Decision-Making and Motivation to Participate in Biomedical Research in Southwest Nigeria.Pauline E. Osamor & Nancy Kass - 2012 - Developing World Bioethics 12 (2):87-95.
Motivations and decision-making styles that influence participation in biomedical research vary across study types, cultures, and countries. While there is a small amount of literature on informed consent in non-western cultures, few studies have examined how participants make the decision to join research. This study was designed to identify the factors motivating people to participate in biomedical research in a traditional Nigerian community, assess the degree to which participants involve others in the decision-making process, and examine issues of autonomy in (...)

Ethical Issues in Denial of Church Wedding Based on Couple’s Hemoglobin Genotype in Enugu, South Eastern Nigeria.Euzebus C. Ezugwu, Pauline E. Osamor & David Wendler - 2019 - BMC Medical Ethics 20 (1):1-7.
Background Sickle cell anemia is a major genetic disease with the greatest burden in sub-Saharan Africa. To try to help reduce this burden, some churches in Nigeria conduct premarital sickle cell hemoglobin screening and refuse to conduct weddings when both individuals are identified as carriers of sickle cell trait. Main body This paper explores the ethical challenges involved in such denials. We assess whether churches have the right to decline to marry adults who understand the risks and still prefer to (...)

    Autonomy and Couples’ Joint Decision-Making in Healthcare.Pauline E. Osamor & Christine Grady - 2018 - BMC Medical Ethics 19 (1):1-8.
Background Respect for autonomy is a key principle in bioethics. However, respecting autonomy in practice is complex because most people define themselves and make decisions influenced by a complex network of social relationships. The extent to which individual autonomy operates for each partner within the context of decision-making within marital or similar relationships is largely unexplored. This paper explores issues related to decision-making by couples for health care and the circumstances under which such a practice should be respected as compatible (...)

The first volume has already been translated as The Voluntary and the Involuntary and the first part of the second volume, which is titled generally Finitude et Culpabilité, has been translated as Fallible Man. The third part of the second volume has been projected as an Empirics of the Will, while the third volume has been broadcast as a Poetics (...)

The Last Judgment in Protestant Theology From Orthodoxy to Ritschl. [REVIEW]A. R. E. - 1965 - Review of Metaphysics 18 (3):587-587.
In a competent and well-written survey, the author shows how the cosmic eschatological vision of the New Testament was systematically eliminated from Protestant theology by the end of the nineteenth century as the cumulative effect of the rationalism of the Enlightenment. The author criticizes this departure from the tradition, but fails to explore the possibility that rationalism and the elimination of the eschatological cosmic objective of Christianity was a predictable result of Luther's overemphasis upon forensic justification to the detriment of (...)

    The Basis of Christian Unity. [REVIEW]A. R. E. - 1964 - Review of Metaphysics 18 (2):383-384.
An exposition of John 17 and Ephesians 4, the two Biblical texts that have served as the locus classicus for much recent ecumenical discussion. The book intends to reject a superficial ecumenism which remains doctrinally indifferent or subordinates doctrinal unity to evangelical effort. The author shows that the Johannine and, especially, the Pauline notions of unity presuppose a prior unity of faith with a determinate Scripturally-determined content. This unity in faith must never be sacrificed to the "quantitative, visible, inclusivist, (...)

Factors Associated with Women’s Health Care Decision-Making Autonomy: Empirical Evidence From Nigeria.Pauline Osamor & Christine Grady - 2018 - Journal of Biosocial Science 50 (1):70-85.
SummaryWomen’s decision-making autonomy has been poorly studied in most developing countries. The few existing studies suggest that it is closely linked to women’s socio-demographic characteristics and the social settings in which they live. This study examined Nigerian women’s perceived decision-making autonomy about their own health care using nationally representative data from the 2013 Nigerian Demographic and Health Survey. The study sample consisted of 27,135 women aged 15–49 years who lived with their husbands/partners. Responses to questions about who usually makes decisions (...)

ABSTRACTIn the final volume of his Homo Sacer series, The use of bodies, Agamben claims that for Foucault ethics never escapes the horizon of governmentality and therefore his conception of ethics is ‘strategic.’ In light of this criticism, motivated by Agamben’s Pauline conception of ‘use,’ we reassess the status and function of ethics in Foucault’s late lectures. We investigate how Foucault’s approach to ethics develops from his treatment of liberal governmentality and also how its methodological foundation is developed in (...)

The interpretations of the Pauline expression spiritual body can be indicative to verify the relations between Origen and the Antiochene tradition. After shortly examining such a definition in works of both the contexts, this article summarizes the exterior characteristics of the spiritual body. Are respectively dealt with: its link to the earthly body, the transformation process that led to it. Noticeable analogies have emerged in the importance given to the physical sphere; Antiochene writers, particularly John Chrysostom, gibe however more (...)

Then the article presents an analysis of some aspects of the Correspondence in order to highlight the harmony between the views of the Correspondence and the ideas of Jerome, especially the considerations on the inadequacy of the language (...)

