Commentary: Maintaining the somatic/germ-line distinction: Some ethical drawbacks.Ray Moseley - 1991 - Journal of Medicine and Philosophy 16 (6):641-647.
Determinations of the ethical acceptability of genetic therapy have relied on several distinctions in attempts to separate ethically acceptable genetic therapy from those possible therapies that could lead to genetic modifications of future human beings. One distinction that has been proposed is that genetic modifications of human somatic cells is ethically acceptable but that Germ-Line genetics modifications would be ethically objectionable. This paper examines several serious difficulties which call into question the ethical relevance of a somatic/Germ-Line distinction. Keywords: double effect, (...)

    Ethical issues arising from human genetics.A. Arnold & R. Moseley - 1976 - Journal of Medical Ethics 2 (1):12-17.
Advances in understanding genetic disorders have been rapid in the last few years and with them the need and desire for genetic counselling have grown. Almost simultaneously, particularly in the USA, several large screening programmes have been initiated to screen large numbers of people who may be carriers of such deleterious genes as those of Tay-Sachs disease and sickle cell anaemia. The authors of this paper, clinical medical students at University College Hospital, London, spent some time studying the ethical issues (...)

Advance directives in medicine.Chris Hackler, Ray Moseley & Dorothy E. Vawter (eds.) - 1989 - New York: Praeger.
Modern medicine has put a new twist on one of our most fundamental values: self-determination. Although advance directives may be used to request treatment, this volume limits its focus to their more common function--the refusal of treatment. Timely and comprehensive, it provides a stimulating overview of this relevant topic, addressing such questions as: What are the individual and societal benefits of advance directives? Does an advance directive tamper with the sanctity of life? Will normalizing directives have an adverse effect on (...)

    MOZART'S HARLEQUINADE Musical Improvisation alla commedia dell'arte.Roger Moseley - 2011 - Common Knowledge 17 (2):335-347.
This article details the motives, processes, and historical context behind an improvised performance of a commedia dell'arte-style pantomime originally devised by Mozart and his friends during the Viennese Carnival season of 1783. The performers' efforts to reconstruct and interpret the fragmentary musical and literary materials that survive are framed by a consideration of the marginal position that musical improvisation occupies in the history of eighteenth-century music, and alternative historiographical and ethnographical methods are explored for the insights they can offer into (...)

    Trousers and Tiaras: Audrey Hepburn, A Woman's Star.Rachel Moseley - 2002 - Feminist Review 71 (1):37-51.
Audrey Hepburn is one of cinema's most stylish and enduring icons, and has embodied an ideal of femininity for generations of women. Using textual analysis, archival research and audience accounts of ‘Doing the Hepburn Look’, I argue that Audrey Hepburn, as a star clearly addressing a female audience, offered a flexible image which was enabling to young women through dress in relation to exigencies of gender, class and national identity. The paper draws on research conducted as part of a larger (...)

The loneliness of me: The assumption of social disinterest and its worrying consequences in autism.Rachel Louise Moseley & Jie Sui - 2019 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 42.
We share Jaswal & Akhtar's concerns about the unintended repercussions of assumed social disinterest in autism. We expand consideration of these consequences with discussion of the literature and our own work on loneliness, mental ill-health, and self-representation, which is a cornerstone to social and emotional health. Further study is needed with expansive, mixed methodologies and involvement of the autistic community.

Between text and performance symposium on improvisation and originalism.Jeffrey M. Perl, Philip Gossett, Robert Levin, Jeffrey Kallberg, Steven E. Jones, Martin Puchner, Tiffany Stern, Mark Franko & Roger Moseley - 2011 - Common Knowledge 17 (2):221-230.
This essay introduces a Common Knowledge symposium on the relationship between texts (for instance, musical scores or dramatic scripts) and performance in the arts by drawing out its implications for the interpretation of publicly consequential texts (such as constitutions, legal statutes, and canon law). Arguing that judges and clerics could learn much from studying the work of Philip Gossett and other practitioners of textual criticism in the arts, the essay suggests that a wider array of choices exists for legal interpretation (...)
