The topic of this article is the relation between the modern process of globalization and democracy. The agenda starts with the concept of globalization, its different meanings and various layers, traps and paradoxes, consequences and effects, advantages and disadvantages in the horizon of contemporary life. Following a brief introduction into the theme, the article outlines a short historic philosophical review into the development of globalization from theancient times to the contemporary world. The focus of the philosophical view is that of (...) two significant authorities and opposite approaches in the process of developing ‘World Society’ – Immanuel Kant and Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel. Kant explained the means to the status of ‘World Civility’ as a ‘Natural Purpose’. Hegel exposed the necessity of the development of world history to the state of global freedom. The question: Does the process of making global society threaten democracy in the modern world - is the key issue nowadays. All agree that the globalization process diminishes the area of the authentic political acting. Democracy originates from the ‘polis’ or small town republic and is a symbol of the government in the small political community. The step from the polis democracy to the national state democracy was the result of change from the direct to the representative democracy. The transition from the national to the supranational and global politics requires new essential transformation of the being of democracy. (shrink)

U članku je riječ o bitnim obilježjima i modelu demokratskoga odgoja u Deweyevu djelu. Polazno je pitanje: što za suvremenu deliberativnu demokraciju znači Deweyev koncept odgoja i obrazovanja. Može li se njegov etički ideal čovječnosti primijeniti kao filozofski temelj za vrednovanje i opravdanje demokratske prakse? Je li Dewey potkopao i razorio temelje liberalizma, kako je tvrdio Richard Rorty? Ili njegova obnova filozofije zapravo tek vraća u život liberalizam i otvara nove putove demokraciji? Najnoviji val recepcije Deweyeve filozofije sve dubljim intenzitetom (...) pokazuje zacijelo da iz njezina misaonoga naslijeđa plodonosnim sudarima s idejama i tendencijama suvremenoga doba izlazi na vidjelo nešto što ujedno prekoračuje okvir suvremenosti i upućuje na budućnost. U aktualnoj renesansi pragmatizma posebice je znakovito primijetiti kako Deweyeva vrhunski profinjena kritika modernoga »individualizma« i zagovor jačanja ćudorednih i participativno demokratskih poveznica u lokalnim zajednicama pronalazi odjeka u komunitarističkim argumentacijskim diskursima. Zaključna je teza da Dewey isticanjem supstancijalne povezanosti »communicatio–community–common« ne ruši temelje liberalizma i demokracije nego ih štoviše obogaćuje, učvršćuje i podiže na višu razinu. Im Aufsatz geht es um wesentliche Merkmale und Modell der demokratischen Erziehung bei Dewey. Die Ausgangsfrage lautet: ob und was Deweys Bildungskonzept für die zeitgenössische deliberative Demokratie zu bedeuten hat. Kann sein ethisches Ideal der Menschheit als philosophisches Fundament zur Rechtfertigung der demokratischen Praxis angewendet werden? Hat Dewey die philosophischen Grundlagen des Liberalismus untergraben und abgeschafft, wie es Richard Rorty behauptet? Oder bringt seine Erneuerung der Philosophie zugleich die Wiederbelebung des Liberalismus und eröffnet neue Wege für Demokratie? Die neueste Rezeptionswelle (...) der deweyschen Philosophie mit einer sich stetig vertiefenden Intensität zeigt wohl, dass aus ihrem Gedankengut durch die fruchtbaren Zusammenstöße mit den Ideen und Tendenzen des gegenwärtigen Zeitalters etwas zutage tritt, was zugleich den Rahmen der Gegenwart überschreitet und auf die Zukunft hinweist. In der aktuellen Renaissance des Pragmatismus ist besonders merkwürdig, wie Deweys höchst ausdifferenzierte Kritik am modernen „Individualismus“ und Befürwortung der Stärkung der sittlichen und partizipativ-demokratischen Bindungen in den lokalen Gemeinschaften ein Echo in den kommunitaristischen Argumentationsdiskursen gefunden hat. Die Schlussthese besagt, dass Dewey mit der Hervorhebung des substanziellen Zusammenhangs der Kommunikation , der Gemeinschaft und des Gemeinsamen die Grundlagen des Liberalismus und der Demokratie keineswegs untergraben, sondern sie bereichert, gefestigt und auf eine höhere Ebene gehoben hat. The article elaborates on the essential characteristics and model of democratic education in Dewey’s works. It starts with the question: what is the meaning of Dewey’s concept of education regarding the contemporary deliberative democracy? Can his ethical ideal of humanity be applied as a philosophical basis for the