Augustine’s Use of the Pauline Portrayal of Peter in Galatians 2.Geoffrey D. Dunn - 2015 - Augustinian Studies 46 (1):23-42.
The incident at Antioch described in Galatians 2:11–14 features in a number of Augustine’s works: Expositio epistulae ad Galatas, his correspondence with Jerome, De mendacio, Sermo 162C, and in De baptismo contra Donatistas. While a few scholars have seen Augustine’s anti-Donatism as a driving force behind all his comments about this encounter between Peter and Paul, this article argues that, while the idea of Peter’s humility is to be found in his commentary, the sermon, one of the letters, and the (...)

    A C.E. Real That Cannot Be SW-Computed by Any Ω Number.George Barmpalias & Andrew E. M. Lewis - 2006 - Notre Dame Journal of Formal Logic 47 (2):197-209.
The strong weak truth table (sw) reducibility was suggested by Downey, Hirschfeldt, and LaForte as a measure of relative randomness, alternative to the Solovay reducibility. It also occurs naturally in proofs in classical computability theory as well as in the recent work of Soare, Nabutovsky, and Weinberger on applications of computability to differential geometry. We study the sw-degrees of c.e. reals and construct a c.e. real which has no random c.e. real (i.e., Ω number) sw-above it.

    G. E. Moore's ‘A Defence of Common Sense’ has generated the kind of interest and contrariety which often accompany what is new, provocative, and even important in philosophy. Moore himself reportedly agreed with Wittgenstein's estimate that this was his best article, while C. D. Broad has lamented its very great but largely unfortunate influence. Although the essay inspired Wittgenstein to explore the basis of Moore's claim to know many propositions of common sense to be true, A. J. Ayer judges its (...)

The E-Z Reader Model of Eye-Movement Control in Reading: Comparisons to Other Models.Erik D. Reichle, Keith Rayner & Alexander Pollatsek - 2003 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 26 (4):445-476.
The E-Z Reader model (Reichle et al. 1998; 1999) provides a theoretical framework for understanding how word identification, visual processing, attention, and oculomotor control jointly determine when and where the eyes move during reading. In this article, we first review what is known about eye movements during reading. Then we provide an updated version of the model (E-Z Reader 7) and describe how it accounts for basic findings about eye movement control in reading. We then review several alternative models of (...)

  43. Modelling Trust in Artificial Agents, A First Step Toward the Analysis of E-Trust.Mariarosaria Taddeo - 2010 - Minds and Machines 20 (2):243-257.
This paper provides a new analysis of e - trust , trust occurring in digital contexts, among the artificial agents of a distributed artificial system. The analysis endorses a non-psychological approach and rests on a Kantian regulative ideal of a rational agent, able to choose the best option for itself, given a specific scenario and a goal to achieve. The paper first introduces e-trust describing its relevance for the contemporary society and then presents a new theoretical analysis of this phenomenon. (...)

    E. F. Carritt (1876-1964) was educated at and taught in Oxford University. He made substantial contributions both to aesthetics and to moral philosophy. The focus of this entry is his work in moral philosophy. His most notable works in this field are The Theory of Morals (1928) and Ethical and Political Thinking (1947). Carritt developed views in metaethics and in normative ethics. In meta-ethics he defends a cognitivist, non-naturalist moral realism and was among the first to respond to A. J. (...)

Pressure in Dealing with Requests for Euthanasia or Assisted Suicide. Experiences of General Practitioners.Marike E. De Boer, Marja F. I. A. Depla, Marjolein den Breejen, Pauline Slottje, Bregje D. Onwuteaka-Philipsen & Cees M. P. M. Hertogh - 2019 - Journal of Medical Ethics 45 (7):425-429.
The majority of Dutch physicians feel pressure when dealing with a request for euthanasia or physician-assisted suicide. This study aimed to explore the content of this pressure as experienced by general practitioners. We conducted semistructured in-depth interviews with 15 Dutch GPs, focusing on actual cases. The interviews were transcribed and analysed with use of the framework method. Six categories of pressure GPs experienced in dealing with EAS requests were revealed: emotional blackmail, control and direction by others, doubts about fulfilling the (...)

Therapeutic Misconception: Hope, Trust and Misconception in Paediatric Research.Simon Woods, Lynn E. Hagger & Pauline McCormack - 2014 - Health Care Analysis 22 (1):3-21.
Although the therapeutic misconception (TM) has been well described over a period of approximately 20 years, there has been disagreement about its implications for informed consent to research. In this paper we review some of the history and debate over the ethical implications of TM but also bring a new perspective to those debates. Drawing upon our experience of working in the context of translational research for rare childhood diseases such as Duchenne muscular dystrophy, we consider the ethical and legal (...)

I have two aims in this paper. In §§2-4 I contend that Moore has two arguments (not one) for the view that that ‘good’ denotes a non-natural property not to be identified with the naturalistic properties of science and common sense (or, for that matter, the more exotic properties posited by metaphysicians and theologians). The first argument, the Barren Tautology Argument (or the BTA), is derived, via Sidgwick, from a long tradition of anti-naturalist polemic. But the second argument, the Open (...)
