Weyl’s Philosophy of Physics: From Apriorism to Holism.Christophe Eckes - forthcoming - Philosophia Scientiæ.
In this paper, I intend to describe the evolution of Weyl’s philosophy of physics during the period 1918-1927. In particular, I will recall that he developed different versions of “apriorism” between 1918 and 1923: first a so-called “speculative” apriorism associated with his unified field theory and second a conception of a priori knowledge mainly inspired by Husserl’s _ Wesensanalyse _ with his work on the problem of space. I will also show that Weyl’s “holism”—i.e., the thesis according to which only (...)

Weyl’s Philosophy of Physics: From Apriorism to Holism.

Chaucer and the Pseudo Origen De Maria Magdalena: A Preliminary Study.John Mccall - 1970 - Speculum 46 (3):491-509.
In the Prologue to the Legend of Good Women Lord Cupid makes some sharp charges against Geoffrey Chaucer, love poet. He accuses Chaucer of slandering Love's servants, and of hindering devotion to Love's rule by his translation of the Roman de la Rose ; he claims that Chaucer has libeled women by making “in Englysh ek the bok/How that Crisseyde Troylus forsok.” And he concludes by chiding the poet for what he has omitted telling — the woe that women have (...)

Magdalena Jaworska-Wołoszyn On the Pantheon of Plethon’s LawsOf all the surviving fragments of Plethon’s Laws there emerges a holistic vision – that of a truly original philosophy. The last of Plethon’s works consists of many issues analyzed from different perspectives. The main purpose of this article is the presentation of Plethon’s hierarchy of gods. In the light of Plethon’s philosophy, the pantheon itself is the foundation of an original and controversial metaphysics. Indeed, knowing the divine order determines the cognition (...)

According to the eidetic reduction Ingarden rejects any colloquial opinions about how the existence of a musical composition, so that he holds that musical work is not the same nor the mental experience, or the performance, or to the music notations. The article proposes an analysis of the recent best-seller “Da Vinci Code”, by Dan Brown. Several keys of interpreting the novel are sketched – from deconstructing the accuses of plagiarism and blasphemy to analyzing the role of feminism and new-age religiousness in the plot making. In the end, the author comparatively examines the novel and the Mel Gibson movie “The Passion of Christ”, in an attempt to better situate the figure of Christ in recent cultural products.

We discuss the semantic significance of a puzzle concerning ‘ought’ and conditionals recently discussed by Kolodny and MacFarlane. We argue that the puzzle is problematic for the standard Kratzer-style analysis of modality. In Kratzer’s semantics, modals are evaluated relative to a pair of conversational backgrounds. We show that there is no sensible way of assigning values to these conversational backgrounds so as to derive all of the intuitions in Kolodny and MacFarlane’s case. We show that the appropriate verdicts can be (...)

The article analyses the history of the Einfühlung concept. Theories of ‘feeling into’ Nature, works of art or feelings and behaviours of other persons by German philosophers of the second half of the nineteenth century Robert and Friedrich Vischer and Theodor Lipps are evoked, as well as similar theory of understanding (Verstehen) by Wilhelm Dilthey and Friedrich Schleiermacher, to which Dilthey refers. The meaning of the term Einfühlung within Edith Stein’s thought is also analysed. Both Einfühlung and Verstehen were criticized (...)

There is an unresolved paradox concerning the role of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in consumer behavior. On the one hand, consumers demand more and more CSR information from corporations. On the other hand, research indicates a considerable gap between consumers’ apparent interest in CSR and the limited role of CSR in purchase behavior. This article attempts to shed light on this paradox by drawing on qualitative data from in-depth interviews. The findings show that the evaluation of CSR initiatives is a (...)

Purpose of review: What is the relationship between rationality and mental health? By considering the psychological literature on depressive realism and unrealistic optimism it was hypothesized that, in the context of judgments about the self, accurate cognitions are psychologically maladaptive and inaccurate cognitions are psychologically adaptive. Recent studies recommend being cautious in drawing any general conclusion about style of thinking and mental health. Recent findings: Recent investigations suggest that people with depressive symptoms are more accurate than controls in tasks involving (...)
