In adaptive development, mental well-being has a role to play in adolescents’ search in adolescents’ niche in life and the formation of a separate identity. Although this has been an area of interest in a number of disciplines, there remains ambiguity over our understanding of terms such as quality of life, life satisfaction, and mental well-being. Our aim was to employ an interpretative phenomenological analysis to find out how adolescent boys perceive the concept of mental well-being and ascertain what helps (...) them and stops them from “feeling chilled”. The data was obtained from a sample of 26 secondary school students who attended one of four focus groups. We found that they achieved a kind of escape from the world of social roles through performing activities like physical exercise or driving a vehicle, while searching for a sense of latitude and potency and attempting to reduce tension. Thus there is a clear distinction between what they desire and what is expected of them. Hanging out and “chilling” with their peer group seemed to be an important part of relationship formation, while close dyadic relationships were less significant. To a certain degree, the results of this study contradict conventional notions of happiness and mental well-being found in mainstream psychology. (shrink)

Short overview of the From Small Beginnings Project and its relevance for resisting eugenics in contemporary society.

Filozofi se nisu mnogo bavili vezom između filozofsko-psiholoških stanovišta Franca Brentana i Vilijama Džejmsa. Ona je svakako istorijski interesantna pre svega zbog uticaja koji su njihova stanovišta imala na Edmunda Huserla, ali je i filozofski značajna jer se preko nje može pokazati zašto u Džejmsovoj filozofiji duha nema korelata Brentanovom pojmu intencionalnosti koji označava relaciju mentalnih fenomena prema fizičkim. S obzirom na ovo određenje, relacija intencionalnosti, ukoliko za nju ima mesta u Džejmsovoj psihologiji, bila bi relacija u kojoj stoje korelati (...) ovih fenomena u Džejmsovoj analizi svesti. Pokazujem da postoji korelacija između Brentanovog određenja mentalnih fenomena i Džejmsovog određenja prelaznih segmenata svesti, s jedne strane, kao i između Brentanovog pojma fizičkih fenomena i Džejmsovog pojma supstantivnih segmenata svesti, s druge strane. Ispitujem da li odnos između prelaznih i supstantivnih delova ima osobine koje karakterišu intencionalni odnos. Pokazujem da to nije slučaj. In the period after the First World War when the various national-ideological “truths” that led to it were not well resolved which resulted in the Second World War, one of the greatest world crises occurs. In those turbulent times, one philosopher renounces his national identity (changes his religion and name), wanting not to save himself from an evil world that is emerging but to join the creation of a completely new world – the world of modern logic. This man is (...) Alfred Tarski, whom many recognize as “the man who defined truth”, linking him to the formulation of the distinction between object and metalanguage. In the paper, I argue with historians of philosophy who claim that this distinction was first set by the logician and philosopher of the Lvov-Warsaw school Stanislaw Leśniewski (whose Tarski was the only doctoral student) accusing Tarski of violating professional laws without attributing the authorship of this distinction to Leśniewski. I show that this is not true and I cite the places where Tarski clearly emphasizes Leśniewski ‘s contribution. (shrink)

El objetivo de este trabajo es discutir la urgencia de evaluar el modelo bilingüe, Lengua de Señas Mexicana y español, implementado para la comunidad sorda. Y conocer los resultados de las escuelas que adoptaron este modelo en: la adquisición de la LSM; la enseñanza del español como segunda lengua en su forma escrita; y en favorecer la identidad sorda. The aim of this article is to problematize the concept of school culture both as a concept and as a subject of investigation. It deals with the historical roots of this concept and the fact that it is shrinking—a consequence of the managerial imperatives of effectiveness and accountability in education. School culture, in relation to the quality of schools and the quality of education, has become the subject of audits, arrived at through a developed network of standardisation in education, testing (...) and evaluation. The methodology of evaluation currently lending particular substance to school culture, however, generates different methodological perspectives on investigating school culture and thus research is becoming an instrument of political power. In the research it is then necessary to either abandon the concept of school culture or to free it from spinning round the cycle of evaluation/self-evaluation—a change in school culture—improving the “quality of the school”—a new evaluation/self-evaluation. One way to do this is to employ ethnographic approaches in research into schools and to understand school culture as a system of texts. (shrink)
