A study of the conflict between philosophy and poetry in four Platonic dialogues: the Ion, the Symposium, the Republic, and the Sophist.

Psiche sets up a close-knit comparison between the psychology of Plato's Republic and Freud's psychoanalysis. Convergences and divergences are discussed in relation both to the Platonic conception of the oneiric emergence of repressed desires that prefigures the main path of Freud's subconscious, to the analysis of the psychopathologies related to these theoretical formulations and to the two diagnostic and therapeutic approaches adopted. Another crucial theme is the Platonic eros - the examination of which is also extended to the Symposium and (...) Phaedrus - taken up explicitly by Freud in relation to the concept of libido. Finally, the author also addresses the two themes - of, inter alia, a metapsychological nature - inherent to the moral dimension. -/- Psiche istituisce un confronto ravvicinato tra la psicologia della "Repubblica" di Platone e la psicoanalisi di Freud. Convergenze e divergenze vengono discusse in relazione sia alla concezione platonica dell'emersione onirica dei desideri repressi, che prefigura la via regia per l'inconscio di Freud, sia all'analisi delle psicopatologie correlate a tali impostazioni teoriche, sia ai due approcci diagnostici e terapeutici adottati. Altro tema cruciale è l'eros platonico - la cui disamina viene estesa anche al "Simposio" e al "Fedro" - ripreso esplicitamente da Freud in relazione al concetto di libido. L'autore affronta, infine, le due tematizzazioni, di natura metapsicologica e non solo, inerenti alla dimensione morale. (shrink)

In questa relazione suggerisco di considerare almeno la possibilità che nel Simposio Platone ci offre non una mera spiegazione della natura dell’amore, ma una spiegazione filosofica della natura del linguaggio (sull’amore). Nel Simposio Eros è una maschera di Socrate e Socrate una maschera del linguaggio. La storia di Diotima sulla nascita di Eros, figlio di Poros e Penia conferma questo punto: il linguaggio, come l’amore, non può possedere il suo oggetto come qualcosa di presente ma solo sempre (...) in una fragile bilancia tra presenza e assenza, tra oblio e memoria, tra conoscenza e ignoranza. Il linguaggio, come l’amore, è il demone della comunicazione. In questa relazione presento qualche prova, tratta dal dialogo, atta a supportare tale interpretazione. (shrink)

En este trabajo se propone una aproximación al uso filosófico del dios griego Dioniso en la obra de Platón, con especial referencia a la vertiente pedagógicopolítica del pensamiento platónico en la República y, sobre todo, en las Leyes. se discuten brevemente los trabajos anteriores que han tratado esta cuestión, incluidos los dos más recientes que versan sobre las Leyes y sobre la faceta filosófica de Dioniso, al hilo de una propuesta de lectura de las presencias y ausencias de Dioniso en (...) Platón a través de tres dimensiones −el simposio, los misterios y la poesía con fines educativos− que convergen en la finalidad política reformista del filósofo ateniense. (shrink)

Diotima’s speech in the Symposium, which defines the erotic function as an act of procreation in the beautiful, is generally regarded as the most faithful account of the philosopher’s views on the nature of love. While this definition has received much attention from commentators, few studies pay attention to the literal aspect that is veiled behind the rhetorical effect Plato seeks to install. This neglect is even more striking given that the theory of reproduction that underlies the metaphor contains several (...) ambiguities that are unfamiliar to contemporary biology. In the present paper I propose to read Diotima’s argumentation by focusing on the biological conception of procreation that gives structure to the metaphor. I will focus my analysis on the statement that “the sexual union (synousía) between man and woman is a childbirth (tókos).” I will argue that this sentence not only condenses the general sense of the metaphor of intellectual procreation, but also hints at the embryological conception that underlies the metaphor, and that explains to some extent the ambiguity of the Platonic lexicon considering what the philosopher states in Timaeus 91c. I will also argue that the Symposium’s discourse on conception and childbirth, by effacing the female experience, contributes to the tradition of obliteration of the political transcendence of motherhood that prevails in the civic discourses of the time, and therefore to the reinforcement of the exclusion of women from citizenship and from the political sphere in general. En el manuscrito de referencia de las Leyes, el Parisinus Graecus 1807 del siglo IX d.C., este diálogo se encuentra entre el Minos y el Epinomis. Si en el Minos el discípulo hace referencia a la diversidad de ritos y costumbres observables en los diferentes pueblos, en el Epinomis se hace énfasis en la unidad de la ley. La regulación del simposio, del acceso a los fármacos, a las bebidas embriagantes y a los medicamentos, es un tema fundamental en (...) las Leyes, lo que es visible por la composición misma del diálogo, pues es en los primeros libros donde se trata esta temática. El arte de regular la vida en comunidad se muestra como una técnica perfectible a través del diálogo. Las bebidas en común pueden ser benéficas, dice el anónimo extranjero Ateniense, pues el vino anima a los ciudadanos a cantar y a través de la confrontación con el placer los ciudadanos ejercitan la templanza. Como el consumo de vino también puede producir excesos y desmesuras debe regularse su consumo. El Ateniense propone un límite mínimo de edad para beber vino que es de 18 años (Leyes 2.666a-e). La postura del extranjero Ateniense, en cuanto al tema de la regulación de los fármacos, es un mensaje que podríamos catalogar como “antiprohibicionista”, si bien no en el sentido contemporáneo, individualista y liberal, sí en el sentido en que no se propone prohibir a los ciudadanos los fármacos de manera absoluta: se propone permitirlos, pero bajo una estricta regulación legal y comunitaria. A study of the topography of Delphi in late antiquity in concert with a study of the pottery, chiefly discovered during recent excavations, casts decisive light on a period in the sites history that is little known and largely ighored in the bibliography. Delphi thus appears as provincial town of moderate size, but more extensive than in previous periods, especially towards the west. The sacred area was transformed into an urban area and the most imposing buildings, public and private, were (...) regrouped around the sanctuary enclosure. The stratigraphie data and the finds, both ceramic and other, indicate a life that was rather calm and comfortable until the last quarter of the 6th c, then an interruption followed by a resumption of activities until the first quarter of the 7th c, when the town was abandoned by its inhabiants. Several types of pottery were made on the spot, evidenced by the discovery of a potter's kiln, refuse dumps, moulds and wasters. (shrink)

Les lampes corinthiennes des Ier-IIIe s. apr. J.-C. découvertes à Delphes proviennent essentiellement des nécropoles et de quelques contextes urbains fouillés systématiquement dans les années 1990. Elles constituent une preuve directe des rapports entre Delphes et la capitale de l’Achaïe, Corinthe, rapports qui n’ont pas eu de suite après le IIIe s. Ces lampes portent toutes les caractéristiques techniques du type (forme, mode de fabrication, pâte) et se distinguent par une certaine variété dans le décor des médaillons, inspiré par la (...) mythologie ou par la vie quotidienne. Quatorze noms de potiers ont été recensés sur les bases conservées. Plus d’un siècle après une très brève publication par Perdrizet et quarante ans après les articles fondamentaux sur les lampes corinthiennes de Bruneau, l’approche de ce corpus sous un prisme nouveau nous offre l’occasion de reprendre la discussion sur la morphologie, sur les ateliers et surtout sur les villes où ce type de lampes était produit ; elle nous permet aussi une nouvelle interprétation du décor de plusieurs de ces lampes.
