  2. Tuning Frontiers of Efficiency in Tissue P Systems with Evolutional Communication Rules.David Orellana-Martín, Luis Valencia-Cabrera, Bosheng Song, Linqiang Pan & Mario J. Pérez-Jiménez - 2021 - Complexity 2021:1-14.
Over the last few years, a new methodology to address the P versus NP problem has been developed, based on searching for borderlines between the nonefficiency of computing models and the presumed efficiency. These borderlines can be seen as frontiers of efficiency, which are crucial in this methodology. “Translating,” in some sense, an efficient solution in a presumably efficient model to an efficient solution in a nonefficient model would give an affirmative answer to problem P versus NP. In the framework (...)

    From NP-Completeness to DP-Completeness: A Membrane Computing Perspective.Luis Valencia-Cabrera, David Orellana-Martín, Miguel Á Martínez-del-Amor, Ignacio Pérez-Hurtado & Mario J. Pérez-Jiménez - 2020 - Complexity 2020:1-10.
Presumably efficient computing models are characterized by their capability to provide polynomial-time solutions for NP-complete problems. Given a class ℛ of recognizer membrane systems, ℛ denotes the set of decision problems solvable by families from ℛ in polynomial time and in a uniform way. PMCℛ is closed under complement and under polynomial-time reduction. Therefore, if ℛ is a presumably efficient computing model of recognizer membrane systems, then NP ∪ co-NP ⊆ PMCℛ. In this paper, the lower bound NP ∪ co-NP (...)

With your eyes again fixed on the speaker, and the movement of her lips a clear sense of the source of the sound will (...)

    Martin Luther's Experiential Theology as a Model for Faith‐Science Relationships.Klaus Nürnberger - 2010 - Zygon 45 (1):127-148.
. The approach of experiential realism could indicate where science and faith deal with the same reality, where science questions faith assumptions, and where faith goes beyond the mandate and method of science. Although prescientific, Martin Luther's theology is the classical prototype of an experiential theology. We experience God's creative power in all of reality. We discern its regularities through observation and reason. So faith opens up all the space needed by science. However, experienced reality is highly ambiguous. It (...)

    The Martin Buber Reader: Essential Writings.Martin Buber - 2002 - Palgrave-Macmillan.
There is no adequate understanding of contemporary Jewish and Christian theology without reference to Martin Buber. Buber wrote numerous books during his lifetime (1878-1965) and is best known for I and Thouand Good and Evil. Buber has influenced important Protestant theologians like Karl Barth, Emil Brunner, Paul Tillich, and Reinhold Niebuhr. His appeal is vast--not only is he renowned for his translations of the Hebrew Bible but also for his interpretation of Hasidism, his role in Zionism, and his writings (...)

Verification (Bewahrung) in Martin Buber.Martin Kavka - 2012 - Journal of Jewish Thought and Philosophy 20 (1):71-98.
Abstract The work of Martin Buber oscillates between talk in which transcendence is experienced and talk in which transcendence is merely postulated. In order to show and mend this incoherence in Buber's thought, this essay attends to the rhetoric of verification ( Bewährung ), primarily but not solely in I and Thou (1923), both in order to show how it is a symptom of this incoherence, and also to show a broad pragmatic strain in Buber's thought. Given this pragmatic (...)

The aim of this paper is to set out some of the ontologies amongst which some forms of anti-realism must select. This provides the appropriate setting for presenting an alternative realist ontology. The argument is that the choice between the varieties of anti-realism and realism is inevitably a choice between ontologies.

Shifting From Research Governance to Research Ethics: A Novel Paradigm for Ethical Review in Community-Based Research.Jay Marlowe & Martin Tolich - 2015 - Research Ethics 11 (4):178-191.
This study examines a significant gap in the role of providing ethical guidance and support for community-based research. University and health-based ethical review committees in New Zealand predominantly serve as ‘gatekeepers’ that consider the ethical implications of a research design in order to protect participants and the institution from harm. However, in New Zealand, community-based researchers routinely do not have access to this level of support or review. A relatively new group, the New Zealand Ethics Committee, formed in 2012, responds (...)

There is widespread agreement that an adequate understanding of the nature of science is a critical component of scientific literacy and a major goal in science education. However, we still do not know many specific details regarding how students and teachers learn particular aspects of NOS and what are the most important feature traits of instruction. In this context, the main objective of this review is to analyze articles from nine main science education journals that consider the teaching of NOS (...)