evaluation and justification of democratic practices? Did Dewey undermine and destroy the foundations of liberalism, as suggested by Richard Rorty? Or does his reconstruction of philosophy actually bring liberalism back to life and (...) opens new paths to democracy? The latest wave of reception of Dewey’s philosophy expresses with increasing intensity that something, which at the same time exceeds the framework of modernity and points to the future, emerges from his legacy of thought through fruitful collisions with the ideas and tendencies of the modern age. In the current renaissance of pragmatism, it is especially significant to note that Dewey’s highly sophisticated critique of the modern “individualism”, together with his advocacy of strengthening the moral and participative democracy links in local communities, finds its way in communitarian argumentation discourses. The concluding thesis states that Dewey does not destroy the foundations of liberalism and democracy by emphasizing the substantial connection “communicatio–community–common”, but rather enriches, strengthens, and brings them to a higher level. Das Thema dieser Arbeit ist der Bezug zwischen dem modernen Globalisierungsprozess und der Demokratie. Untersucht werden zunächst das Konzept der Demokratie, seine unterschiedlichen Bedeutungen und verschiedenen Bedeutungsschichten, seine Tücken und Paradoxe, Konsequenzen und Ergebnisse sowie Vor- und Nachteile im zeitgenössischen Lebenshorizont. Auf den Einleitungsteil, der den Leser mit dem Thema bekannt macht, folgt eine kurze geschichtsphilosophische Darstellung zur Entwicklung der Globalisierung von der Antike bis auf unsere Tage. Im Brennpunkt der philosophischen Untersuchung stehen die Positionen zweier maßgeblichen Autoritäten und ihre (...) gegensätzlichen Ansätze bei der Entwicklung einer ,Weltgesellschaft’ – gemeint sind Immanuel Kant und Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel. Kant erklärte die Mittel zur Schaffung eines ,Weltbürgertums’ als ,natürliche Zwecke’. Hegel legte die Entwicklung der Weltgeschichte zum Zustand globaler Freiheit als eine Notwendigkeit dar. Wird die Demokratie in der modernen Welt durch die Entstehung einer globalen Gesellschaft gefährdet? – so lautet die Schlüsselfrage heute. Alle Autoren, die sich mit dieser Frage beschäftigen, sind sich darin einig, dass durch den Globalisierungsprozess der Bereich authentischen politischen Handelns geschwächt wird. Die Demokratie hat ihren Ursprung in der Polis bzw. dem kleinen Stadtstaat und ist Symbol für die Herrschaftsform in einem kleinen politischen Gemeinwesen. Die Entwicklung von der Demokratie der Polis zur Demokratie des Nationalstaats war das Ergebnis des Wandels von der direkten zur repräsentativen Demokratie. Der Übergang von der Ebene der nationalen auf die Ebene der supranationalen und globalen Politik erfordert eine neue, grundlegende Transformation des Wesens der Demokratie. (shrink)

Le sujet de cet article est le rapport entre le processus actuel de mondialisation et la démocratie. Le plan de travail démarre par le concept de démocratie, ses différents niveaux et significations, ses pièges et ses paradoxes, ses effets et ses conséquences, ses avantages et ses inconvénients dans l’horizon de la vie contemporaine. Après l’introduction, l’article trace un aperçu historico- philosophique de l’évolution de la mondialisation des temps anciens jusqu’au monde contemporain. Le point de vue philosophique central est celui d’Immanuel (...) Kant et de Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel – deux autorités et deux approches du processus de développement d’une « société mondiale » opposées. Kant a expliqué les moyens du statut de « citoyenneté mondiale » comme une « finalité naturelle ». Hegel a exposé la nécessité de l’évolution de l’histoire mondiale jusqu’à l’état d’une liberté globale. La question de savoir si le processus de création d’une société mondiale met en danger la démocratie dans le monde contemporain est aujourd’hui une question clé. Tout le monde s’accorde pour dire que le processus de mondialisation affaiblit le champ de l’action politique authentique. La démocratie tire son origine de « polis », la petite Cité-Etat, et symbolise la gouvernance dans une petite communauté politique. Le pas entre la démocratie du polis vers la démocratie de l’Etat nation a été le résultat de la mutation de la démocratie directe vers la démocratie représentative. Le passage d’une politique nationale à une politique supranationale et mondiale nécessite une nouvelle transformation importante de la nature de la démocratie. (shrink)

