    My Capitalism Is Bigger Than Yours!Maïa Pal - 2018 - Historical Materialism 26 (3):99-124.
This article reviews Alex Anievas and Kerem Nişancıoğlu’s How the West Came to Rule: The Geopolitical Origins of Capitalism. It argues that the book offers a stimulating and ambitious approach to solving the problems of Eurocentrism and the origins of capitalism in growing critical scholarship in historical sociology and International Relations. However, by focusing on the ‘problem of the international’ and proposing a ‘single unified theory’ based on uneven and combined development, the authors present a history of international relations that (...)

  3. Socioeconomic Differentials in Nutritional Status of Children in the States of West Bengal and Assam, India.Suparna Som, Manoranjan Pal, Bishwanath Bhattacharya, Susmita Bharati & Premananda Bharati - 2006 - Journal of Biosocial Science 38 (5):625-642.
Malnutrition among children is prevalent in almost all the states in India. This study assesses the extent and causes of malnutrition in two eastern Indian states with similar climates, namely West Bengal and Assam, using data from the National Family Health Survey 1998s educational status, working status of the mother, mother’s age at delivery of the children, source of drinking water, toilet facilities and standard of living of the household. Logistic regression was carried out separately for each of the three (...)

Introduction to ‘Britain Versus France: How Many Sonderwegs?’.Maïa Pal - 2016 - Historical Materialism 24 (1):3-10.
In memoriamof the late Ellen Meiksins Wood, this piece firstly remembers the main achievements of her forty years of work. Secondly, it introduces one of her contributions, ‘Britain versus France: How ManySonderwegs?’, until now unavailable in an anglophone publication and reprinted in the present issue. This contribution is a useful reformulation of her arguments concerning radical historicity, the concept of ‘bourgeois revolution’, and the specificity of French and British state formation and their political revolutions – in contrast to arguments for (...)

Basic Relevant Theories for Combinators at Levels I and II.Koushik Pal & Robert K. Meyer - 2005 - Australasian Journal of Logic 3:14-32.
The system B+ is the minimal positive relevant logic. B+ is trivially extended to B+T on adding a greatest truth T. If we leave ∨ out of the formation apparatus, we get the fragment B∧T. It is known that the set of ALL B∧T theories provides a good model for the combinators CL at Level-I, which is the theory level. Restoring ∨ to get back B+T was not previously fruitful at Level-I, because the set of all B+T theories is NOT (...)

Malnutrition and Anaemia Among Adult Women in India.Susmita Bharati, Manoranjan Pal, Soumendu Sen & Premananda Bharati - 2019 - Journal of Biosocial Science 51 (5):658-668.
The latest National Family Health Survey conducted in 2015–16 showed that malnutrition and anaemia still pose huge health challenges in India. Data on 651,642 adult non-pregnant women aged 15–49 years were taken from the survey to study the nutritional and anaemia statuses of adult women by Indian zone and state. The relationships of these two variables with the women’s urban/rural place of residence, education level, religion and eating habits, and wealth index of the family, were assessed. Body Mass Index and (...)

    Transport and Dielectric Properties of V 2 O 5 -MnO-TeO 2 Glasses.Manisha Pal, K. Sega, B. Chaudhuri & H. Sakata - 2003 - Philosophical Magazine 83 (11):1379-1391.
The frequency and temperature dependences of the ac conductivity and dielectric constant of the V 2 O 5 -MnO-TeO 2 system, containing two transition-metal ions, have been measured. The dc conductivity † dc measured in the high-temperature range decreases with addition of the oxide MnO. This is considered to be due to the formation of bonds such as V--O--Mn and Mn--O--Mn in the glass. The conductivity arises mainly from polaron hopping between V 4+ and V 5+ ions. It is found (...)

The Product Guides the Process: Discovering Disease Mechanisms.Lindley Darden, Lipika R. Pal, Kunal Kundu & John Moult - 2018 - In David Danks & Emiliano Ippoliti (eds.), Building Theories: Heuristics and Hypotheses in Sciences. Springer International Publishing.
The nature of the product to be discovered guides the reasoning to discover it. Biologists and medical researchers often search for mechanisms. The "new mechanistic philosophy of science" provides resources about the nature of biological mechanisms that aid the discovery of mechanisms. Here, we apply these resources to the discovery of mechanisms in medicine. A new diagrammatic representation of a disease mechanism chain indicates both what is known and, most significantly, what is not known at a given time, thereby guiding (...)

SummaryIt is well known that height and weight are interrelated, and that both are related to socioeconomic variables. The objective of this study was to assess the effect of socioeconomic variables on the heights and weights of different groups of people, formed according to different levels of heights and weights, and to see whether there are sex differences in the variations in heights and weights. Data for adults aged 15–49 years were taken from the India National Family Health Survey-3 and (...)

Gender "Tailored" Conceptions: Should the Option of Embryo Gender Selection Be Available to Infertile Couples Undergoing Assisted Reproductive Technology?Z. O. Merhi & L. Pal - 2008 - Journal of Medical Ethics 34 (8):590-593.
The purpose of this article is to ascertain and appraise the ethical issues inherent to the utilisation of preimplantation genetic diagnosis for gender selection in infertile patients anticipating undergoing a medically indicated assisted reproductive technique procedure. Performance of preimplantation genetic diagnosis per request specifically for gender selection by an infertile couple undergoing medically indicated assisted reproductive technique may not breach the principles of ethics, and is unlikely to alter the population balance of sexes.

BackgroundFamily presence during adult cardiopulmonary resuscitation is still not widely implemented. Based on empirical evidence, various national and international professional organizations recommend allowing relatives to be present during resuscitation. However, healthcare providers worldwide are still reluctant to make it standard care.PurposeThis paper is a part of an ongoing cross-cultural study that aims to solicit attitudes of healthcare providers working in emergency departments towards family presence during cardiopulmonary resuscitation. This paper reports the qualitative data from surveying healthcare providers working in an (...)

The theory of valued difference fields (K, σ, υ) depends on how the valuation υ interacts with the automorphism σ. Two special cases have already been worked out - the isometric case, where υ(σ(x)) = υ(x) for all x Î G has been worked out by Luc Belair, Angus Macintyre and Thomas Scanlon; and the contractive case, where υ(σ(x)) > nv(x) for all x Î K x with υ(x) > 0 and n Î N, has been worked out by Salih (...)
