The article discusses the priority of belonging to a particular community and identification with it. The authors believe that among the entire set of communities, membership in political groups should be a priority, and their membership in state political communities should be higher than territorial, ethnic, religious, linguistic and other differences. However, the devotion of religious believers to an international religious community that does not know official state borders can exceed their devotion to the state as the main political institution. A Critical Reflection on the Systematics of Traditional Chinese Learning.Zhao-hui Fang & ed Schiller, David R. - 2002 - Philosophy East and West 52 (1):36-49.
Since the beginning of the twentieth century, Chinese scholars have tended to traditional Chinese learning split apart and rearrange it according to the systematics of modern Western academic disciplines. By examining the meaning of Western "philosophy" and "ethics," it is demonstrated that Western and Chinese learning should not be lumped together according to the same systematics. Moreover, classical Chinese learning has always had its own complex systematics and its own long tradition, and it has undergone constant development over time. Thus, (...)

Is the societal-level of analysis sufficient today to understand the values of those in the global workforce? Or are individual-level analyses more appropriate for assessing the influence of values on ethical behaviors across country workforces? Using multi-level analyses for a 48-society sample, we test the utility of both the societal-level and individual-level dimensions of collectivism and individualism values for predicting ethical behaviors of business professionals. Our values-based behavioral analysis indicates that values at the individual-level make a more significant contribution to (...)

The marine shale in South China has great gas exploration potential, and exploration in the Sichuan Basin has been successful, but the degree of exploration remains low in the Guizhou Province. We used organic geochemical analyses, scanning electron microscopy, field emission SEM, nuclear magnetic resonance, X-ray diffraction analysis, and low-temperature [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] adsorption experimental methods to study the micropore types and pore structures and their effects on the methane adsorption capacity of organic-rich shales found in (...)

Impact of Cell Size Effect on Nutrient-Phytoplankton Dynamics.Tiancai Liao, Hengguo Yu, Chuanjun Dai & Min Zhao - 2019 - Complexity 2019:1-23.
In this paper, a nutrient-phytoplankton model, which is described by a system of ordinary differential equations incorporating the effect of cell size, and its corresponding stochastic differential equation version are studied analytically and numerically. A key advantage of considering cell size effect is that it can more accurately reveal the intrinsic law of interaction between nutrient and phytoplankton. The main purpose of this paper is to research how cell size affects the nutrient-phytoplankton dynamics within the deterministic and stochastic environments. Mathematically, (...)

    National Survey of Client's Perceptions of Chinese Psychotherapist Practices.Jing-Bo Zhao, Jian-Lin Ji, Fang Tang, Qing-Yun Du, Xue-Ling Yang, Zhen-Zhi Yang, Yan-Fei Hou & Xiao-Yuan Zhang - 2012 - Ethics and Behavior 22 (5):362 - 377.
The present study is a cross-sectional survey that investigates ethical practices among Chinese psychotherapists from the perspective of a large representative sample of Chinese clients (N?=?1,100). In reports from clients, we found that psychotherapists did poorly in providing informed consent and had other ethical difficulties in the therapeutic setting and with dual relationships. We conclude that Chinese culture, especially Confucianism, had significant impact on the attitudes toward the psychotherapists' ethical practices, which complicated ethical dilemmas. It is important for cross-cultural psychotherapists (...)

Comprehensive and authoritative, this _Handbook_ provides a nuanced description and analysis of educational systems, practices, and policies in Asian countries and explains and interprets these practices from cultural, social, historical, and economic perspectives. Using a culture-based framework, the volume is organized in five sections, each devoted to educational practices in one civilization in Asia: Sinic, Japanese, Islamic, Buddhist, and Hindu. Culture and culture identities essentially are civilization identities; the major differences among civilizations are rooted in their different cultures. This framework (...)

Integrated Machine Learning and Enhanced Statistical Approach-Based Wind Power Forecasting in Australian Tasmania Wind Farm.Fang Yao, Wei Liu, Xingyong Zhao & Li Song - 2020 - Complexity 2020:1-12.
This paper develops an integrated machine learning and enhanced statistical approach for wind power interval forecasting. A time-series wind power forecasting model is formulated as the theoretical basis of our method. The proposed model takes into account two important characteristics of wind speed: the nonlinearity and the time-changing distribution. Based on the proposed model, six machine learning regression algorithms are employed to forecast the prediction interval of the wind power output. The six methods are tested using real wind speed data (...)

The changing milieu of research—increasingly global, interdisciplinary and collaborative—prompts greater emphasis on cultural context and upon partnership with international scholars and diverse community groups. Ethics training, however, tends to ignore the cross-cultural challenges of making ethical choices. This paper confronts those challenges by presenting a new curricular model developed by an international team. It examines ethics across a very broad range of situations, using case studies and employing the perspectives of social science, humanities and the sciences. The course has been (...)

Dynamic Analysis of a Heterogeneous Diffusive Prey-Predator System in Time-Periodic Environment.Chuanjun Dai, He Liu, Zhan Jin, Qing Guo, Yi Wang, Hengguo Yu, Qi Wang, Zengling Ma & Min Zhao - 2020 - Complexity 2020:1-13.
In this paper, a heterogeneous diffusive prey-predator system is first proposed and then studied analytically and numerically. Some sufficient conditions are derived, including permanence and extinction of system and the boundedness of the solution. The existence of periodic solution and its stability are discussed as well. Furthermore, numerical results indicate that both the spatial heterogeneity and the time-periodic environment can influence the permanence and extinction of the system directly. Our numerical results are consistent with the analytical analysis.

    A Multiscale and High-Precision LSTM-GASVR Short-Term Traffic Flow Prediction Model.Jingmei Zhou, Hui Chang, Xin Cheng & Xiangmo Zhao - 2020 - Complexity 2020:1-17.
Short-term traffic flow has the characteristics of complex, changeable, strong timeliness, and so on. So the traditional prediction algorithm is difficult to meet its high real-time and accuracy requirements. In this paper, a multiscale and high-precision LSTM-GASVR short-term traffic flow prediction algorithm is proposed. This method uses 15 min traffic flow data of the first 16 sections as input and completes the data preprocessing operation through reconstruction, normalization, and rising dimension by working day factor; establishing the prediction model based on (...)

  47. Art as Alterity in Education.Guoping Zhao - 2014 - Educational Theory 64 (3):245-259.
In education, art has often been perceived as entertainment and decoration and is the first subject to go when there are budget cuts or test-score pressures. Drawing on Emmanuel Lévinas's idea of the primacy of radical alterity that breaks the totality of our being, enables self-transformation and ethics, and ensures community as a totality of singularities, and on Maurice Blanchot's expansion of radical alterity to art, Guoping Zhao argues that the role of art in education must be reconsidered and (...)

The postmodern critique of modernity has focused on the construction of the modern subject and the self‐disciplining and self‐cancellation tendencies within it. This critique, however, fails to consider what happens during the early years of children’s development — the period during which the modern subject is made, and the one in which the paradoxes and ambiguities inherent in modern subjectivity are established. In this essay Guoping Zhao analyzes how children’s developmental process affects the definition and formation of the self (...)
