Understanding Derrida, understanding modernism.Jean-Michel Rabaté (ed.) - 2019 - New York: Bloomsbury Academic.
This volume makes a significant contribution to both the study of Derrida and of modernist studies. The contributors argue, first, that deconstruction is not "modern"; neither is it "postmodern" nor simply "modernist." They also posit that deconstruction is intimately connected with literature, not because deconstruction would be a literary way of doing philosophy, but because literature stands out as a "modern" notion. The contributors investigate the nature and depth of Derrida's affinities with writers such as Joyce, Kafka, Antonin Artaud, Georges (...)

After Derrida: literature, theory and criticism in the 21st century.Jean-Michel Rabaté (ed.) - 2018 - New York, NY: Cambridge University Press.
It is important for the materialist historian, in the most rigorous way possible, to differentiate the construction of a historical state of affairs from what one customarily calls its "reconstruction." The "reconstruction" in empathy is one- dimensional. "Construction" presupposes "destruction." Almost fourteen years after the death of Jacques Derrida, the least one can say is that his inheritance is as contested and fraught with rivalries, rejections, and appropriations as at the time of the flowering of Deconstruction in American universities in (...)

Les guerres de Jacques Derrida.Jean-Michel Rabaté - 2016 - Montréal: Les Presses de l'Université de Montréal.
Derrida, quel diable d'homme!

The pathos of distance: affects of the moderns.Jean-Michel Rabaté - 2016 - New York: Bloomsbury Academic, an imprint of Bloomsbury Publishing.
Jean-Michel Rabaté uses Nietzsche's image of a "pathos of distance," the notion that certain values cannot originate in a community but are created by a few gifted and lofty individuals, as the basis for a wide-ranging investigation into the ethics of the moderns. The expression of "pathos of distance" impressed would-be modernists like the American James Huneker and the Irish poet W. B. Yeats as they confronted the new in the arts. Later, it helped Deleuze and Barthes make sense of (...)

    Intuitionistic Non-normal Modal Logics: A General Framework.Tiziano Dalmonte, Charles Grellois & Nicola Olivetti - 2020 - Journal of Philosophical Logic 49 (5):833-882.
We define a family of intuitionistic non-normal modal logics; they can be seen as intuitionistic counterparts of classical ones. We first consider monomodal logics, which contain only Necessity or Possibility. We then consider the more important case of bimodal logics, which contain both modal operators. In this case we define several interactions between Necessity and Possibility of increasing strength, although weaker than duality. We thereby obtain a lattice of 24 distinct bimodal logics. For all logics we provide both a Hilbert (...)

‎Proof Theory for Fuzzy Logics.George Metcalfe, Nicola Olivetti & Dov M. Gabbay - 2008 - Dordrecht, Netherland: Springer.
Fuzzy logics are many-valued logics that are well suited to reasoning in the context of vagueness. They provide the basis for the wider field of Fuzzy Logic, encompassing diverse areas such as fuzzy control, fuzzy databases, and fuzzy mathematics. This book provides an accessible and up-to-date introduction to this fast-growing and increasingly popular area. It focuses in particular on the development and applications of "proof-theoretic" presentations of fuzzy logics; the result of more than ten years of intensive work by researchers (...)

Dying from Immortality: Notes for a Discussion with Martin Hägglund.Jean-Michel Rabaté - 2013 - Derrida Today 6 (2):169-181.
This paper praises Martin Hägglund for his general take on Derrida, while objecting to a certain rigidity in the use of the concept of survival. This concept allowed Hägglund to reject the temptation of a ‘religious’ Derrida in Radical Atheism, but in Dying for Time, it leads to a hurried reading of psychoanalysis. My objections revolve around several forms: the role of gods for Plato and Greek thought; the reductive reading of Diotima's speech in the Sympoisum, and an all too (...)

  18. The Cambridge companion to Lacan.Jean-Michel Rabaté (ed.) - 2003 - New York: Cambridge University Press.
Jacques Lacan is renowned as a theoretician of psychoanalysis whose work is still influential in many countries. He refashioned psychoanalysis in the name of philosophy and linguistics at a time when it faced certain intellectual decline. Focusing on key terms in Lacan's often difficult, idiosyncratic development of psychoanalysis, this volume brings new perspectives to the work of an intimidating influential thinker.