External Validity and Libraries of Phenomena: A Critique of Guala's Methodology of Experimental Economics: Martin K. Jones.Martin K. Jones - 2011 - Economics and Philosophy 27 (3):247-271.
Francesco Guala has developed some novel and radical ideas on the problem of external validity, a topic that has not received much attention in the experimental economics literature. In this paper I argue that his views on external validity are not justified and the conclusions which he draws from these views, if widely adopted, could substantially undermine the experimental economics enterprise. In rejecting the justification of these views, the paper reaffirms the importance of experiments in economics.

No Inner Remigration: Martin Heidegger, Ernst Jünger, and the Early Federal Republic of Germany: Daniel Morat.Daniel Morat - 2012 - Modern Intellectual History 9 (3):661-679.
Martin Heidegger and Ernst Jünger rightly count among the signal examples of intellectual complicity with National Socialism. But after supporting the National Socialist movement in its early years, they both withdrew from political activism during the 1930s and considered themselves to be in “inner emigration” thereafter. How did they react to the end of National Socialism, to the Allied occupation and finally to the foundation of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1949? Did they abandon their stance of seclusion (...)

Head or Tail? De Morgan on the Bounds of Traditional Logic.Víctor Sánchez Valencia - 1997 - History and Philosophy of Logic 18 (3):123-138.
This paper is concerned with De Morgan?s explanation of the validity of arguments that involve relational notions. It discusses De Morgan?s expansion of traditional logic aimed at accommodating those inferences, and makes the point that his endeavour is not successful in that the rules that made up his new logic are not sound. Nevertheless, the most important scholarly work on De Morgan?s logic, and contrary to that De Morgan?s mistake is not beyond repair. The rules that determine his new logic (...)

In this note we reproduce the book reviews that De Morgan wrote on Boole's and Jevons's first logical works. The most notable property of these documents is the mere fact of their existence and the absence of any reference to them in the specialized literature.

Rawdon Wilson's "On Character" raised a great many questions, and I should like to deal with lesser matters before going on to those of more consequence. He has found in my work the Fallacy of Novelistic Presumption. To commit this unnatural act is to assume "that the novel possesses a history that is independent of other modes of fiction and that it may be discussed independently of the history of literature." Let me say at the outset that I am not (...)

Epigenetic and transcriptional variability contribute to the vast diversity of cellular and organismal phenotypes and are key in human health and disease. In this review, we describe different types, sources, and determinants of epigenetic and transcriptional variability, enabling cells and organisms to adapt and evolve to a changing environment. We highlight the latest research and hypotheses on how chromatin structure and the epigenome influence gene expression variability. Further, we provide an overview of challenges in the analysis of biological variability. An (...)

    Love's Constancy: Mike W. Martin.Mike W. Martin - 1993 - Philosophy 68 (263):63-77.
‘Marital faithfulness’ refers to faithful love for a spouse or lover to whom one is committed, rather than the narrower idea of sexual fidelity. The distinction is clearly marked in traditional wedding vows. A commitment to love faithfully is central: ‘to have and to hold from this day forward, for better for worse, for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death us do part… and thereto I plight [pledge] thee my troth [faithfulness]’. It might surprise someone, who knew only On Liberty, to hear J. S. Mill called the father of British socialism. That would sound a careless bid for a respectable pedigree, on a par with hailing King Canute as father of the British seaside holiday. Mill is passionate there about making the individual a protected species, not to be interfered with even for his own good, unless to prevent harm to others. He is so passionate that government seems at times to (...)

    The Computational Complexity of Tissue P Systems with Evolutional Symport/Antiport Rules.Linqiang Pan, Bosheng Song, Luis Valencia-Cabrera & Mario J. Pérez-Jiménez - 2018 - Complexity 2018:1-21.
Tissue P systems with evolutional communication rules are computational models inspired by biochemical systems consisting of multiple individuals living and cooperating in a certain environment, where objects can be modified when moving from one region to another region. In this work, cell separation, inspired from membrane fission process, is introduced in the framework of tissue P systems with evolutional communication rules. The computational complexity of this kind of P systems is investigated. It is proved that only problems in class P (...)

The nature of the organic. On the scientific significance of Aristotelian biology. The core thesis of the paper is that the constitution of biological science begins with a conceptual innovation with far-reaching consequences with effect up to the present: by conceiving the parts of living beings as organs, Aristotle laid the foundation stone for a functional explanation of animate nature. Comparative anatomy is thus transformed from a merely descriptive to an explanatory theory. The point of the discussion is above all (...)
