  1. From the Mendeleev Periodic Table to Particle Physics and Back to the Periodic Table.Maurice R. Kibler - 2007 - Foundations of Chemistry 9 (3):221-234.
We briefly describe in this paper the passage from Mendeleev’s chemistry (1869) to atomic physics (in the 1900’s), nuclear physics (in 1932) and particle physics (from 1953 to 2006). We show how the consideration of symmetries, largely used in physics since the end of the 1920’s, gave rise to a new format of the periodic table in the 1970’s. More specifically, this paper is concerned with the application of the group SO(4,2)⊗SU(2) to the periodic table of chemical elements. It is (...)

    The Anatomy of Historical Knowledge. [REVIEW]P. M. R. - 1978 - Review of Metaphysics 32 (1):144-145.
In 1938 Maurice Mandelbaum published his well-known work, The Problem of Historical Knowledge, an insightful study of relativism, judgments of fact and value, causation, and the philosophy of history. Consequent to the publication of this work, the author noted increased interest in these problems, beginning with Carl Hempel’s "The Function of General Laws in History," and R. Collingwood’s posthumous work, The Idea of History, muted interest in the "fact" and "value" problems of the 30s in favor of the kinds (...)

The advent of the post-Stalin "thaw," particularly the period after 1956, was marked by a spectacular expansion in the publishing of translated Western writing and also, on occasion, of editions in the original languages: the virtual ban on import of Western books was, as of 1975, never relaxed. The more permissive political atmosphere favored the publication of a vastly larger variety of Western authors and titles and provision for the Soviet public of much larger quantities of such books in the (...)

Acquaintance with the Absolute: The Philosophy of Yves R. Simon, Essays and Bibliography.Robert Royal - 1999 - Review of Metaphysics 53 (1):202-204.
Yves R. Simon is one of the great and—outside the Catholic intellectual orbit—greatly neglected philosophers of the century. A student of both science and philosophy in his native France, Simon brought great lucidity of thought and an economy of style to some of the central questions that have vexed contemporary public and private life. When he came to the United States in 1938, he began publishing a series of concise but wide-ranging studies of democratic government, authority, epistemology, ethics, politics, natural (...)

Maurice Blanchot is perhaps best known as a major French intellectual of the twentieth century: the man who countered Sartre's views on literature, who affirmed the work of Sade and Lautreamont, who gave eloquent voice to the generation of '68, and whose philosophical and literary work influenced the writing of, among others, Jacques Derrida, Gilles Deleuze, and Michel Foucault. He is also regarded as one of the most acute narrative writers in France since Marcel Proust. In __Clandestine Encounters__, Kevin (...)

    On Maurice Mandelbaum’s “Determinism and Moral Responsibility”.Manuel R. Vargas - 2015 - Ethics 125 (3):854-856,.
It is sometimes instructive to reflect on a problem as it appeared before our current philosophical presumptions became ingrained. In this context, Maurice Mandelbaum’s “Determinism and Moral Responsibility” is of particular interest. Published in 1960, it appeared only a few years before the wave of work that gave us much of our contemporary understanding of moral responsibility, free will, and determinism. Mandelbaum’s account repays reconsideration. Mandelbaum argues that (1) there is an underappreciated threat to “determinist” or compatibilist accounts of (...)

Maurice Blondel is well known as the philosopher of Action. His work is too vast and too rich however to be confined within such a category. In fact, it Contains a real metaphysics of being, as this book of Dr. École’s shows quite clearly.

  46. Phenomenology of Civilization: Reason as a Regulative Principle in Collingwood and Husserl.Maurice M. Eisenstein - 1999 - Upa.
Phenomenology of Civilization explores the philosophy of Edmund Husserl and R.G. Collingwood, two of the most influential philosophers of the twentieth century. Husserl founded phenomenology, which has had a direct effect on contemporary philosophy, and Collingwood, though less formally known, is still one of the most commonly read twentieth century philosophers. Maurice Eisenstein examines their work in relation to recent philosophy, particularly focusing on existentialism, Heideggerian phenomenology, and postmodernism. He brings these two philosophers together because they were contemporaries of (...)

    Understanding Phenomonology—David R. Cerbone. [REVIEW]John K. O’Connor - 2007 - International Philosophical Quarterly 47 (4):486-488.
"Understanding Phenomenology" provides a guide to one of the most important schools of thought in modern philosophy. The book traces phenomenology's historical development, beginning with its founder, Edmund Husserl and his "pure" or "transcendental" phenomenology, and continuing with the later, "existential" phenomenology of Martin Heidegger, Jean-Paul Sartre, and Maurice Merleau-Ponty. The book also assesses later, critical responses to phenomenology - from Derrida to Dennett - as well as the continued significance of phenomenology for philosophy today. Written for anyone coming (...)
