The discipline area of physical education has historically struggled for legitimacy, sometimes being seen as a non-serious pursuit in educational terms compared to other subjects within the school curriculum. This book represents the first attempt in nearly 30 years to offer a coherent philosophical defence and conceptualisation of physical education and sport as subjects of educational value, and to provide a philosophically sound justification for their inclusion in the curriculum. This article will derive a definition and account of the physically educated person, through an examination of the philosophy of Andrew Reid, Richard Peters and Aristotle. Initially, Reid’s interpretation of Peters’ views about the educational significance of practical knowledge (and physical education) will be considered. While it will be acknowledged that Peters was rather disparaging about the educational merit of some practical activities in Ethics and Education, it will be argued that he elsewhere suggests that such practical (...) activities could be educationally worthwhile in and of themselves. In Education and the educated man he specified that practical activities should be regarded as educationally important if they are either transformed by theoretical understanding and/or pursued to the point of excellence. In suggesting that education involves the cultivation of both theoretical and practical human excellences it is argued that Peters’ philosophy of education begins to take on a more Aristotelian bent. After exploring Aristotle’s notion of virtue (human excellence) and his discussion of physical training in The politics, it is claimed that physical education activities might be most worthwhile when they extend the moral habits and/or modes of thought of pupils, towards excellence. It is concluded that physically educated persons should be defined as those who have learned to arrange their lives in such a way that the physical activities they freely engage in make a distinctive contribution to their long-term flourishing. The aim of this article is to offer a view of the current status of women in medical physics and biomedical engineering, while focusing on solutions towards gender balance and providing examples of current activities carried out at national and international levels. The International Union of Physical and Engineering Scientists in Medicine is committed to advancing women in science and health and has several initiatives overseen by the Women in Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering Task Group. Some of the (...) main strategies proposed by the Task Group to attain gender balance are: (a) identify and promote female role models that achieve successful work-life balance, (b) establish programs to develop female leaders, (c) create opportunities for females to increase the international visibility within the scientific community, and (d) establish archives and databases of women in STEM. This article is concerned with the educational value of raising the human body at school. Drawing inspiration from the work of Giorgio Agamben, I develop a new perspective that explores the possibility of taking the concept of physical education in a literal sense. This is to say that the specific educational content of physical education (in contradistinction to organized sporting life outside school) resides in its concentration on the physical ?as such?. This is not an (...) obvious path to explore, because defenders of physical education as a rule have to compete against the (dualist) prejudice that this discipline is merely an instrument to train the body or to keep it fit, and that it therefore should not be considered as a serious endeavour. Therefore, more often than not, apologists try to justify the relevance of physical education on the very ground that it is a practice that is concerned with something ?beyond? the merely physical that is at stake in movement activity. I argue, however, that this line of thought excludes the possibility of conceiving an alternative approach that relates the concentration on ?entirely physical? activities (as opposed to ?merely physical? activities) to an experience of potentiality. I develop this idea on the basis of an analysis of repetitive, rhythmical and collective body-exercise (e.g. running in a group or basic callisthenics). (shrink)

D'après Confucius, il y a six « arts libéraux » qui sont : la musique, le cérémonial, l'arithmétique, la calligraphie, l'escrime et « l'art de conduire un char ». Donc pas de gymnastique encore. L'escrime donne satisfaction à l'instinct combatif, mais il ne paraît pas que cet instinct ait suffi à la propager en Extrême-Orient. À remarquer que la première escrime naturelle n'a pu être celle du poing qui demande une contrainte et un assouplissement artificiels préalables. Il était plus naturel (...) à l'homme primitif de s'emparer d'un bâton ou même de lutter simplement corps à corps ou encore de chercher à frapper par le jet d'une pierre. Les escrimes d'Extrême-Orient sont demeurées des spectacles et n'ont donné naissance à aucune institution pédagogique sauf -- plus tard, au Japon -- le jiu-jitsu. (shrink)

Face aux attitudes passives et violentes de certains jeunes scolarisés, les enseignants expriment de façon permanente la volonté de " rendre les élèves autonomes ". Mais la démarche qui mène à cet objectif est parsemée de pièges. Loin de présupposés non-directifs, cet ouvrage cherche à recenser et à présenter de façon simple l'ensemble des modèles théoriques capables de faire comprendre les processus de modifications d'attitudes de l'élève dans la classe. D'abord vis-à-vis des contenus d'apprentissage, puis vis-à-vis des personnes (le professeur, (...) les autres élèves). Chacun de ces modèles est illustré par des exemples de mises en œuvre en éducation physique. Afin de rendre cohérente l'action du professeur en direction de ces " deux autonomies " (par rapport aux contenus et aux, personnes), la troisième partie de l'ouvrage propose une approche globale qui interprète les conduites observées chez les élèves selon différents niveaux d'intégration des règles dans la situation d'enseignement. Un ensemble de renouvellements paradigmatiques profonds ont marqué le champ académique depuis une vingtaine d'années. Comment les Sciences du sport ont-elles fait face à ces innovations épistémologiques? Les ont-elles prises en compte ou négligées? Suivant quelles modalités? Peut-on distinguer des appropriations qui seraient, suivant les cas, rhétoriques, métaphoriques, abusives, fécondes voire créatives? La mise en oeuvre des programmes innovants par les STAPS enrichit-elle en retour les espaces académiques qui les avaient originellement produits? Comment les traditions théoriques réagissent-elles à l'introduction des (...) points de vue novateurs? Suivant quelles voies se réalise la cohabitation entre traditions et innovations? Epistémologues et chercheurs, au moyen d'études de cas et de mises en perspectives transversales, croisent leurs regards pour éclairer ces problématiques complémentaires. Sartre pädagogisch lesen, dies ist bislang versäumt worden. Zu entdecken ist in seinem Denken eine deutliche Nähe zum Bildungsbegriff des frühen Nietzsche und damit auch eine Akzentuierung der Selbstverantwortlichkeit des Subjekts gegenüber allen situativen Einschränkungen seiner Freiheit. In Zeiten einer drohenden Selbstabdankung des Subjekts ist die Anknüpfung an Sartres Verständnis der Authentizität hilfreich für das Bemühen um die Neuformulierung eines tragfähigen Bildungsbegriffs. Die Sportpädagogik gewinnt über Sartres Analysen des Körpers eine bis heute unerschlossene phänomenologische Perspektive auf ihre anthropologischen Grundlagen.
