Regulation of genomic and biobanking research in Africa: a content analysis of ethics guidelines, policies and procedures from 22 African countries.Jantina de Vries, Syntia Nchangwi Munung, Alice Matimba, Sheryl McCurdy, Odile Ouwe Missi Oukem-Boyer, Ciara Staunton, Aminu Yakubu & Paulina Tindana - 2017 - BMC Medical Ethics 18 (1):1-9.
The introduction of genomics and biobanking methodologies to the African research context has also introduced novel ways of doing science, based on values of sharing and reuse of data and samples. This shift raises ethical challenges that need to be considered when research is reviewed by ethics committees, relating for instance to broad consent, the feedback of individual genetic findings, and regulation of secondary sample access and use. Yet existing ethics guidelines and regulations in Africa do not successfully regulate research (...)

Obtaining informed consent for genomics research in Africa: analysis of H3Africa consent documents.Nchangwi Syntia Munung, Patricia Marshall, Megan Campbell, Katherine Littler, Francis Masiye, Odile Ouwe-Missi-Oukem-Boyer, Janet Seeley, D. J. Stein, Paulina Tindana & Jantina de Vries - 2016 - Journal of Medical Ethics 42 (2):132-137.
Background The rise in genomic and biobanking research worldwide has led to the development of different informed consent models for use in such research. This study analyses consent documents used by investigators in the H3Africa (Human Heredity and Health in Africa) Consortium. Methods A qualitative method for text analysis was used to analyse consent documents used in the collection of samples and data in H3Africa projects. Thematic domains included type of consent model, explanations of genetics/genomics, data sharing and feedback of (...)

Ethics of Human Genetic Studies in Sub‐Saharan Africa: The Case of Cameroon Through a Bibliometric Analysis.Ambroise Wonkam, Marcel Azabji Kenfack, Walinjom F. T. Muna & Odile Ouwe-Missi-Oukem-Boyer - 2011 - Developing World Bioethics 11 (3):120-127.
Many ethical concerns surrounding human genetics studies remain unresolved. We report here the situation in Cameroon. Objectives: To describe the profile of human genetic studies that used Cameroonian DNA samples, with specific focus on i) the research centres that were involved, ii) authorship, iii) population studied, iv) research topics and v) ethics disclosure, with the aim of raising ethical issues that emerged from these studies.Method: Bibliometric Studies; we conducted a PubMed-based systematic review of all the studies on human genetics that used (...)

Are students kidding with health research ethics? The case of HIV/aids research in Cameroon.Nchangwi Syntia Munung, Godfrey B. Tangwa, Chi Primus Che, Laurent Vidal & Odile Ouwe-Missi-Oukem-Boyer - 2012 - BMC Medical Ethics 13 (1):1-7.
Background Universities in Cameroon are playing an active part in HIV/AIDS research and much of this research is carried out by students, usually for the purpose of a dissertation/thesis. Student theses/dissertations present research findings in a much more comprehensive manner and have been described as the stepping-stone of a budding scientist’s potential in becoming an independent researcher. It is therefore important to verify how students handle issues of research ethics. Method Theses/dissertations on HIV/AIDS that described research studies involving the use (...)

Small is beautiful: demystifying and simplifying standard operating procedures: a model from the ethics review and consultancy committee of the Cameroon Bioethics Initiative.Odile Ouwe Missi Oukem-Boyer, Nchangwi Syntia Munung & Godfrey B. Tangwa - 2016 - BMC Medical Ethics 17 (1):1.
Research ethics review is a critical aspect of the research governance framework for human subjects research. This usually requires that research protocols be submitted to a research ethics committee for review and approval. This has led to very rapid developments in the domain of research ethics, as RECs proliferate all over the globe in rhyme with the explosion in human subjects research. The work of RECs has increasingly become elaborate, complex, and in many cases urgent, necessitating supporting rules and procedures (...)

