In chapter IX of the Principles, Anne Conway claims that her metaphysics is diametrically opposed to those of Descartes and Spinoza. Scholars have analyzed her rejection of Cartesianism, but not her critique of Spinoza. This paper proposes that two central points of Conway’s metaphysics can be understood as direct responses to Spinoza: (1) the relation between God, Christ, and the creatures in the tripartite division of being, and (2) the individuation of beings in the lowest species. Conway, in criticizing Spinoza’s identification between God and nature, defends a paradoxical monism, and that her concept of individuation is a reductio ad absurdum of Spinoza’s criterion of identity in the individuation of finite modes. Although the works of the authors of the Golden Age of Latin Literature play an important formative role for Early Modern philosophers, their influence in Early Modern thought is, nowadays, rarely studied. Trying to bring this topic to light once again and following the seminal works of Kajanto (1979), Proietti (1985) and Akkerman (1985), I will target Spinoza’s Latin sources in order to analyze their place in his philosophy. On those grounds, I will offer an overview of the problems of (...) the reception of classical literature in Early Modernity and then dwell on the particular case of Ovid and Spinoza. The present paper will argue that although Spinoza’s references to Ovid fill a rhetorical purpose as suggested by the existing literature, these mentions have a prior philosophical motivation. That is, the references in the Ethics are not merely illustrative; instead, they indicate that Spinoza acknowledges Ovid’s beliefs about human experiences and deliberately elaborates on Ovid’s view to construct and defend his own theses. To this end, the paper will analyze some citations mapped by Proietti (1985) and add a new one in an attempt to enlarge the list of places and topics that merit further investigation. To conclude, I will point out how the references to Ovid are part of Spinoza’s own defense of the powers of imagination. (shrink)

Imagination is characterized by Spinoza as the first kind of knowledge, and, as such, imagination is a mode of thought. However, in a further mapping of the concept in the Ethics, we see that it is an activity that involves both the mind and the extended body. The standard and idealist interpretation of imagination does not account for its corporeal or extended dimension, leaving aside an important aspect of the activity. Neste artigo-ensaio, aponto que a pesquisa sobre as obras escritas por mulheres na filosofia tem implicações práticas que interferem no nosso modo de ensinar filosofia e de vivenciar a prática filosófica acadêmica. Elaborando sobre experiências de aula recentes, pretendo mostrar que o projeto de resgate tem um cunho pedagógico na medida em que deixa explícitos vieses de interpretação histórica e fenômenos sexistas da cultura acadêmica. Building from recent classroom experiences, I try to show that the retrieval project has a pedagogical aspect as it makes explicit historical interpretation biases and sexist phenomena of the academic culture. Finally, I show that the retrieval project also shows that History has deep connections with the present and, for this reason, the space for content creation in philosophy classrooms and topics in philosophy of education become key for the project of expansion of the philosophical canon.Keywords: Women. "The aim of this paper is to inscribe the argument on the Practical Syllogism of De motu animalium, chapter 7, in its immediate context. Now this framework is by no means a logical one. The De motu is a psychological or zoological treatise, whose scope belongs to natural philosophy. Moreover De motu's Practical Syllogism cannot be restricted to practical, i.e. anthropological, cases, like akrasia. It is inserted in a physiological development regarding the biological explanation of animal emotions, reactions and actions. (...) Georg Agricola’s De Re Metallica (1556) is an impressive work about mining arts and sciences, still used as a reference work to understand the mining world of his time and to analyze the relationships between scholars and practitioners. This essay begins by studying how Agricola presents the underground surveying, also known as geometria subterranea. How does the author’s mathematics relate to contemporary geometry or to actual surveying practices? Second, the essay contrasts his scholarly approach with sixteenth-century administrative and technical documents, (...) as well as mining sermons. Comparing the practical geometry contained in the De Re Metallica with different kinds of sources helps to question the relationships between the arts and natural and exact sciences in the practical settings of early modern Europe. Finally, it argues for a distinction between the inquiry on the historical progress of mathematics in civil life and philosophical questions about the rise of new sciences. (shrink)

Dans (...) le présent texte, nous tenterons de dénouer ce paradoxe par le biais des Deux leçons sur l’animal et l’homme de Gilbert Simondon, en revenant sur deux motifs qui s’opposent seulement en apparence : d’un côté, la vision démiurgique de l’homme comme grand artisan, ancrée dans le mythe platonicien du Timée, et de l’autre, la vision axiologique et éthique de l’homme, rendue emblématique par le sermon aux oiseaux de Saint François d’Assise. L’importance de la légende de Saint François d’Assise pour le canon apocalyptique du xiii ème siècle nous permettra de relier cette vision éthique au mythe platonicien, nous amenant, au final, à suggérer une alternative aux visions apocalyptiques de l’Anthropocène, appuyée sur l’originalité de la conception de la nature dans la pensée simondonienne. ». Long undervalued in France, philosophical anthropology has played an essential role in Germany, helping to address some of the most important issues straddling philosophy and the social sciences: humanity's place in nature and in history; the individual and others; and relations between human groups.

