhrecký & Juraj Petrík - 2021 - Human Affairs 31 (2):194-211.
This study, theoretically based on integrated threat and image theory, explored the mental constructs produced by the Slovak majority in relation to cooperation with the Roma minority and differences in thinking about different Roma demographic groups. In Slovakia, prejudice towards Roma people is a long-standing phenomenon. In this study there were 228 participants, mostly young adults, who produced 22 categories of associations, explored using content and network analyses. The frequency of category associations in the first and second research group was (...)

Making Pure Science and Pure Politics: On the Expertise of Bypass and the Bypass of Expertise.Lenka Zamykalová, Tereza Stöckelová & Zdeněk Konopásek - 2008 - Science, Technology, and Human Values 33 (4):529-553.
This article is based on a case study of a long-term public controversy over the construction of a highway bypass. Two principal variants of the bypass were proposed. One of them began gradually to appear preferable, increasingly attractive for experts, but remaining only on paper. In the meantime, however, the other variant became more realistic, pushed through mainly by local politicians and actually constructed. This article shows how purification of science from politics played a key role in the development and (...)

Farmers' Markets in Prague: A New Challenge Within the Urban Shoppingscape.Jana Spilková, Lenka Fendrychová & Marie Syrovátková - 2013 - Agriculture and Human Values 30 (2):179-191.
Farmers’ markets are a relatively recent phenomenon in Prague, Czechia. The first of them was opened in the autumn of 2009, but the real boom started in the spring/summer of 2010. The survey introduced in this paper is concerned with the study of alternative food networks and farmers’ markets. It offers the results of methodological triangulation based on: (1) the data obtained via the questionnaire survey, (2) market organizers’ reflections on the customer structure, motivation for shopping at farmers’ markets and (...)

Good and Evil at School: Bullying and Moral Evaluation in Early Adolescence.Lenka Kollerová, Pavlína Janošová & Pavel Říčan - 2014 - Journal of Moral Education 43 (1):18-31.
We investigated how adolescents morally evaluated hypothetical bullying and defending protagonists and whether these evaluations related to behavior in bullying as nominated by peers. Exploratory factor analysis resulted in four factors for the evaluation of the hypothetical bullies: Evil soul, Contempt, Cowardice, and Deviance, and five factors for the evaluation of the hypothetical defender: General admiration, Courage, Cool, Empathic care, and Fair justice. Corresponding scales were constructed. The findings showed that bullying positively correlated with evaluating the hypothetical bullies using Cowardice (...)

Rules and Exemptions: The Politics of Difference Within Liberalism.Maria Paola Ferretti & Lenka Strnadová - 2009 - Res Publica 15 (3):213-217.
In what ways might we best, and justly, allow for cohabitation between individuals and groups with plural conceptions of the good? Confronting this question, students of political philosophy in the past two decades have encountered a routine contrast between liberal universalism, with a focus on equal individual rights and uniform application of the law, and on the other hand various versions of a 'politics of difference'(...).

Ethics, Politics and the Transformative Possibilities of the Self in Hannah Arendt and Michel Foucault.Lenka Ucnik - 2018 - Philosophy and Social Criticism 44 (2):200-225.
A wave of interest in Hannah Arendt and Michel Foucault as bio-political thinkers was initiated by publication of Giorgio Agamben’s Homo Sacer. The intellectual connection of these two figures is, however, broader than their bio-political considerations. Arendt and Foucault both offer detailed accounts of an ethico-political self. Both Arendt’s and Foucault’s later work explores the meaning of living ethically and politically. By examining the relationship between self, ethics and politics, I suggest there are two general points of convergence in Arendt (...)

The paper explores the possibilities of using applied qualitative research to help to achieve changes in the context of education. It presents three case studies: an evaluation of an educational software package which may be implemented nationally; an assessment of the impact of a 1:1 Technology Rich Learning Environment experimental project conducted in two Slovak elementary schools; and international comparative research on the curricula of psychology courses in secondary schools. The authors ask three questions: 1. does qualitative research have the (...)

Theme of Roma poverty and their general social situation is very demanding in terms of finding the solution, since the large rate of Roma population is (...)

Knowing One’s Own Self: An Analysis of Vivekananda’s Approach to One’s Identity.Laxminarayan Lenka - 2018 - Journal of the Indian Council of Philosophical Research 35 (2):267-278.
A successful declaration of one’s identity in saying “ahaṃ Brahmāsmi” is a result of knowing one’s own self as indistinguishable from Brahman. The non-difference between oneself and the Brahman is one’s true identity, and it goes without saying, knowledge of one’s true identity constitutes the correct knowing of one’s own self. That the said non-difference is upheld by vedānta, and we need to put this ideal non-difference into practice is the crux of Vivekananda’s practical vedānta. Vivekananda gives certain reasons for (...)

Tentokrát však nebyl východiskem diskusí programový text některého z účastníků, ale Platónův výklad o nejvyšších rodech v dialogu Sofistés. Tomuto textu se zde dostalo trojí velmi odlišné interpretace, kterou bychom snad mohli vzdáleně přirovnat k liternímu, morálnímu a alegorickému neboli naukovému pochopení posvátného textu (...)

Due to the low number of youth experiencing upsetting meetings and the dominance of quantitative research designs in the area, the current state of knowledge does not provide a clear view of what happens at meetings that youths find upsetting. Self-disclosure is the key prerequisite for the provision of help and professional intervention in the case of mental difficulties. Self-harming behaviour is a problem in this area that has been a remarkably strong taboo, and as such, this form of behaviour is often hidden. The most at risk category in this context are adolescents who demonstrably receive the least psychological intervention and for whom self-harm is a high-risk behaviour. This study observes the prevalence of self-harming behaviour in a sample of (...)

    Filosofická Logika?Jaroslav Peregrin - unknown

This essay offers an overview of the diversity of women’s prose writing that emerged on the Czech cultural scene in the post-communist era. To that end it briefly characterizes the work of eight Czech women authors who were born within the first two decades after World War II and began to create during the post-1968 era of ‘normalization’. In this broad sense they belong to a single generation. With rare exception their work was not officially published in their homeland until (...)
