Growth of urban areas, the corresponding increased demand for utility services and the possibility of new types of utility systems are overcrowding near surface underground space with urban utilities. Available subsurface space will continue to diminish to the point where utilidors (utility tunnels) may become inevitable. Establishing future sustainable strategies in urban underground engineering consists of the ability to lessen the use of traditional trenching. There is an increasing interest in utility tunnels for urban areas as a sustainable technique to (...) avoid congestion of the subsurface. One of the principal advantages of utility tunnels is the substantially lower environmental impact compared with common trenches. Implementing these underground facilities is retarded most by the initial cost and management procedures. The habitual procedure is to meet problems as they arise in current practice. The moral imperative of sustainable strategies fails to confront the economic and political conflicts of interest. Municipal engineers should act as a key enabler in urban underground sustainable development. (shrink)

In the section titled Irreversibility and the Power to Forgive in the Human Condition, Arendt claims that “the discoverer of the role of forgiveness in the sphere of human affairs was Jesus of Nazareth”. In what follows, we would like to approach the ancient use of the Greek verb sungignôskô which, in our opinion, fulfills the same role that Arendt finds in this alleged Christian novelty —the “mutual exoneration of what has been done”— not only to understand what would the actual discovery Arendt attributes to Jesus imply, but because we believe claiming the Greeks were unaware of the faculty of forgiveness is, if not false, at least inaccurate. The ambiguous-cue task is composed of two-choice simultaneous discriminations involving three stimuli: positive (P), ambiguous (A) and negative (N). Two different trial types are presented: PA and NA. The ambiguous cue (A) served as an S- in PA trials, but as an S+ in NA trials. When using this procedure, it is typical to observe a less accurate performance in PA trials than in NA trials. This is called the ambiguous-cue effect. Recently, it was reported in starlings that the ambiguous-cue (...) effect decreases when the stimuli are presented on an angled (120°) panel. The hypothesis is that the angled panel facilitates that the two cues from each discrimination are perceived as a compound, precluding value transfer via a second-order conditioning mechanism. In this experiment, we used pigeons and a flat panel. Nevertheless, our data were quite similar to the previous data in starlings. We conclude that the form of the panel cannot explain the ambiguous-cue effect. Several alternatives to be explored in future experiments are suggested. The riddle of the ambiguous-cue problem still remains unsolved. (shrink)

este trabajo se dividirá en dos puntos: i) exponer las similitudes y las diferencias entre la teoría del materialismo eliminativista de los esposos Churchland y la teoría del funcionalismo de Daniel Dennett con respecto a su conceptualización sobre la concienci; y ii) analizar de manera crítica los planteamientos del materialismo eliminativista y del funcionalismo con respecto a su conceptualización acerca de la conciencia. Además, se sostendrá que en el ámbito de las ciencias cognitivas no existe un consenso, como tampoco una (...) base teórica y conceptual sobre qué es la conciencia. Así mismo, se tendrá en cuenta que, sobre el concepto de conciencia se indaga por la pertinencia del término ―si existe o no―; y de existir: si responde a patrones deterministas o si es un fenómeno ajeno a toda realidad empírica; lo cual lleva, de manera inevitable, a indagar por el debate acerca del libre albedrío. The purpose of this paper is to study the philosophical basis of the architecture of two Artificial Intelligence systems (AlphaGo and Hide and Seek). The problem considers the elucidation of the epistemological distinction between “knowledge” and “intuition” and questions whether the fulfillment of a programmed metric can be considered as a product of knowledge or, as an example of intuitive thinking. Through the analysis of both examples, it is shown that achieving the desired objective (winning a game of Go and (...) developing new hiding strategies) is not derived from the system’s architecture, but from the AI’s creativity to achieve the desired result; in that sense, it can be confirmed that certain intelligent systems are capable of creative and intuitive thinking. El objetivo del presente artículo es estu- diar los fundamentos filosóficos de la arquitectura de programación en dos sistemas de Inteligencia Artificial (AlphaGo y Hide and Seek). El problema dilucida la distinción epistemológica de los concep- tos “conocimiento”, “intuición” y “abducción”, para definir si el cumplimiento exitoso de una métrica programada, por parte de una computadora, es con- dición suficiente para atribuirle un comportamiento inteligente. A través del análisis de ambos ejemplos se muestran dos cuestiones: i) el cumplimiento exitoso de un objetivo programado ofrece nuevos recursos de conocimiento, ii) dichos conocimientos dependen de la ejecución de un programa cuyo pro- cesamiento es desarrollado por una IA y, por tanto, las operaciones superan las capacidades intelectivas humanas. Las conclusiones apuntan a que las com- putadoras son recursos de conocimiento especiales de comprobación de hipótesis. (shrink)

