  1. Children and the Changing World of Advertising.Elizabeth S. Moore - 2004 - Journal of Business Ethics 52 (2):161-167.
Concerns about children's ability to fully comprehend and evaluate advertising messages has stimulated substantial research and heated debate among scholars, business leaders, consumer advocates, and public policy makers for more than three decades. During that time, some very fundamental questions about the fairness of marketing to children have been raised, yet many remain unresolved today. With the emergence of increasingly sophisticated advertising media, promotional offers and creative appeals in recent years, new issues have also developed. This paper provides a basis (...)

A Phenomenology Without Reserve.Edward Moore - 2001 - Symposium: Canadian Journal of Continental Philosophy/Revue canadienne de philosophie continentale 5 (1):95-101.
This article is the product of a critical engagement that I have orchestrated between Husserl’s phenomenology and Stoic epistemology. I argue that the Stoic theory of knowledge, which is based upon the idea that the individual human being is a logos spermatikos, or “rational seed” of God, precludes any authentic doctrine of freedom, insofar as it enslaves the individual to a constant reference back toward God, as the source of “fundanlent” of all knowledge. However, the similarities between the Stoic theory (...)

    The Unequal Case for Animal Rights.Eric Moore - 2002 - Environmental Ethics 24 (3):295-312.
I argue that the equal rights views of Tom Regan and Evelyn B. Pluhar must be rejected because they have unacceptable consequences. My objection is similar to one made in the literature by Mary Anne Warren, but I develop it in more detail and defend it from several plausible responses that an equal rights theorist might make. I formulate a theory, a moderate form of perfectionism, that makes a valuedistinction between moral agents and moral patients according to which although both (...)

    Desert, Virtue, and Justice.Eric Moore - 2000 - Social Theory and Practice 26 (3):417-442.
I endorse an old view that distributive justice can best be understood as people getting what they deserve. John Rawls has several famous arguments to show that such a view is false. I criticize those arguments, but agree that more work needs to be done on the clarification and explanation of the concept of desert in order for the old view to be more than a platitude. I then criticize attempted analyses of the concept of desert by Feinberg, Kleinig, and (...)

Formalism and Strategic Fouls.Eric Moore - 2016 - Journal of the Philosophy of Sport 44 (1):95-107.
It is sometimes claimed that formalism and the logical incompatibility thesis together imply that fouls cannot be part of the game. Some philosophers think this proves that therefore strategic fouls are always morally wrong, but other philosophers think this result undermines formalism itself, since strategic fouls clearly are part of the game and are at least sometimes morally permissible. I show that formalism in fact does accommodate strategic fouls and that it is neutral about whether strategic fouls are morally permissible (...)

“Children Are All Looking at You”: Child Socialization, Directive Trajectories and Affective Stances in a Russian Preschool. [REVIEW]Ekaterina Moore - 2013 - Pragmatics and Society 4 (3):317-344.
This discourse analysis of video-recorded data examines how through the use of directives Russian preschool teachers socialize three-year-old preschool newcomers into becoming competent members of their social setting. I demonstrate that this process involves manipulation of multiple semiotic resources, including language, body, physical objects, and orientation in physical space. Previous research has shown that children “actively develop and use communicative skills to produce socially-ordered events in everyday interaction with adults and peers” (Corsaro 1979: 335). The present study demonstrates that adult (...)
