The amount of information that can be transmitted through a noisy channel is affected by relativistic effects. Under the presence of a fixed noise at the receiver, there appears an asymmetry between “slowly aging” and “fast aging” observers which can be used to have private information transmission. We discuss some models for users inside gravitational wells and in the twin paradox scenario.

El presente trabajo recupera, caracteriza y evalúa el marco antropológico subyacente en la Declaración de los Derechos Humanos de 1948. La noción de interpretación desarrollada en el racionalismo crítico de Karl R. Popper muestra atributos específicos que la distinguen de modo sustancial de la interpretación constitutiva de la experiencia que tanto N. R. Hanson como Th. Kuhn defienden en sus respectivas propuestas. Se muestra que la interpretación del modelo popperiano queda atrapada en una epistemología de corte empirista que la separa de modo radical de toda hermenéutica filosófica. The notion of interpretation developed in the critical rationalism of Karl R. Popper (...) displays specific attributes that substantially distinguish it from the constituent interpretation of experience defended in both N. R. Hanson and T. Kuhn proposals. A continuación, se ofrece un comentario y una edición de la memoria sobre la emigración de Pedro Alcántara Herrán, de acuerdo con cuatro ejes: el contexto en que fue escrita, los debates sobre la migración adelantados entonces en la Nueva Granada, la promoción de la república ideada por Herrán para dirigir hacia ella a colonos norteamericanos o europeos recién llegados a los Estados Unidos y, por último, los presupuestos científicos -etnológicos y geográficos que se pueden distinguir en su propuesta.

La experiencia filosófica de Pablo Posada Varela queda lejos de ser un currículo de filósofo académico. Cuando el verdadero filósofo escribe está movido siempre por motivaciones éticas, para fortalecer el sentido que se busca. Un sentido en contacto permanente con su φρενός, una «inteligencia frenética» al margen de los espasmos del cogito cartesiano y su posterior narcosis. Of all the different types of public buildings, hospitals are the biggest energy consumers. Cooling systems for air conditioning and healthcare uses are particularly energy intensive. Forecasting hospital thermal-cooling demand is a remarkable and innovative method capable of improving the overall energy efficiency of an entire cooling system. Predictive models allow users to forecast the activity of water-cooled generators and adapt power generation to the real demand expected for the day ahead, while avoiding inefficient subcooling. In addition, the maintenance costs (...) related to unnecessary starts and stops and power-generator breakdowns occurring over the long term can be reduced. This study is based on the operations of a real hospital facility and details the steps taken to develop an optimal and efficient model based on a genetic methodology that searches for low-complexity models through feature selection, parameter tuning and parsimonious model selection. The methodology, called GAparsimony, has been tested with neural networks, support vector machines and gradient boosting techniques. Finally, a weighted combination of the three best models was created. The new operational method employed herein can be replicated in similar buildings with similar water-cooled generators. (shrink)

The COVID-19 pandemic has laid bare many of the inadequacies of our capitalist systems, as Žižek extols in Pandemic! COVID-19 Shakes the World. This essay explores how the capabilities approach, as outlined by Amartya Sen and Martha Nussbaum, may be re-examined in the light of this new viral reality by the contributions of Slavoj Žižek and Byung-Chul Han. The capability approach, as it stands, suffers from two missing pieces: that of an acknowledgement of the necessity of negativity as a foil (...) to positivity within the capabilities as articulated by Nussbaum, and the existence of the material root of all capabilities, namely the need to have the capacity to be capable. A “capability for boredom,” and a “zeroth capability” are discussed as solutions, means by which to fill these gaps. Finally, an universal basic income is discussed as a means by which to support the functioning of a “zeroth capability,” the goal being to avoid a descent into bare life during this time of pandemic capitalism. This article explores how historical narratives affect the evaluation of political decisions regarding justice during peace negotiations. Specifically, this study evaluates how different narratives of the Colombian armed conflict relate to the preference for either restorative or retributive justice. Results revealed that a historically accurate narrative that included structural elements correlated with the preference for restorative justice, whereas a schematic narrative that focused on individual greed favoured the preference for retributive justice. These results are explained in terms of the characteristics (...) of expert historical narratives, which include structural elements, such as economic and institutional factors. The presence of these elements in the explanation of conflicts decreases the weight of individual decisions and, in this way, prevent ingroup attributional biases. (shrink)

