Ethics, Risk and Benefits Associated with Different Applications of Nanotechnology: A Comparison of Expert and Consumer Perceptions of Drivers of Societal Acceptance.L. J. Frewer, A. R. H. Fischer & N. Gupta - 2015 - NanoEthics 9 (2):93-108.
Examining those risk and benefit perceptions utilised in the formation of attitudes and opinions about emerging technologies such as nanotechnology can be useful for both industry and policy makers involved in their development, implementation and regulation. A broad range of different socio-psychological and affective factors may influence consumer responses to different applications of nanotechnology, including ethical concerns. A useful approach to identifying relevant consumer concerns and innovation priorities is to develop predictive constructs which can be used to differentiate applications of (...)

Seismic Attribute Driven Integrated Characterization of the Woodford Shale in West-Central Oklahoma.Nabanita Gupta, Supratik Sarkar & Kurt J. Marfurt - 2013 - Interpretation: SEG 1 (2):SB85-SB96.
The organic-rich, silty Woodford Shale in west-central Oklahoma is a prolific resource play producing gas and liquid hydrocarbons. We calibrated seismic attributes and prestack inversion using well logs and core information within a seismic geomorphologic framework to define the overall basin architecture, major stratigraphic changes, and related variations in lithologies. Core measurements of elastic moduli and total organic content indicated that the Woodford Shale can be broken into three elastic petrotypes important to well completion and hydrocarbon enrichment. Upscaling these measurements (...)

    Consumer Attitudes Towards Nanotechnologies Applied to Food Production.L. J. Frewer, N. Gupta, S. George, A. R. H. Fischer, E. L. Giles & David Coles - unknown
The literature on public perceptions of, and attitudes towards, nanotechnology used in the agrifood sector is reviewed. Research into consumer perceptions and attitudes has focused on general applications of nanotechnology, rather than within the agrifood sector. Perceptions of risk and benefit associated with different applications of nanotechnology, including agrifood applications, shape consumer attitudes, and acceptance, together with ethical concerns related to environmental impact or animal welfare. Attitudes are currently moderately positive across all areas of application. The occurrence of a negative (...)

Female Sterilization in Latin America: Cross-National Perspectives.Iúri da Costa Leite, Neeru Gupta & Roberto Do Nascimento Rodrigues - 2004 - Journal of Biosocial Science 36 (6):683-698.
Fertility levels have dropped substantially in Latin America in recent decades, fuelled by increased contraceptive use and notably a method mix skewed towards female sterilization. This study examined choice of female sterilization in four Latin American countries: Brazil, Colombia, the Dominican Republic and Peru. Data were drawn from national Demographic and Health Surveys conducted in 1995s reproductive histories to consider the effects of a number of sociodemographic and contextual determinants as they pertained to status at the moment of the event. (...)

Indian Women in Doctoral Education in Science and Engineering: A Study of Informal Milieu at the Reputed Indian Institutes of Technology.Namrata Gupta - 2007 - Science, Technology, and Human Values 32 (5):507-533.
Informal communication and interaction are integral components of the practice of science, including the doctoral process. This article argues that women are disadvantaged in the informal milieu of the higher education in science, and that this milieu is not uniform everywhere. It posits that to understand the position of women in science in South Asian countries like India, the inquiry has to be conceptualized in the specific social, historical, and institutional context. Through a questionnaire survey comparing male and female perceptions, (...)

Machine Vision Approach for Automating Vegetation Detection on Railway Tracks.Narendra K. Gupta, Mark Dougherty, Barsam Payvar, Roger G. Nyberg & Siril Yella - 2013 - Journal of Intelligent Systems 22 (2):179-196.
The presence of vegetation on railway tracks threatens track safety and longevity. However, vegetation inspections in Sweden are currently being carried out manually. Manually inspecting vegetation is very slow and time consuming. Maintaining an even quality standard is also very difficult. A machine vision-based approach is therefore proposed to emulate the visual abilities of the human inspector. Work aimed at detecting vegetation on railway tracks has been split into two main phases. The first phase is aimed at detecting vegetation on (...)

The major part of India’s architectural heritage is to be found in its towns. This paper will, after an historical survey, look at the various agencies that over the last two decades have been concerned with urban heritage, to examine their agenda, and the pressures they face. ‘Heritage cities’ is a term which appears not only in documents of the Archaeological Survey of India and of the Indian National Trust but also, more recently, in statements made by the Ministry of (...)

This book explores the apostle Paul’s temple, priesthood, sacrificial, and worship language with a special interest in how metaphors are powerful vehicles for theological transformation. The methodology of this study combines perspectives from cognitive linguistics, the social-sciences, and rhetorical criticism. In the final synthesis, it is discovered that common factors among Paul ’s cultic metaphors include an interest in devotion to God, the significance of the body, and the potential for the reshaping of the mind and perception.

Schooling for All in India: Can We Neglect the Demand?Santhakumar Velappan Nair, Namita Gupta & Rama Murthy Sripada - 2016 - Oxford University Press India.
The volume critically analyses the primary drawbacks of the Indian education system-non-enrolment, dropouts, irregular attendance, and inadequate learning. It establishes the need to strongly encourage parents to recognize the importance of education for their children's future. Arguing that supply-side strategies-free education, midday meals, opening more schools-have not proved effective since the problem of inadequate demand is much larger, the authors delineate the measures that are required to boost the demand for education in India.

Assessing the mechanical integrity of the caprock-reservoir system is necessary to evaluate the practical storage capacity for geologic [Formula: see text] storage. We used a combination of well-log and experimental data to estimate the statistical distribution of rock mechanical properties of Cambrian-Ordovician strata within the Northern Appalachian region of Ohio and studied their heterogeneity throughout the study area. Empirical correlations between static-dynamic moduli of carbonate and sandstone formations of the Northern Appalachian Basin were developed. The state of stress for caprock (...)