Un antropocentrista apelará a la utilidad del medio ambiente y de las especies que en él habitan para la vida humana; y por ello sería importante que cuidara del ecosistema para mantener dichos beneficios. Regularities, context, and neural coding: Are universals reflected in the experienced world?Antonino Raffone, Marta Olivetti Belardinelli & Cees van Leeuwen - 2001 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 24 (4):701-702.
Barlow's concept of the exploitation of environmental statistical regularities may be more plausibly related to brain mechanisms than Shepard's notion of internalisation. In our view, Barlow endorses a bottom-up approach to neural coding and processing, whereas we suggest that feedback interactions in the visual system, as well as chaotic correlation dynamics in the brain, are crucial in exploiting and assimilating environmental regularities. We also discuss the “conceptual tension” between Shepard's ideas of law internalisation and evolutionary adaptation. [Barlow; Shepard].

    Tableaux for Łukasiewicz Infinite-valued Logic.Nicola Olivetti - 2003 - Studia Logica 73 (1):81-111.
In this work we propose a labelled tableau method for Łukasiewicz infinite-valued logic Lω. The method is based on the Kripke semantics of this logic developed by Urquhart [25] and Scott [24]. On the one hand, our method falls under the general paradigm of labelled deduction [8] and it is rather close to the tableau systems for sub-structural logics proposed in [4]. On the other hand, it provides a CoNP decision procedure for Lω validity by reducing the check of branch (...)

The Cambridge Introduction to Literature and Psychoanalysis.Jean-Michel Rabaté - 2014 - Cambridge University Press.
This volume is an introduction to the relationship between psychoanalysis and literature. Jean-Michel Rabaté takes Sigmund Freud as his point of departure, studying in detail Freud's integration of literature in the training of psychoanalysts and how literature provided crucial terms for his myriad theories, such as the Oedipus complex. Rabaté subsequently surveys other theoreticians such as Wilfred Bion, Marie Bonaparte, Carl Jung, Jacques Lacan, and Slavoj Žižek. This Introduction is organized thematically, examining in detail important terms like deferred action, fantasy, (...)

Product logic Π is an important t-norm based fuzzy logic with conjunction interpreted as multiplication on the real unit interval [0,1], while Cancellative hoop logic CHL is a related logic with connectives interpreted as for Π but on the real unit interval with 0 removed (0,1]. Here we present several analytic proof systems for Π and CHL, including hypersequent calculi, co-NP labelled calculi and sequent calculi.

    Bourdieu and Working-Class Neighbourhoods: What Place for Ordinary Aesthetics?Ulysse Rabaté - 2023 - Open Philosophy 6 (1):158-68.
Today, an extensive body of research has been produced on the history of mobilisation by residents of working-class neighbourhoods in France and by those who identify with them. These analyses have changed our understanding of contemporary mobilisations, but the existing discourse should not prevent us from reflecting on the alternative modes of engagement that are emerging in these neighbourhoods. These commitments contribute to the “making” of a distinct political culture, rooted in practices and discourses hybridised within working-class lifestyles. Is there (...)

SIGNS and MEANINGS: Pataphallics: Jarry’s Novels and Ityphallicism.Jean-Michel Rabaté - 2014 - Human and Social Studies 3 (2):80-89.
This article discusses Alfred Jarry as a precursor of French modernism. With a particular focus on Messaline, Roman de l’ancienne Rome and Le Surmâle, Roman moderne, I analyse the subtle ways in which the past and the future are intertwined and Jarry’s philosophy of sexual excess. In both novels, the main characters seek a paroxysmal erotic pleasure from which they die after reaching world records in sex-making. Read together, the novels work to create a lemniscate, the symbol of infinity symbolically (...)

Starting from the various ways in which the name of James Joyce is evoked in Cixous's critical books and essays, I sketch her unique position as a writer between psychoanalysis and philosophy. If James Joyce's last name can be translated as ‘Freud’ in German, if his first name can be variously Jim, James or even Jacques, then we may translate him into French as Jacques Joyeux. Taking my cue from varying strategies of address deployed in The Exile of James Joyce, (...)

In this work we develop goal-directed deduction methods for the implicational fragment of several modal logics. We give sound and complete procedures for strict implication of K, T, K4, S4, K5, K45, KB, KTB, S5, G and for some intuitionistic variants. In order to achieve a uniform and concise presentation, we first develop our methods in the framework of Labelled Deductive Systems [Gabbay 96]. The proof systems we present are strongly analytical and satisfy a basic property of cut admissibility. We (...)

The logic of Conditional Beliefs has been introduced by Board, Baltag, and Smets to reason about knowledge and revisable beliefs in a multi-agent setting. In this article both the semantics and the proof theory for this logic are studied. First, a natural semantics forCDLis defined in terms of neighbourhood models, a multi-agent generalisation of Lewis’ spheres models, and it is shown that the axiomatization ofCDLis sound and complete with respect to this semantics. Second, it is shown that the neighbourhood semantics (...)
