Theoretical Study on Self-Organization of Vegetation Patterns Triggered by Water Resource in Deposited Sediment Layer.Tousheng Huang, Huayong Zhang, Zhao Liu, Ge Pan, Xiumin Zhang & Zichun Gao - 2019 - Complexity 2019:1-11.
This research focuses on the self-organization of vegetation patterns on severely degraded eroding lands, triggered by water resource in the deposited sediment layer on which the (...)vegetation patterns are formed. A nonlinear spatiotemporal model is developed with the consideration of the interactions between vegetation biomass and water resource stored in the sediment layer. With employment of the model, the conditions for pattern formation of the considered ecological system are determined via Turing instability analysis. Numerical simulations of the research demonstrate the formation of banded, labyrinth, and gapped vegetation patterns, with the parameter values taken from the literature. The characteristics of the vegetation patterns are analyzed. Comparing the characteristics of the vegetation patterns of this research with that available in literature, great similarity of pattern formation is shown. The results obtained provide a theoretical comprehension on natural vegetation restoration of severely degraded eroding lands. (shrink)

While the English translation of Thomas Mores Utopia first appeared in 1551, and enjoyed periodic cycles of reincarnation through several retranslations in the centuries to come, (...)a Mandarin edition was not attempted until the mid-1930s. As of 2016five hundred years after Utopia was first publishedten editions and nine translators have been involved in various efforts to transfer Mores canonical work into the Mandarin linguistic and cultural context. The very first Mandarin Chinese edition was translated by Liú Línshēng, published in 1935 by the Taiwan Commercial Press. This edition inaugurated the upsurge in translations of Utopia in the mid-twentieth century. Three editions were produced at this time: Dài... (shrink)

  35. Aesthetics and Marxism: Chinese Aesthetic Marxists and Their Western Contemporaries.Kang Liu - 2000 - Duke University Press.
Although Chinese Marxismprimarily represented by Maoismis generally seen by Western intellectuals as monolithic, Liu Kang argues that its practices and projects are as diverse as those (...) in Western Marxism, particularly in the area of aesthetics. In this comparative study of European and Chinese Marxist traditions, Liu reveals the extent to which Chinese Marxists incorporate ideas about aesthetics and culture in their theories and practices. In doing so, he constructs a wholly new understanding of Chinese Marxism. Far from being secondary considerations in Chinese Marxism, aesthetics and culture are in fact principal concerns. In this respect, such Marxists are similar to their Western counterparts, although Europeans have had little understanding of the Chinese experience. Liu traces the genealogy of aesthetic discourse in both modern China and the West since the era of classical German thought, showing where conceptual modifications and divergences have occurred in the two traditions. He examines the work of Mao Zedong, Lu Xun, Li Zehou, Qu Qiubai, and others in China, and from the West he discusses Kant, Schiller, Schopenhauer, and Marxist theorists including Horkheimer, Adorno, Benjamin, and Marcuse. While stressing the diversity of Marxist positions within China as well as in the West, Liu explains how ideas of culture and aesthetics have offered a constructive vision for a postrevolutionary society and have affected a wide field of issues involving the problems of modernity. Forcefully argued and theoretically sophisticated, this book will appeal to students and scholars of contemporary Marxism, cultural studies, aesthetics, and modern Chinese culture, politics, and ideology. 41. Love of Money and Unethical Behavior Intention: Does an Authentic Supervisors Personal Integrity and Character Make a Difference[REVIEW]Thomas Li-Ping Tang & Hsi Liu - 2012 - Journal of Business Ethics 107 (3):295-312.
We investigate the extent to which perceptions of the authenticity of supervisors personal integrity and character (ASPIRE) moderate the relationship between peoples love of money (LOM (...)) and propensity to engage in unethical behavior (PUB) among 266 part-time employees who were also business students in a five-wave panel study. We found that a high level of ASPIRE perceptions was related to high love-of-money orientation, high self-esteem, but low unethical behavior intention (PUB). Unethical behavior intention (PUB) was significantly correlated with their high Machiavellianism, low self-esteem, and low intrinsic religiosity. Our counterintuitive results revealed that the main effect of LOM on PUB was not significant, but the main effect of ASPIRE on PUB was significant. Further, the significant interaction effect between LOM and ASPIRE on unethical behavior intention provided profoundly interesting findings: High LOM was related to high unethical behavior intention for people with low ASPIRE, but was related to low unethical intention for those with high ASPIRE. People with high LOM and low ASPIRE had the highest unethical behavior intention; whereas those with high LOM and high ASPIRE had the lowest. We discuss results in light of individual differences, ethical environment, and perceived demand characteristics. (shrink)

: Confucianism is often valued as a doctrine that highlights both the individual and social dimensions of the ideal person, for it indeed puts special emphasis on such (...) lofty goals as loving all humanity and cultivating the self. Through a close and critical analysis of the texts of the Analects and the Mencius, however, it is attempted to demonstrate that because Confucius and Mencius always take filial piety, or, more generally, consanguineous affection, as not only the foundation but also the supreme principle of human life, the individual and social dimensions are inevitably subordinated to and substantially negated by the filial precisely within the Confucian framework, with the result that Confucianism in essence is neither collectivism nor individualism, but "consanguinitism.". Explaining the Emergence of Cooperative Phenomena.Chuang Liu - 1999 - Philosophy of Science 66 (3):106.
Phase transitions are well-understood phenomena in thermodynamics (TD), but it turns out that they are mathematically impossible in finite SM systems. Hence, phase transitions are truly (...)emergent properties. They appear again at the thermodynamic limit (TL), i.e., in infinite systems. However, most, if not all, systems in which they occur are finite, so whence comes the justification for taking TL? The problem is then traced back to the TD characterization of phase transitions, and it turns out that the characterization is the result of serious idealizations which under suitable circumstances approximate actual conditions. The recognition memory for inverted faces is especially difficult when compared with that for non-face stimuli. This face inversion effect has often been used as a (...)marker of face-specific holistic processing. However, whether face processing without awareness is still specific remains unknown. The present study addressed this issue by examining the face inversion effect with the technique of binocular rivalry. Results showed that invisible upright faces could break suppression faster than invisible inverted faces. Nevertheless, no difference was found for invisible upright houses and invisible inverted houses. This suggested that face processing without awareness is still specific. Some face-specific information can be processed by high-level brain areas even when that information is invisible. (shrink)