Brian Cutter objected to the consequence argument due to its dependence on the principle that miracle workers are metaphysically impossible. A miracle worker is someone who has the ability to act in a way such that the laws of nature would be violated. While there is something to the thought that agents like us do not have this ability, Cutter claims that there is no compelling reason to regard miracle workers as metaphysically impossible. However, the paper contends that miracle workers (...) are indeed impossible according to well-known theories concerning the laws of nature. This result highlights the reliance of the consequence argument on a plausible premise, which is widely accepted by proponents of non-Humean views of laws. The paper also provides a way to explain away the intuition that miracle workers are possible, but this has the upshot that a recent, two-dimensional formulation of the consequence argument is unsound. We prove that every weakly square compact cardinal is a strong limit cardinal, and therefore weakly compact. We also study Aronszajn trees with no uncountable finitely splitting subtrees, characterizing them in terms of being Lindelöf with respect to a particular topology. We prove that the class of such trees is consistently non-empty and lies between the classes of Suslin and Aronszajn trees.

I argue that the opening line of the _Phaedrus_ proleptically encapsulates the major themes of the dialogue and that paying attention to the opening line enables us to strengthen the identification of psychagogy as the key unifying thread of the whole dialogue. In particular, I argue that the opening line foreshadows the quarrel between Lysias and Socrates over the practical guidance of Phaedrus’ soul; the prominence of friendship in the philosophical form of life; the pertinence of Socrates’ one-on-one, custom-built speeches, (...) vis-à-vis the later conceptualization of rhetoric; the definition of the soul as a source of never-ending movement; as well as the origin (_arché_) and destiny (_télos_) of human souls, following the lines of the Palinode. El artículo propone la tesis según la cual De sobremesa de José Asunción Silva da cuenta del influjo novelador del arte tal y como se encarna en una existencia estética que pretende llevarse dentro del contexto filosófico de la muerte de Dios, esto es, del devenir fabulador del mundo. Para ello, se hace un seguimiento del modo como la novela problematiza la relación entre la vida del artista y la obra de arte, lo cual permite además aventurar una interpretación del (...) suicidio de Silva en términos de una resolución trágica de aquella metamorfosis artística de la realidad. Cuatro instancias de análisis se transitan en dicho seguimiento: i) el espacio novelesco como alternativa al pacto y al espacio autobiográficos, ii) la marginalidad del arte en la sociedad burguesa como manifestación sociohistórica del influjo novelador, iii) la estructura formal de la novela como el redoblamiento de la tendencia estética de la existencia y iv) el absoluto metafísico como la nada artística con potencialidades cómicas. Desde hace algunas décadas, la pregunta por la vida buena ha ganado relevancia en el discurso filosófico universitario. Un fenómeno llamativo en este contexto es la publicación de obras que, concebidas en el seno mismo de la academia, evitan ceñirse al formato de escritura científica convencional y en cambio integran estrategias literarias en su discurrir argumentativo. Ejemplos paradigmáticos de este fenómeno son los títulos El arte de vivir (The Art of Living) de Alexander Nehamas (1998); La vida plena (Das vollkommene (...) Leben) de Michael Hampe (2009) y La dignidad humana: Una manera de vivir (Eine Art zu Leben: Über die Vielfalt menschlicher Würde) de Peter Bieri (2013), obras que hasta ahora han pasado prácticamente inadvertidas en el ámbito hispanoparlante. El artículo pretende subsanar este vacío en la recepción mediante un seguimiento de la articulación entre las concepciones éticas expuestas en cada uno de los tres casos y el particular modo de exposición elegido, así como mediante un seguimiento de la ascendencia socrática a la que apelan declarada o tácitamente. Además, defenderá la tesis de que el recurso a elementos literarios es una manera de enfrentar, con un énfasis en la voz autoral, la neutralidad moderna de la filosofía ante la pregunta por cómo vivir. El siguiente pasaje del Sofista ilustra el asunto de este ensayo: "¿O ocaso inadvertidamente hemos caído, por Zeus, en la ciencia de los hombres libres, y, buscando al sofista, corremos el riesgo de haber encontrado primero al filósofo?" (253c5-10). Que el extranjero de Elea se tope sorpresivamente con el filósofo en una conversación que pretende ofrecer una definición del sofista, insinúa lo poco inadvertida que resultaba para Platón la cercanía entre el "hombre libre" y su imitador. En el Sofista, el (...) interés platónico se centra en poner de manifiesto esta cercanía y a la vez definir sus límites haciendo que el primero cace al segundo. El presente artículo explora el sentido de la caza atendiendo a las singularidades de 1) el procedimiento formal que sigue; 2) la pregunta que la gula; 3) la cualidad de espíritu que demanda; 4) las palabras con que los interlocutores la nombran; y 5) la "noble" presa que termina encontrando. El artículo hace un recorrido a través de Así habló Zaratustra explorando las peculiaridades de su escritura. Se intenta responder específicamente a la pregunta por el modo como se entretejen el contenido doctrinal -la enseñanza de Zaratustra- y la manera elegida por Nietzsche para comunicarlo -la sentencia-. Para ello se toma como punto de partida el discurso Del leer y el escribir. Este discurso, además de problematizar explícitamente la comunicación con el lector. Remite de modo implícito al momento en el (...) que tal comunicación entra en crisis, esto es, al momento de la enseñanza de la doctrina del eterno retorno. La atención al punto crítico muestra que para dar cuenta de la peculiar configuración del decir zaratustriano es necesario postular una noción alternativa a la de "discurso semipoético". El artículo intenta corresponder a tal necesidad poniendo de relieve él concepto de sentencia y mostrando cómo las condiciones para su audición no son ajenas al lugar pensado por Nietzsche para su obra. El artículo intenta hacer una reflexión filosófica sobre la depresión, desde la melancolía. Para ello, incursiona etimológica, paremiológica, histórica y conceptualmente en dicho concepto; de estas incursiones, sobresale una tesis: Frente a la melancolía, cabe la afirmación de la vida, desde el conatus spinozista y la tranquilidad del ánimo senequiano.

