    Critical Reflections on Christic Visions.Philip H. Wiebe - 2000 - Journal of Consciousness Studies 7 (11-12):11-12.
This paper discusses Christic visions as a significant kind of religious experience requiring explanation. It is based upon research published in ‘Visions of Jesus: Direct Encounters for the New Testament to Today’ , in which I draw on information obtained from 30 living visionaries, using 21 categories to classify their experiences, including 15 phenomenological ones. Proposed explanations can be plausibly classified as falling into three broad categories: supernaturalistic, mentalistic and neurophysiological. I argue that no single explanation in any of these (...)

    Anti‐Sexist/Anti‐Racist Education: A Possible Dilemma.Philip H. Walkling & Chris Brannigan - 1986 - Journal of Moral Education 15 (1):16-25.
Abstract This paper sketches a mood of indecision which can affect persons of goodwill in a multiethnic educational context when confronted by apparently conflicting demands for an education which satisfies the requirement for equal opportunities for women and the due recognition of the special status accorded to the moral education of women in some cultures. It concludes that the dilemma arises from a mistaken attribution of rights to entities other than individuals, and urges teachers to adopt a positive attitude towards (...)

Safe at Any Scale? Food Scares, Food Regulation, and Scaled Alternatives.Laura B. DeLind & Philip H. Howard - 2008 - Agriculture and Human Values 25 (3):301-317.
The 2006 outbreak of E. coli O157:H7, traced to bagged spinach from California, illustrates a number of contradictions. The solutions sought by many politicians and popular food analysts have been to create a centralized federal agency and a uniform set of production standards modeled after those of the animal industry. Such an approach would disproportionately harm smaller-scale producers, whose operations were not responsible for the epidemic, as well as reduce the agroecological diversity that is essential for maintaining healthy human beings (...)

    Meta-Relation and Ontology Closure in Conceptual Structure Theory.Philip H. P. Nguyen, Ken Kaneiwa, Dan R. Corbett & Minh-Quang Nguyen - 2009 - Artificial Intelligence and Law 17 (4):291-320.
This paper presents an enhanced ontology formalization, combining previous work in Conceptual Structure Theory and Order-Sorted Logic. Most existing ontology formalisms place greater importance on concept types, but in this paper we focus on relation types, which are in essence predicates on concept types. We formalize the notion of ‘predicate of predicates’ as meta-relation type and introduce the new hierarchy of meta-relation types as part of the ontology definition. The new notion of closure of a relation or meta-relation type is (...)

  13. Corporate Cooptation of Organic and Fair Trade Standards.Daniel Jaffee & Philip H. Howard - 2010 - Agriculture and Human Values 27 (4):387-399.
Recent years have seen a substantial increase in alternative agrifood initiatives that attempt to use the market to curtail the negative social and environmental effects of production and trade in a globalized food system. These alternatives pose a challenge to capital accumulation and the externalization of environmental costs by large agribusiness, trading and retail firms. Yet the success of these alternatives also makes them an inviting target for corporate participation. This article examines these dynamics through a case study of the (...)

Substance Abuse During Pregnancy: Clinical and Public Health Approaches.Philip H. Jos, Martin Perlmutter & Mary Faith Marshall - 2003 - Journal of Law, Medicine and Ethics 31 (3):340-350.
The treatment of pregnant women addicted to drugs provides an especially important and illustrative example of how political and popular demands can successfully challenge professional ethical norms associated with clinical medicine — norms such as confidentiality, patient autonomy, and the right to consent to and to refuse treatment. One increasingly popular policy approach is to limit patient autonomy by coercing women in an attempt to change their behavior, either by involuntary civil commitment or by imprisoning them for drug abuse or (...)

    A Reexamination of the Internal Auditors' Code of Ethics.Philip H. Siegel, John O'Shaughnessy & John T. Rigsby - 1995 - Journal of Business Ethics 14 (11):949 - 957.
This study empirically examined the views of Certified Internal Auditors (CIAs) concerning the role of Code of Ethics for members of the Institute of Internal Auditors. It is a continuation of an earlier study which examined the usefulness of the Code to CIAs. Among the questions asked were what is the primary reason for the Code of Ethics, how useful is it, have you used it, should more enforcement actions be taken against members who violate the Code, and what are (...)

The Charleston Policy on Cocaine Use During Pregnancy: A Cautionary Tale.Philip H. Jos, Mary Faith Marshall & Martin Perlmutter - 1995 - Journal of Law, Medicine and Ethics 23 (2):120-128.
The conflict between pregnant women freely using cocaine and the well-being of fetuses presents a difficult social problem. Since 1985, at least 200 women, in thirty states, have been criminally prosecuted for using illicit drugs or alcohol during pregnancy. Such policies enjoy considerable public and political support. Nonetheless, treatment programs that include referral to law enforcement officials raise serious ethical and legal issues for hospitals and health care providers. In this paper, we assess the development of one medical university's controversial (...)

Who’s the Fairest of Them All? The Fractured Landscape of U.S. Fair Trade Certification.Daniel Jaffee & Philip H. Howard - 2016 - Agriculture and Human Values 33 (4):813-826.
In recent years, consumers in the United States have been confronted by no fewer than four competing fair-trade labels, each grounded in a separate certification system and widely differing standards. This fracturing is partly a response to the recent split by the U.S. certifier Fair Trade USA from the international fair trade system, but also illustrates longstanding divisions within the fair trade movement. This article explores the dynamics of competition among nonstate standards through content analyses of fair trade standards documents (...)