Dans l’article, il est question du modèle et des traits essentiels de l’éducation démocratique dans l’oeuvre de Dewey. La question suivante sert de point de départ : que signifient les concepts d’éducation et d’enseignement de Dewey pour la démocratie délibérative contemporaine ? Son idéal éthique de l’humanité peut-il fonder philosophiquement la valorisation et la justification de la pratique démocratique ? Dewey a-t-il sapé les fondements du libéralisme, comme l’affirmait Richard Rorty ? Ou son renouveau de la philosophie fait-elle revenir en (...) réalité le libéralisme à la vie et n’ouvre-t-elle pas de nouvelles voies pour la démocratie ? La dernière vague de la réception de la philosophie de Dewey montre certainement de plus en plus profondément que l’héritage de sa pensée, grâce aux confrontations fructueuses avec des idées et tendances contemporaines, fait ressortir quelque chose qui dépasse le cadre de la contemporanéité et qui implique l’avenir. Dans l’actuelle renaissance du pragmatisme, il est intéressant de noter que la critique profondément subtile que Dewey fait de l’ « individualisme » moderne, ainsi que sa défense du renforcement des liens moraux et démocratiques participatifs dans les communautés locales, trouve l’écho dans les arguments communautaristes. Pour conclure, en soulignant le rapport substantiel entre la communication , la communauté et le commun , Dewey ne mine pas les fondements du libéralisme et de la démocratie, mais au contraire les enrichit, les renforce et les élève à un niveau supérieur. The paper outlines the historical development of question about ambiguous and mysterious human nature, in particular considering the reasons and conditions for the founding of modern philosophical anthropology. Subsequently, it brings an overview of the conceptual beginnings and directions of anthropological research in Croatia. The focus is on the following questions: When did the investigations begin in the field of philosophical anthropology, in what kind of thinking environments were they shaped and what scientific achievements were reached? The presentation brings to (...) light the cognition that philosophical anthropology in Croatia got its first contours and valuable contributions to the very beginning of the contemporary renewal of this discipline, shortly after its phenomenological and scientific revivals in the ventures of Scheler and Plessner. The development of this research branch is, according to Hans Lankʼs model, divided into four main conceptual orientations. The anthropology from above shows the creative contributions of Stjepan Zimmermann, Vilim Keilbach, Rajmund Kupareo, Miljenko Belić, Ante Kusić, Josip Ćurić, Hrvoje Lasić and Ivan Koprek. The anthropology from below is illustrated by the reference to the research by Vera Ehrlich-Stein, Rudi Supek, the Institute of Anthropology, Pavao Rudan and Darko Polšek. For the anthropology from culture, the philosophical achievements of Pavao Vuk-Pavlović, Vladimir Filipović, Vjekoslav Mikecin, Esad Ćimić, Nikola Skledar, Branka Brujić, Milan Galović and Mihaela Girardi-Karšulin were delineated. Under the anthropology from history, the works of Predrag Vranicki, Milan Kangrga, Vanja Sutlić, Gaja Petrović, Hotimir Burger, Mislava Kukoč and Raul Raunić are outlined. The conclusion summarises four insights. 1. Philosophical anthropology is an under-researched and not enough appreciated field, which represents one of the most fertile currents of thought in the 20th century. 2. Creative contributions are presented in all four major orientations. 3. In the context of anthropological research, lively dialogue and a fruitful meeting of different worldviews were realised. 4. The beginnings of the development of the discipline should be moved earlier in history than previously considered, from the 1950s and 1960s to the early 1930s. The last insight points to the need for further exploration of the perceived, and so far largely neglected, continuity of anthropological themes and related ideas in the history of recent philosophy in Croatia. Slijedeći Fichteovu misao da »svatko izabire onakvu filozofiju kakav je tko čovjek«, u članku se ocrtavaju misaoni sklopovi stvaralačkoga opusa Ante Pažanina, u nastojanju da se na taj način osvijetle stožerne sastavnice njegove životne filozofije. Pažaninova istraživanja o filozofiji kao strogoj znanosti, fenomenologiji, praktičnoj filozofiji, etici i politici imaju znatan odjek i utjecaj ne samo u Hrvatskoj nego su zapažena i u svijetu. Na međunarodnoj pozornici privukla je zanimanje njegova osebujna koncepcija normativne političke filozofije u kojoj kritički rasvjetljuje i ukazuje (...) na posljetke suvremene znanstveno-tehničke civilizacije. Nasuprot novovjekovnom odvajanju etike od prava i