Global health inequalities and the need for solidarity: a view from the Global South.Mbih J. Tosam, Primus Che Chi, Nchangwi Syntia Munung, Odile Ouwe Missi Oukem-Boyer & Godfrey B. Tangwa - 2017 - Developing World Bioethics 18 (3):241-249.
Although the world has experienced remarkable progress in health care since the last half of the 20th century, global health inequalities still persist. In some poor countries life expectancy is between 37-40 years lower than in rich countries; furthermore, maternal and infant mortality is high and there is lack of access to basic preventive and life-saving medicines, as well a high prevalence of neglected diseases, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria. Moreover, globalization has made the world more connected than before such that (...)

A perpetual source of DNA or something really different: ethical issues in the creation of cell lines for African genomics research.Jantina de Vries, Akin Abayomi, James Brandful, Katherine Littler, Ebony Madden, Patricia Marshall, Odile Ouwe Oukem-Boyer & Janet Seeley - 2014 - BMC Medical Ethics 15 (1):60.
The rise of genomic studies in Africa – not least due to projects funded under H3Africa – is associated with the development of a small number of biorepositories across Africa. For the ultimate success of these biorepositories, the creation of cell lines including those from selected H3Africa samples would be beneficial. In this paper, we map ethical challenges in the creation of cell lines.

The tyranny of virtue: identity, the academy, and the hunt for political heresies.Robert Boyers - 2019 - New York: Scribner.
Written from the perspective of a liberal intellectual who has spent a lifetime as a writer, editor, and college professor, The Tyranny of Virtue is a precise and nuanced insider's look at shifts in American culture--most especially in the American academy--that so many people find alarming. Part memoir and part polemic, an anatomy of important and dangerous ideas, and a cri de coeur lamenting the erosion of standard liberal values, Boyers's collection of essays is devoted to such subjects as tolerance, (...)

  17. The addition of bounded quantification and partial functions to a computational logic and its theorem prover.Robert Boyer - manuscript
We describe an extension to our quantifier-free computational logic to provide the expressive power and convenience of bounded quantifiers and partial functions. By quantifier we mean a formal construct which introduces a bound or indicial variable whose scope is some subexpression of the quantifier expression. A familiar quantifier is the Σ operator which sums the values of an expression over some range of values on the bound variable. Our method is to represent expressions of the logic as objects in the (...)

Metafunctions in nqthm and acl.Robert Boyer - manuscript
Meta-level reasoning was added to the Boyer-Moore theorem prover by 1979. We have recently re-implemented and, we think, slightly improved our approach to meta-theoretic reasoning in the Acl2 theorem prover. However, there is lots of room for much more substantial improvement. Our talk will consist of 3 parts: review, recent results, and general remarks.

Decent Work in the South African Macroeconomy: Who are The Winners and Losers?Odile Mackett - 2022 - Humanistic Management Journal 7 (2):277-305.
Concerns related to the future of work has precipitated various studies aimed at ensuring that the labour market is a place where people can earn a living, work in dignity, and flourish as human beings. Studies on labour market inequalities and how macroeconomic policies can be used to address such inequalities are also plentiful. What macroeconomic studies have often failed to do, however, is highlight the differences _between_ individuals in the labour market. This is important, especially in an economy with (...)

Objet matériel doté de fonctions symboliques, l’uniforme introduit l’historien au cœur du fonctionnement d’un milieu social qui est alors l’un des laboratoires de la masculinité. Postmortem reproduction refers to normally unnatural situations that are made possible by modern medical technology. It's a definition that applies to a situation in which one parent of an offspring is dead at the time of conception of the offspring or at the time of birth of the offspring. It is a situation which raises complex and multifactorial dilemma as with most issues that concern decisions over human life; accordingly, this discussion of its ethical ramifications is not intended to be (...)

Theory can be more than it used to be: learning anthropology's method in a time of transition.Dominic Boyer, James D. Faubion & George E. Marcus (eds.) - 2015 - London: Cornell University Press.
Within anthropology, as elsewhere in the human sciences, there is a tendency to divide knowledge making into two separate poles: conceptual (theory) vs. empirical (ethnography). In Theory Can Be More than It Used to Be, Dominic Boyer, James D. Faubion, and George E. Marcus argue that we need to take a step back from the assumption that we know what theory is to investigate how theory—a matter of concepts, of analytic practice, of medium of value, of professional ideology—operates in (...)

The sumptuary laws enacted by the City-states of Bologna, Venice, Perugia, Siena bring to (...)