In the last lines of Politics VII, 3, Aristotle states that the happy city acts nobly. This implies that the city has a practical life, and that this life has its end in itself. This claim seems to contradict the famous distinction, which has been made elsewhere by Aristotle, between the practical and theoretical lives. It is argued in this paper that there is, here, neither contradiction nor inconsistency in Aristotle’s conception of human action. Some readings, according to which this (...) passage deals with the role of the philosophers in the happy city, are also ruled out. The proposed solution consists in showing that this text refers to a broader conception of action, one that is beyond the sphere of human practical activities: any genuine praxis has its goal in itself, even when it produces external effects. First collection of essays entirely devoted to the inscription of Diogenes of Oinoanda. The texts of Diogenes of Oinoanda (2nd century AD) who invited his readers to an Epicurean life is the largest ancient inscription ever discovered. Over 70 new finds have increased the number of known wall blocks and fragments to nearly 300, offering new insights into Diogenes' distinctive presentation of philosophy. This collection of essays discusses the philosophical significance of these discoveries and is the first of this kind (...) entirely devoted to Diogenes of Oinoanda. Particular attention is paid to his philosophical aims and polemical strategies. Diogenes was apparently well aware of still ongoing philosophical debates, engaging in polemics against Presocratic philosophers, Platonics, and especially Stoics. His views about important issues like happiness, fear, old age, and the afterlife are explained on the bases of Epicurean physics and theology, ethics, politics, theory of knowledge, and psychology. Bien que cette formule, en première approche, semble aller dans le sens d’une téléologie cosmique ou globale, elle conduit en fait à privilégier une téléologie relative, c’est-à-dire locale, qui opère à l’échelle des êtres vivants. Elle s’applique en effet, (...) non pas de manière absolue, mais relativement aux possibilités définies par la nature de l’espèce (propriétés spécifiques et génériques). La géométrie souterraine est une science mathématique pratique, qui se développe dans les exploitations minières et dont la diffusion est considérablement modifiée au cours du xviiie siècle. Ce phénomène est lié à l’institutionnalisation graduelle de la discipline, de l’établissement d’un système de compagnonnage à la création d’académies des mines. Progressivement, les pratiques vont faire appel à de nouvelles méthodes et intégrer une solide formation en mathématiques théoriques. La circulation et l’enseignement des connaissances sont dans un premier temps basés sur un (...) système de manuscrits qui sera étudié en détail. L’exemple du Markscheider August Beyer (1677-1753) illustre ce processus collectif de constitution et de transmission de connaissances, dont la diffusion est cependant contrôlée. Nous analysons dans un second temps l’évolution des vecteurs de circulation et son influence sur la discipline, en nous appuyant sur la biographie de deux mathématiciens saxons, J.A. Scheidhauer (1718-1784) et son discipline J.F. Lempe (1757-1801). Leurs parcours croisés symbolisent la transformation de la discipline. Le passage à l’imprimé, la publication d’articles dans des revues spécialisées et la création de chaires académiques font de la géométrie souterraine une science reconnue qui reste cependant en dehors du corpus de connaissances et des débats universitaires. L'examen de la céramique à vernis noir d'époque hellénistique trouvée à Délos fait apparaître la présence de productions importées d'Italie. Il s'agit de campaniennes A, Β et C du IIe et du Ier s. av. J.-C, au nombre de quelque 150 fragments qui se répartissent pour l'essentiel entre les deux premières catégories. Après en avoir dressé un catalogue, on examine les implications historiques de cette présence, apparemment unique dans la moitié orientale de la Méditerranée, sous l'angle des modalités de la (...) diffusion (il ne s'agit sans doute pas d'un véritable commerce, mais de chargements d'accompagnement), de la chronologie (ces apports commencent dès avant le milieu du IIe s.), de l'usage (les vases à boire sont absents, probablement remplacés par d'autres catégories de vaisselle), des origines géographiques de cette céramique (Étrurie, confins du Latium et de la Campanie, golfe de Naples). Ce sont là autant d'indices qui peuvent contribuer à éclairer la présence italienne à Délos. (shrink)

On décèle une tension entre deux tendances dans la philosophie aristotélicienne de la praxis : d’une part; une insistance claire sur la spécificité de l’action humaine par rapport à la conduite animale ; d’autre part; la volonté de définir un genre commun pour les différents types d’activités; humaines et animales. Si cette tension peut être surmontée; c’est sans doute en distinguant les différents registres (axiologique; psychologique; éthologique) du discours aristotélicien. C’est aussi en précisant le type de ressemblance qui; à la (...) fois; rapproche et distingue l’homme de l’animal : si la conduite humaine et la conduite animale appartiennent à un genre commun; elles demeurent distinguées par un rapport d’analogie; c’est-à-dire par une différence irréductible.
