Gene therapy for neurodegenerative disorders and malignant brain tumors.Lan Chiang, Eric P. Flores, Dennis Y. Wen, Walter A. Hall & Walter C. Low - 1995 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 18 (1):52-53.
Gene therapy approaches have great promise in the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders and malignant brain tumors. Neuwelt et al. review available viral-mediated gene therapy methods and their blood-brain-barrier (BBB) disruption delivery technique, briefly mentioning nonviral mediated gene therapy methods. This commentary discussed the BBB disruption delivery technique, viral and nonviral mediated gene therapy approaches to Parkinson's disease, and the potential use of antisense oligo to suppress malignant brain tumors.

Sanctioned by Government? The Home Offce, Peterloo and the Six Acts.Nathan Bend - 2019 - Bulletin of the John Rylands Library 95 (1):14-29.
The role of the Home Office in the Peterloo Massacre remains contentious. This article assesses the available evidence from the Home Office and the private correspondence of Home Secretary Viscount Sidmouth to contest E. P. Thompson’s claim that the Home Office ‘assented’ to the arrest of Henry Hunt at St Peter’s Fields. Peterloo is placed within the context of government’s response to political radicalism to show how the Tory ministry had no clear counter-radical strategy in the months leading up to (...)

Peter Abelard (1079–1142 ce) was the most wide‐ranging philosopher of the twelfth century. He quickly established himself as a leading teacher of logic in and near Paris shortly after 1100. After his affair with Heloise, and his subsequent castration, Abelard became a monk, but he returned to teaching in the Paris schools until 1140, when his work was condemned by a Church Council at Sens. His logical writings were based around discussion of the “Old Logic”: Porphyry's Isagoge, aristotle'S Categories and (...)

A Definition Of Human Death Should Not Be Related To Organ Transplants.C. Machado, I. Kerridge, P. Saul, M. Lowe & J. McPhee - 2003 - Journal of Medical Ethics 29 (3):201-202.
Kerridge et al recently published a paper in the journal about organ transplantation and the diagnosis of death.1 Although I appreciate the authors’ efforts to present their arguments about such a controversial issue, I found some inconsistencies in this article that I would like to discussWhen Kerridge and his collaborators discussed the origins of the concept of brain death, they emphasised that after the report of the medical consultants on the diagnosis of death to the US President’s Commission was published (...)

Powerful Particulars:Review Essay on John Heils From an Ontological Point of View. [REVIEW]E. J. Lowe - 2006 - Philosophy and Phenomenological Research 72 (2):466-479.
John Heil's new book (Heil 2003) is remarkable in many ways. In a concise, lucid and accessible manner, it develops a complete system of ontology with many strikingly original features and then applies that ontology to fundamental issues in the philosophy of mind, with illuminating results. Although Heil acknowledges his intellectual debts to C. B. Martin (p. viii), he is unduly modest about his own contribution to the development and application of this novel metaphysical system. A full examination of the (...)

Zen masters of China: the first step east: Zen stories.Richard Bryan McDaniel & Albert Low (eds.) - 2012 - Singapore: Tuttle Publishing.
Zen Masters of China presents more than 300 traditional Zen stories and koans, far more than any other collection. Retelling them in their proper place in Zen's historical journey, it also tells a larger story: how, in taking the first step east from India to China, Buddhism began to be Zen. The stories of Zen are unlike any other writing, religious or otherwise. Used for centuries by Zen teachers as aids to bring about or deepen the experience of awakening, they (...)

Freedom, low and imagination the lectures of F.w.J. Schelling in 1800-1810s.P. V. Rezvykh - 2019 - RUDN Journal of Philosophy 23 (1):7-18.
The gives the detailed analysis of the ratio of freedom and imagination in an unpublished manuscript written by F.V.Y. Schelling, which contains the materials for the lecture course read at Erlangen University in 1820-1821. The author focuses on the question of imagination as a condition for the possibility to unfold the modal differences that provide the hierarchy of predicative definitions. The article shows that both the draft philosophy of mythology and the philosophy of revelation are a direct continuation of the (...)

  35. Abstraction, Properties, and Immanent Realism.E. Jonathan Lowe - 1999 - The Proceedings of the Twentieth World Congress of Philosophy 2:195-205.
Objects which philosophers have traditionally categorized as abstract are standardly referred to by complex noun phrases of certain canonical forms, such as ‘the set of Fs’, ‘the number of Fs’, ‘the proposition that P’, and ‘the property of being F’. It is no accident that such noun phrases are well-suited to appear in ‘Fregean’ identity-criteria, or ‘abstraction’ principles, for which Frege’s criterion of identity for cardinal numbers provides the paradigm. Notoriously, such principlesare apt to create paradoxes, and the most intuitively (...)

Double jeopardy and the use of QALYs in health care allocation.P. Singer, J. McKie, H. Kuhse & J. Richardson - 1995 - Journal of Medical Ethics 21 (3):144-150.
The use of the Quality Adjusted Life-Year (QALY) as a measure of the benefit obtained from health care expenditure has been attacked on the ground that it gives a lower value to preserving the lives of people with a permanent disability or illness than to preserving the lives of those who are healthy and not disabled. The reason for this is that the quality of life of those with illness or disability is ranked, on the QALY scale, below that of (...)

Reciprocal Relativity of Noninertial Frames and the Quaplectic Group.Stephen G. Low - 2006 - Foundations of Physics 36 (7):1036-1069.
The frame associated with a classical point particle is generally noninertial. The point particle may have a nonzero velocity and force with respect to an absolute inertial rest frame. In time–position–energy–momentum-space {t, q, p, e}, the group of transformations between these frames leaves invariant the symplectic metric and the classical line element ds2 = d t2. Special relativity transforms between inertial frames for which the rate of change of momentum is negligible and eliminates the absolute rest frame by making velocities (...)

    Precipitation in the Fe-Mo and Fe-Au systems. Higgins & P. Wilkes - 1972 - Philosophical Magazine 25 (3):599-623.
A general hypothesis of atom size effects for G.P. zone formation is discussed in this paper and results are presented of precipitation in the systems Fe-Au and Fe-Mo. Techniques used are resistivity measurements and electron microscopy. In the Fe-Mo system it is shown that after initial cluster formation during the early stages of ageing after the quench, further growth ceases and vacancies anneal out into dislocation loops. The activation energy for the initial clustering was 1·3 ev whilst the excess vacancy (...)