Kierkegaard’s distinction of chatter from silence gives forgiveness a linguistic spin. How can forgiveness be spoken? Is forgiveness something to be said and heard? Is saying it aloud saying too much, or too little? What is said when (and if) forgiveness is said? Should forgiveness be chatted away, or reserved in silence? In this article we establish that in mythical thought there is, as a natural quality, an expression of universality. Following Cassirer’s Philosophy of Symbolic Forms, we show that through the expressive function of myth it is possible to develop an expressive way of thinking or a pre-logical type of knowledge. We then propose an interpretation of Oedipus at Colonus in order to show that it offers a plausible resource to relate the individual and the community, and that the framework in (...) this tragedy works as a complex sign and symbolic path to delineate a form of expressive relationship through which it is possible to propose the unification of the individual with the community. Según el neokantiano, la relación cuerpo-alma conforma la relación básica para el desarrollo de la “Fenomenología del conocimiento”, sin embargo, a través del proceso dialéctico es necesario negar la forma material para lograr la forma espiritual de la cultura por lo que la organicidad corporal, al parecer, debe anularse en esta progresión dialéctica. El objetivo (...) es analizar y describir cómo la forma del cuerpo fundamenta el escenario mítico expresivo, pero también la fase representativa del lenguaje y la significativa de la ciencia, permitiendo la unidad en todo el proceso de la construcción del conocimiento y la forma de la cultura.In this paper is studied the function of human body and its relation with the culture, in Ernst Cassirer’s “Philosophy of Symbolic Forms”. According to the neokantian, the relation soul-body conforms the basic relation to develop the Phenomenology of knowledge, nevertheless through the dialectic process is necessary to deny the material form to achieve the spiritual form of the culture, so the organic form, apparently, needs to be annulled in this dialectic progression. The aim is to analyze, and describe, how the form of the body appear in expressive mythical stage, but also in representative stage of language and significative stage of science, allowing the unity in the entire process of the construction of knowledge and the form of culture. El presente artículo estudia los fundamentos metodológicos de la obra cartesiana como antecedente filosófico en la estructuración de la ‘función’ y el ‘símbolo’ en la obra de Cassirer. Dicha incorporación se habría desarrollado a través de dos momentos: en el primero se reconoce el valor de los estudios científicos y matemáticos propuestos por el francés como una vía indispensable para el estudio de las sustancias naturales del mundo; el segundo, critica la falta de continuidad metodológica empleada en el estudio de (...) la sustancia humana. Aflicción no es un término que mencione Nietzsche a propósito del hombre moderno, sin embargo, y ésta es la tesis que se intenta demostrar, esta palabra responde a la manera en la que actúa el moderno en relación a su «voluntad de poder», es decir, ante el carácter propenso a dominar que para Nietzsche se manifiesta en todas las funciones básicas de lo vivo. Es el modo o los caminos por los que el moderno ha buscado dominar, lo que da (...) muestra de su congoja ante su «voluntad de poder».Nietzsche plantea que la única realidad a la que tenemos acceso es a la de nuestra vida instintiva. Es decir, que la única expresión de la vida de la que nosotros tenemos cierto tipo de experiencia «directa»1 es la de nuestro mundo de apetitos y pasiones. Ahora bien, ¿cómo explicar nuestra vida instintiva? Pues mediante una tesis que la designe y defina desde su carácter inteligible, a saber, la «voluntad de poder». Por lo tanto, la «voluntad de poder» no define a la vida entendida como otra realidad externa a nosotros, sino que designa el carácter de la única expresión de la vida a la que tenemos acceso directo, esto es, de nuestro mundo de apetitos y pasiones. En este sentido el hombre es un conglomerado de voluntades de poder y el cuerpo es un conjunto de centros vitales que luchan entre sí. (shrink)

Aunque con el paso del tiempo, las tendencias político-liberales cambiaron completamente su sentido, no se puede entender directamente en qué puede consistir algo como la democracia, esto apelando a ejemplos de la desigualdad descarada que se vive en todo el mundo. Este ensayo no pretende enumerar todos los casos de desigualdad, tampoco se propone hablar del significado de la democracia a lo largo de la historia; el motivo es hablar, a un nivel muy general, del sentido de la democracia en (...) la educación como un ideal que tiene que prevalecer en lo académico. Retomaremos algunos personajes visionarios que cambiaron la forma en el cómo se educa, expondremos de qué manera es importante su método educativo para la concepción de una educación, ligada a un ideal democrático. Finalizaré llegando, de una manera muy particular, al concepto de democracia en la educación y él por qué se considera que es un valor integral para educar. (shrink)