politike, Pažanin se oslonio na aristotelovsku tradiciju praktične filozofije koja polazi od jedinstva etike i politike. Praktičnu filozofiju promatra kao samostalno i neovisno područje o poietičnoj techne i teoretskoj episteme. Takav pristup praktičnoj filozofiji nadilazi poteškoće aprirornoga univerzalizma teoretskoga utemeljenja etičkih normi te bolje odgovara suvremenoj raznovrsnosti svijeta života i njegovoj složenosti. Pažaninovu životnu filozofsku misiju može se prispodobiti Gadamerovu opisu »nasljedovanja« Aristotela u nastojanju filozofa da se pomoću filozofske teorije stavi u službu ljudske prakse. Njegova je praktična životna filozofija svojevrsno misaono nastojanje oko razumijevanja i posuvremenjenja odnosa između refleksivnih oblika teorije i praktične umnosti povijesnoga svijeta života. Filozofska refleksija za njega ima zadaću ne samo primjereno razumjeti praktični svijet nego ga time i odgovorno mijenjati u nastojanju za ozbiljenjem najvišega ljudskog dobra kao bitne svrhe čovjekova življenja. Dans le cadre des études contemporaines des présuppositions de la démocratie l’auteur se demande s’il est plus opportun d’examiner prioritairement la justice d’un point de vue social ou à un niveau personnel. Ceci est en rapport avec la question de l’objet prioritaire de la justice: la justice est-elle une qualité relevant des institutions sociales ou des individus? D’où la question de savoir quelle justice convient le mieux à la démocratie. Cet article analyse ces questions en trois modèles fondamentaux de la (...) théorie de la justice comme équité: le modèle de Platon, celui d’Aristote et celui de Rawls. Chez Platon il s’agit de la réalisation d’une bonne vie dans la communauté politique selon l’idée de justice que chacun doit faire ce qui lui incombe. La justice d’Aristote est fondée sur l’élaboration systématique de concepts qui dinstinguent les niveaux d’une justice générale et spéciale. Le modèle de Rawls d’une justice séparable repose sur les principes de base du mécanisme des forces d’un ensemble institutionnel fonctionnant dans une société bien organisée. La conclusion démontre que les deux formes de justice conviennent tout à fait à la réalisation de la démocratie. Le mieux c’est lorsque la disposition personnelle à la justice assure la force et le soutien aux institutions sociales de la démocratie. Sans un cadre institutionnel approprié il est impossible de construire la démocratie. De même que, sans un soutien personnel de la part des citoyens lequel se développe à partir d’un accord public, il est impossible de conserver ou de développer la démocratie. Dans un système démocratique il est impossible de séparer la sphère privée des citoyens de leur activité publique. La démocratie a toujours en soi un peu d’idéal politique à l’égard duquel les citoyens ne peuvent pas avoir une attitude neutre. Les questions d’une formation institutionnelle politique des rapports et des questions concernant une vie équitable et à l’avantage de tous relèvent du domaine des préoccupations des citoyens. Si l’idéal démocratique ne se réalise pas par les convictions et les valeurs des citoyens il n’y aura pas de substance pour former l’identité de l’ordre établi des institutions de la société qui soit équitable. S’ils ne la traitent pas comme leur propre bien qu’il faut sauvegarder la démocratie n’aura pas d’avenir. (shrink)

Tema je ovoga članka odnos između modernog procesa globalizacije i demokracije. Razmatranje započinje konceptom demokracije, njegovim različitim značenjima i raznim slojevima, zamkama i paradoksima, posljedicama i učincima, prednostima i nedostatcima u obzoru suvremenog života. Nakon uvoda u temu, članak ocrtava kratki povijesno-filozofijski pregled razvoja globalizacije od drevnih vremena do suvremenog svijeta. Žarište filozofskog gledišta jest ono dvojice značajnih autoriteta i nasuprotnih pristupa u procesu razvoja ‘svjetskog društva’ – Immanuela Kanta i Georga Wilhelma Friedricha Hegela. Kant je objasnio sredstva statusa ‘svjetskog (...) građanstva’ kao ‘prirodne svrhe’. Hegel je izložio nužnost razvoja svjetske povijesti do stanja globalne slobode. Pitanje: ugrožava li process stvaranja globalnog društva demokraciju u modernom svijetu – ključno je pitanje danas. Svi se slažu da globalizacijski proces oslabljuje područje autentičnog političkog djelovanja. Demokracija ima izvor u ‘polisu’ ili malome gradu- republici, te je simbol vladavine u maloj političkoj zajednici. Korak od demokracije polisa prema demokraciji nacionalen države bio je rezultat promjene od izravne prema predstavničkoj demokraciji. Prijelaz s nacionalne na supranacionalnu i globalnu politiku zahtijeva novu bitnu transformaciju demokracije. (shrink)

