In the modern culture, the phenomenon of the 'disabled' body is a intersection place of its ableist ideology, power relations and pseudoscientific explanations, and they are urged by the neo-eugenic project of the perfect world creating. As the prisoner of the biomedical discourse, such a body, deprived of any agensy, loaded with the culture-historicaly constituated non-power, is a particularly suitable field of the mainstream culture for spreading almost archetypically powerful apocaliptic visions of confronting with the enemy's otherness. For that reason, (...) the underlying supposition of the article is that the 'disabled' body, by means of the uniqueness of its morphology and anatomical-physiological structure, says nothing about itself, the basis of that it which would qualify to be a cult victim of the discriminatory gaze, but it is a reflection the culture frustrated by its own failure to produce an apsolutelly controlable order of things. Our ideas of demonic figure of the 'disabled' body conceal the century-old negentropic struggle of the Western civilization, conceptualy supplied with the criteria, norms and standards of health, normalcy, beauty and the truth, instrumentally supplied with the preventive and rehabilitative provisions of medicine, cosmetology and fashion and institutionally supplied with asylums, to provide itself with kingdom of peace and serenity through pouring out any otherness, first of all the cultural one, intentionally reduced to the pure biological. Fenomen 'ometenog' tela predstavlja u savremenoj kulturi tacku ukrstanja njene 'neometenisticke' ideologije, odnosa moci i pseudonaucnih objasnjenja motivisanih skrivenim neoeugenickim projektom stvaranja savrsenog sveta. Kao zarobljenik biomedicinskog diskursa, takvo telo, liseno ma kakve agensnosti, obremenjeno kulturno-istorijski konstruisanom ne-moci, jeste narocito podesan poligon mejnstrim kulture za sirenje skoro arhetipski snaznih apokaliptickih vizija suocavanja sa neprijateljskom drugoscu. Zato je osnovna teza koju clanak nastoji da dokaze, da 'ometeno' telo specificnoscu svoje morfologije i anatomsko-fizioloske strukture ne govori nista o sebi sto bi ga kvalifikovalo da bude kultna zrtva diskriminisuceg pogleda, vec da je refleksija kulture frustrirane vlastitim neuspehom u proizvodnji apsolutno kontrolabilnog poretka stvari. Iza nase predstave demonskog lika 'ometenog' tela skriva se vekovna negentropijska borba zapadne civilizacije, konceptualno opremljene kriterijumima, normama i standardima zdravlja, normalnosti, lepote i istine, instrumentalno prevencijskim i rehabilitacijskim merama medicine, kozmetike i mode a institucionalno azilima, da obezbedi sebi vecno carstvo mira i spokoja u rastakanju svake drugosti, a ponajpre one kulturne koju namerno redukuje na cisto biolosko. In this article the author examines the first domestic philosophical debate between the two authors who perform within liberal positions. It is a debate between Leon Kojen and Aleksandar Pavkovic, conducted during 1985 in the pages of several national magazines. The main subject of controversy is the question of establishment of liberalism. Kojen is committed to seeing that liberalism is based on the equal rights, equal rights to freedom. Pavkovic criticizes this view and suggests different approach which establishes liberalism starting (...) from interests. The author is analyzing their articles and arguments, but also attempts to shed light on the overall political and intellectual context of the liberalization of society in which the debate takes place. Face recognition is impaired in patients with prosopagnosia, which may occur as a side effect of neurosurgical procedures. Face selective regions on the ventral temporal cortex have been localized with electrical cortical stimulation, electrocorticography, and functional magnetic resonance imagining. This is the first group study using within-patient comparisons to validate face selective regions mapping, utilizing the aforementioned modalities. Five patients underwent surgical treatment of intractable epilepsy and joined the study. Subdural grid electrodes were implanted on their ventral temporal cortices to (...) localize seizure foci and face selective regions as part of the functional mapping protocol. Face selective regions were identified in all patients with fMRI, four patients with ECoG, and two patients with ECS. From 177 tested electrode locations in the region of interest, which is defined by the fusiform gyrus and the inferior temporal gyrus, 54 face locations were identified by at least one modality in all patients. fMRI mapping showed the highest detection rate, revealing 70.4% for face selective locations, whereas ECoG and ECS identified 64.8 and 31.5%, respectively. Thus, 28 face locations were co-localized by at least two modalities, with detection rates of 89.3% for fMRI, 85.7% for ECoG and 53.6 % for ECS. All five patients had no face recognition deficits after surgery, even though five of the face selective locations, one obtained by ECoG and the other four by fMRI, were within 10 mm to the resected volumes. Moreover, fMRI included a quite large volume artifact on the ventral temporal cortex in the ROI from the anatomical structures of the temporal base. In conclusion, ECS was not sensitive in several patients, whereas ECoG and fMRI even showed activation within 10 mm to the resected volumes. Considering the potential signal drop-out in fMRI makes ECoG the most reliable tool to identify face selective locations in this study. A multimodal approach can improve the specificity of ECoG and fMRI, while simultaneously minimizing the number of required ECS sessions. Hence, all modalities should be considered in a clinical mapping protocol entailing combined results of co-localized face selective locations. (shrink)

Amino-terminal heteroacylation has been identified in retinal proteins including recoverin and α subunit of G-protein, transducin. The tissue-specific modification seems to mediate not only a proteinmembrane interaction but also a specific protein-protein interaction. The mechanism generating the heterogeneity and its physiological role are still unclear, but an interesting idea for the latter postulates a fine regulation of the signal transduction pathway by distinct N-acyl groups.