A long-standing theme in discussion of perception and thought has been that our primary cognitive contact with individual objects and events in the world derives from our perceptual contact with them. When I look at a duck in front of me, I am not merely presented with the fact that there is at least one duck in the area, rather I seem to be presented withthisthing (as one might put it from my perspective) in front of me, which looks to (...) me to be a duck. Furthermore, such a perception would seem to put me in a position not merely to make the existential judgment that there is some duck or other present, but rather to make a singular, demonstrative judgment, that that is a duck. My grounds for an existential judgment in this case derives from my apprehension of the demonstrative thought and not vice versa. (shrink)

Buena parte de sus postulados se consideraron como fundamento para el desarrollo de una «Pedagogía constructivista», la cual fundamentó distintos modelos curriculares (...) en Hispanoamérica. Si bien es que esta teoría en la actualidad ha sido, sino superada, intercambiada por un modelo centrado en los «saberes para la vida», ello no implicó que su desplazamiento obedeciera a una evaluación exhaustiva que demostrara la inviabilidad del modelo o los fundamentos piagetanos; el desuso, entonces, obedeció a un «cambio» de paradigma, en lugar de a un agotamiento o refutamiento de los principios psicológico- pedagógicos que constituían el modelo psicogenético del ginebrino. This book defends antitheodicism, arguing that theodicies, seeking to excuse God for evil and suffering in the world, fail to ethically acknowledge the victims of suffering. The authors argue for this view using literary and philosophical resources, commencing with Immanuel Kant's 1791 "Theodicy Essay" and its reading of the Book of Job. Three important twentieth century antitheodicist positions are explored, including "Jewish" post-Holocaust ethical antitheodicism, Wittgensteinian antitheodicism exemplified by D.Z. Phillips and pragmatist antitheodicism defended by William James. The authors argue (...) that these approaches to evil and suffering are fundamentally Kantian. Literary works such as Franz Kafka'sThe Trial, Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot, and George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four, are examined in order to crucially advance the philosophical case for antitheodicism. En este trabajo se establece que el objetivo de las Humanidades es la forma-ción universal del ser humano acorde a su propia singularidad. Sin embargo, de la tensión entre el objetivo y la realidad surge el dilema de cómo se alcanza dicha finalidad. A partir del concepto de “imagen” y “símbolo” en la pedagogía de Comenio y en la filosofía de Cassirer, argumentaré –siguiendo al pedagogo– que la relación entre el singular y el universal es posible a través de una (...) metodología didáctica, que asume la «imagen» como «símbolos» para promover los principios universales en todos los seres humanos. A través del neokantiano sostendré que el concepto de «imagen» es la forma de coordinar la concepción del sujeto con los principios universales, por medio de «formas simbólicas» específicas. A lo largo del trabajo haré notar que con ambas teorías se puede pensar la labor general de las humanidades. (shrink)

The given is the state of a mind in its primary engagement with the world. A satisfactory epistemology—one, it turns out, that is foundationalist and includes a naïve realist view of perception—requires a certain account of the given. Moreover, knowledge based on the given requires both a particular view of the world itself and a heterodox account of judgment. These admittedly controversial claims are supported by basic ontological considerations. I begin, then, with two contradictory views of the world per se (...) and the structure one experiences. I draw out the consequences of these two views for what intentionality is. The two views yield incompatible accounts of the given. The definitive spontaneity of the one account, and passivity of the other, can be understood in terms of the structure (or lack thereof) in the given. In defense of the claim that a structured given is not an apt epistemic basis, I examine an attempt to found an epistemology on such an account in light of the so-called myth of the given. I maintain that the given, if it is to provide some justification for taking the world to be a particular way, must be unstructured. To support this, I first discuss a significant problem with traditional foundationalism. I then argue that a satisfactory (foundationalist) epistemology requires the rejection of the orthodox propositional view of judgment in favor of a non-propositional, reistic view. (shrink)

ABSTRACT Empathy is relevant to sociomoral development, especially in relation to prosociality and the penalization of acts as faults and crimes. The objective of this research was to test whether empathy is a predictor of prosociality and of perceptions of seriousness of delinquent acts among research participants in Argentina and Spain. The Argentinian sample comprised 215 high school and university students. The Spanish sample comprised 199 university students. The proposed theoretical model showed good fit in both countries. Although empathy was (...) found to predict prosocial conduct more than the perception of the seriousness acts as offenses and crimes, empathy was a significant of both prosocial conduct and perception of the seriousness acts as faults and crimes. Thus, the importance of empathy in morality was supported for both countries, supporting the influence of in different cultural context. (shrink)
