Durocher and colleagues argue that Norman Daniels’s notion of just health could provide a useful framework for decreasing inequities in access to assistive technology. I argue that it would provide limited help for two reasons. First, Daniels’s reliance on normal species functioning as the goal of health care and his assumptions regarding the impact of normal species functioning on reasonable life projects create substantial difficulties for application to assistive technology. Second, although Daniels’s requirements for distributive justice provide a critical starting (...) point for any discussion of health equity, these requirements appear already met within current assistive technology funding schemes. The author applies Albert Hirschman's "Exit, Voice and Loyalty" framework to the dilemmas faced by humanitarian aid workers in complex settings where local or international political and military realities may "taint" the purposes and uses of aid. She reviews the pro and con arguments surrounding the difficult choices of whether to go or not, whether to stay or leave and whether to speak out or remain silent in such circumstances. Because international humanitarians insert themselves into circumstances that are not their (...) own where they see there is need for a humanitarian response, the author suggests a fourth category of choice should be added to Hirschman's three - namely that of "engagement." This option involves entering and/or staying, coupled with a quiet, off-the-record voice intended to work with and try to change from within nefarious circumstances. Concluding that none of the four options is "pure" in that all have direct impacts on the welfare and likelihood of survival of suffering people, the author argues for making each decision on its own particular merits, weighing both the personal/moral and practical/political realities of that situation. She offers guides for how such decisions may best be made, relying on differences of analyses and opinion offered by colleagues to provide grounding for one's own difficult choice. (shrink)

This article combines my journey in Feminist Theology from Liberation to Reconciliation, with a deep appreciation of the late Catherine Halkes, a great influence in my life and a European foremother for Feminist Theology. The emergence of Feminist Theology globally was based on the contextual struggle for justice in society and religion. This evoked new awareness, academic disciplines, culture and spirituality, and in an eccesial dimension inspired the Woman Church movement. Bruce Mitchell has observed that “It is not always possible to say with certainty whether clauses introduced by words such as þœr, þa, and þonne are principal or subordinate. The problem arises more often in the poetry, where the element order is a less certain guide than it is in the prose.” In prose the feature of the element order that usually sorts out clause-initial adverbs from conjunctions is the position of the finite verb. When the finite verb immediately follows (...) a clause-initial þœr, þa, or þonne, the initial word usually makes better sense as an adverb than as a conjunction. When one or more words intervene between the clause-initial word and the finite verb, the þœr, þa, or þonne often makes better sense as a conjunction, and S. O. Andrew therefore termed this “the conjunctive word order.” Elisabeth Traugott concurs with Mitchell's reservations about element order, writing that while differences in word order after these initial words “can often be used to distinguish a subordinate clause introduced by a conjunction from a main clause introduced by an adverb, … the distinction was never rigid, and can be regarded only as a tendency. … It certainly cannot be used as a sure test of main vs. subordinate clause status.”.