Modern cognitive and experimental science is increasingly working to explore the meaning and importance of forgetting. Forgetting is one of the most important mental functions on an individual level, but also on a social and national level, since it enables healing, purifies the mind of difficult memories, prevents obsession with problems, and eliminates the possibility of psychosomatic illnesses. The famous British TV series Black Mirror, which has become a symbol of the challenges that modern and futuristic technology brings to man, (...) deals with the problems that arise due to the obsession of the gadget culture with abolishing forgetting through technological enhancement. Several episodes are based on gadgets that expand the potential of memory and make it constantly available to other subjects, in the way that data from a person’s entire history become available. In a dialogue with Brooker’s ideas, the author re–examines the problems spawned by this future society without forgetting, and searches for possible solutions. Moderna kognitivna i eksperimentalna znanost sve više se bavi istraživanjem značenja i važnosti zaboravljanja. Zaboravljanje je jedna od najvažnijih mentalnih funkcija na individualnoj, ali i na društvenoj i nacionalnoj razini, budući da omogućuje iscjeljivanje uma i brisanje neugodnih sjećanja, sprječava opsesivno razmišljanje o problemima i otklanja mogućnost pojave psihosomatskih bolesti. Poznata britanska serija Crno zrcalo, koja je postala simbol za izazove koje moderna i futuristička tehnologija donosi čovjeku, bavi se problemima koji nastaju zbog opsjednutosti kulture gadgeta da se tehnološkim napretkom potpuno onemogući zaboravljanje. Nekoliko epizoda serije temelji se na gadgetima koji proširuju potencijal ljudskog pamćenja te ga čine dostupnim drugima, a time podatci o čitavoj nečijoj prošlosti postaju dostupni. Razmišljajući o Brookerovim idejama, autor razmatra probleme koje bi iznjedrilo takvo buduće društvo lišeno zaborava i traži moguća rješenja. (shrink)

To mark the 70th anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the author embarked on an attempt to analyze the theoretical and historical framework that contributed to the adoption of the document. The first part of the article discusses the development of the philosophy of personalism from Mounier to Maritain and analyzes Maritain’s views on human rights. In the second part of the article, the author shows the decisive influence of the personalists Charles Malik and Rene (...) Cassin on the adoption of the document, which clearly bears the mark of the Christian personalistic discourse and notions. (shrink)

The paper is focused on ideological and political conflicts about popular music in Serbia, as a good example of wrong and confused searching for identity. Basic conflict that author is analyzing is about oriental elements and the question if they are legitimate parts of Serbian musical heritage or not. Author is making an analysis of three periods in twentieth century, in which absolutely the same arguments were used, and he's paying special attention to contemporary conflicts, trying to explain why all (...) of the theories are ideologically based. Author is insisting on role market played in development and modernization of popular music in Serbia. The article is ending with some recommendations for better understanding of cultural identity in Serbia, and for recognizing popular music as specific field of interest and research. Rad se bavi ideoloskim i politickim sukobima oko popularne muzike u Srbiji kao odlicnom primeru jednog konfuznog i lose postavljenog traganja za identitetom. Zapravo, sukob o kome je rec, sve vreme se vodi oko toga da li su takozvani orijentalni elementi legitiman deo srpske muzike ili ne. Autor se fokusira na tri perioda dvadesetog veka kada su se potezali potpuno isti argumenti, a narocitu paznju posvecuje aktuelnim sukobima i izlaze zasto su sve tri prisutne pozicije na sceni ideoloski zasnovane. Posebna paznja posvecena je uticaju trzista na razvoj i modernizaciju popularne muzike. Clanak se zavrsava preporukama za jedno bolje postavljeno razumevanje sopstvenog kulturnog identiteta. In this paper, I outline several methodological questions that we need to confront. The chief question is how can we identify the nature of technological change and its varied cultural consequences—including social, political, institutional, and economic dimensions—when our different research methods, using distinct ‘levels’ or ‘scales’ of analysis, yield contradictory results. What can we say, in other words, when our findings about technology follow from the framings of our inquiries? In slightly different terms, can we combine insights from the fine-grained (...) “social shaping of technology” as well as from complementary approaches accenting the “technological shaping of society?” As a way forward, I will suggest conducting multi-scale inquiries into the processes of technological and cultural change. This will involve recognizing and conceptualizing the analytical scales or levels on which we conduct inquiry (very roughly, micro, meso, macro) as well as outlining strategies for moving within and between these scales or levels. Of course we want and need diverse methodologies for analyzing technology and culture. I find myself in sympathy with geographer Brenner (New state spaces: urban governance and the rescaling of statehood, 2004, p. 7), who aspires to a “theoretically precise yet also historically specific conceptualization of [technological change] as a key dimension of social, political and economic life.”. Humanitarian aid professionals frequently encounter situations in which one is conscious of the morally appropriate action but cannot take it because of institutional obstacles. Dilemmas like this are likely to result in a specific kind of stress reaction at the individual level, labeled as moral stress. In our study, 16 individuals working with international humanitarian aid and rescue operations participated in semistructured interviews, analyzed in accordance with a grounded theory approach. A theoretical model of ethical decision making from a moral (...) stress perspective was developed. The practical implications of the study are discussed. (shrink)