El artículo intenta mostrar cómo la mística del Maestro Eckhart es la sumersión en la nada silente de Dios como plenitud vacía y vacío pleno, en el desierto de la abundancia divina del no ser del ser de Dios, gracias al cumplimiento de la voluntad divina como ascenso que la cumple sin cumplirla. Para ello, analiza la vida, la obra y el pensamiento del Maestro con base en sus textos El libro del consuelo divino, El fruto de la nada, Vida (...) eterna y conocimiento divino, Ecos de la Edad Media. Termina con un epílogo en el que se analiza el grano de mostaza en donde se aclara lo del desierto abundante de la nada silente de Dios como el de muchos nombres sin nombre. (shrink)

This article examines the controversy that has arisen in the last decade about Michel Foucault’s supposed “fascination” with neoliberalism, especially around the contributions of Daniel Zamora and Michael C. Behrent. Their theses are contrasted with Foucauldian writings and reconsidered from a different approach to the historical, political and intellectual context of the French 1970s, which, in our opinion, shows a lack of complexity in the studies of those authors. Thus, this paper tries to establish that the limitations of Michel Foucault’s (...) approach to neoliberalism do not respond to any sort of neoliberal “sympathies”, but to another kind of problems-mainly analytical-. This article aims to reconstruct the intellectual, political and biographical connection between Michel Foucault and the group known as the "new philosophers". By focusing not only on their philosophical project, but also on the way in which they try to situate themselves in the new French intellectual field of the second half of the 1970s - deeply influenced by the decline of the political cycle of 1968 - we attempt to describe the boundaries of two ways of conceiving theoretical work (...) and of understanding the present that are radically different but, nevertheless, in some respects coincident. This analysis of the relationship between Foucault and the new philosophers - mainly developed around the figures of Bernard Henri-Lévy and André Glucksmann - aims, thus, to decipher not only some aspects of their philosophical proposal, but also of a particularly turbulent time crucial to understand the following decades. Sprache, Einstellung und Rationalität stellen zentrale Begriffe eines komplexen Zusammenhangs dar, der in seiner philosophischen Tragweite noch viel zu wenig verstanden wird. In zweierlei Hinsicht trägt die vorliegende Arbeit dazu bei, dieses Desiderat zu beseitigen: Im ersten Teil wird dafür argumentiert, daß Ansätze, die glaubhaft machen wollen, daß bei der Erklärung von Intentionalität auf Rationalitätsannahmen zu verzichten sei, schon deshalb fehlerhaft sind, weil es bei Einstellungs-Zuschreibungen nicht auf die Individuierung geistiger Zustände ankommt. Vielmehr besagt die zentrale Überlegung des zweiten Teils, (...) daß dasjenige, was gemeinhin als die kognitive Signifikanz von Einstellungs-Äußerungen bezeichnet wird, am einfachsten durch eine ergänzende Theorie der pragmatischen Kontext-Bedingungen zu erfassen ist. Hier ist dann auch der Ort, an dem der im Titel gestiftete Zusammenhang am deutlichsten zutage tritt. (shrink)