Im Rahmen der zeitgenössischen Diskussionen über die Voraussetzungen der Demokratie stellt der Verfasser die Frage, ob es verfahrensmäßig angemessener sei, die Gerechtigkeit primär unter dem sozialen Aspekt und nicht im Bezug zur personalen Ebene zu behandeln. Dies hängt mit der Frage nach dem Primärobjekt der Gerechtigkeit zusammen: Ist Gerechtigkeit eine Eigenschaft der Institutionen oder der Einzelnen? Daraus folgt die Frage: Welche Gerechtigkeit bekommt der Demokratie? Im Artikel wird dieser Fragenkomplex an drei Grundmodellen der Gerechtigkeitstheorie abgehandelt: Platon, Aristoteles und Rawls. Bei (...) Platon geht es um die Verwirklichung des guten Lebens in der politischen Gemeinschaft, ausgehend von der Gerechtigkeitsvorstellung, der gemäß jeder das Seinige tun sollte. Aristoteles’ Gerechtigkeitsauffassung geht von der systematischen Ausarbeitung einer Begrifflichkeit aus, die verschiedene Gerechtigkeitsebenen der umfassenden und der partikularen Gerechtigkeit unterscheidet. Rawls’ Modell der Verteilungsgerechtigkeit gründet auf dem Kräftemechanismus eines institutionellen Funktionszusammenhangs in der wohlgeordneten Gesellschaft. Die Schlussthese besagt, dass beide Gerechtigkeitsformen der Verwirklichung der Demokratie gut bekommen. Am besten ist es, wenn die personale Gerechtigkeitsdisposition den sozialen Institutionen der Demokratie Kraft und Unterstützung gibt. Ohne angemessenen institutionellen Rahmen kann man wohl keine Demokratie aufbauen. Jedoch ohne die aus dem grundsätzlichen Einverständnis erwachsende personale Unterstützung seitens der Bürger lässt sich die Demokratie weder erhalten noch weiterentwickeln. In der demokratischen Ordnungsform kann die private Sphäre der Bürger nicht ganz von deren öffentlichem Handeln getrennt werden. Demokratie enthält in sich immer etwas vom politischen Ideal, zu dem die Bürger einen Bezug herstellen sollen, statt in völliger weltanschaulicher Neutralität zu verbleiben. Die Fragen der institutionellen politischen Gestaltung der gesellschaftlichen Verhältnisse wie auch die Fragen des guten und gerechten Lebens gehören zu den Dingen, um die sich die Bürger kümmern sollen. Wenn sie ihr demokratisches Ideal mit ihrer Gesinnung und Tauglichkeit nicht erfüllen, gibt es keine identitätsstiftende Substanz für eine gerechte Ordnung der gesellschaftlichen Institutionen. Wenn sie sich zu ihr nicht als zu ihrem Gemeinsinn und einem zu bewahrenden Gut verhalten, hat Demokratie keine Perspektive. (shrink)

Within the framework of the contemporary discussions of the presuppositions of democracy, the author of this paper poses the question whether discussing justice primarily from the social rather than the personal aspect and level is, perhaps, more appropriate. This ties in with the question of the primary object of justice – is justice the trait of social institutions or individuals? Thus the question of what kind of justice matches democracy. The author explicates this network of questions through three underlying models (...) of the theory of justice – Plato, Aristotle and Rawls’s model. Plato’s model is about the realisation of a good life in a political community in view of the idea of justice that one should do that which is proper to one. Aristotle’s understanding of justice sets forth from a systematic analysis of the concepts that differentiate between the levels of general and particular justice. Rawls’s model of distributive justice rests on the mechanism of the forces of the institutional functional frameworks in well-organised societies. The author’s conclusion is that both forms of justice correspond well to the realisation of democracy. It is best when one’s personal disposition to justice provides strength and support to the social institutions of democracy. Without an adequate institutional framework there is, most certainly, no democracy. Without the personal support of citizens, which issues from fundamental consent, democracy can neither be sustained nor developed. In a democratic system, the private sphere of citizens cannot be fully separated from their public actions. Democracy always and necessarily contains in itself some of the political ideals, which citizens cannot, in their worldviews, relate to neutrally. The questions of the institutional and political shaping of relations, and the questions of the good and just life should be in the interest of the citizens. If they do not accomplish their democratic ideals through their own belief and virtue, then there is no substance that would shape identity for a just system of social institutions. If they do not relate to it as to their own common sense and good to be preserved, democracy has no prospects. (shrink)
