An increasing amount of data is now available from public and private sources. Furthermore, the types, formats, and number of sources of data are also increasing. Techniques for extracting, storing, processing, and analyzing such data have been developed in the last few years for managing this bewildering variety based on a structure called a knowledge graph. Industry has devoted a great deal of effort to the development of knowledge graphs, and knowledge graphs are now critical to the functions of intelligent (...) virtual assistants such as Siri, Alexa, and Google Assistant. The goal of the Ontology Summit 2020 was to understand not only what knowledge graphs are but also where they originated, why they are so popular, the current issues, and their future prospects. The summit sessions examined many examples of knowledge graphs and surveyed the relevant standards that exist and are in development for knowledge graphs. The purpose of this Communiqué is to summarize our understanding from the Summit in order to foster research and development of knowledge graphs. (shrink)
The Utica Shale is one of the major source rocks in Ohio, and it extends across much of the eastern United States. Its organic richness, high content of calcite, and development of extensive organic porosity make it a perfect unconventional play, and it has gained the attention of the oil and gas industry. The primary target zone in the Utica Play includes the Utica Formation, Point Pleasant Formation, and Trenton Formation intervals. We attempt to identify the sweet spots within the (...) Point Pleasant interval using 3D seismic data, available well data, and other relevant data. This has been done by way of organic richness and brittleness estimation in the rock intervals. The organic richness is determined by weight % of total organic carbon content, which is derived by transforming the inverted density volume. Core-log petrophysical modeling provides the necessary relationship for doing so. The brittleness is derived using rock-physics parameters such as the Young’s modulus and Poisson’s ratio. Deterministic simultaneous inversion along with a neural network approach are followed to compute the rock-physics parameters and density using seismic data. The correlation of sweet spots identified based on the seismic data with the available production data emphasizes the significance of integration of seismic data with all other relevant data. The Utica Formation in eastern Ohio possesses all the prerequisites for being a successful unconventional play. Attempts at seismic reservoir characterization of the Utica Formation have been discussed in part 1, in which, after providing the geologic background of the area of study, the preconditioning of prestack seismic data, well-log correlation, and building of robust low-frequency models for prestack simultaneous impedance inversion were explained. All these efforts were aimed at identification of sweet spots in the Utica Formation in terms of (...) organic richness as well as brittleness. We elaborate on some aspects of that exercise, such as the challenges we faced in the determination of the total organic carbon volume and computation of brittleness indices based on mineralogical and geomechanical considerations. The prediction of TOC in the Utica play using a methodology, in which limited seismic as well as well-log data are available, is demonstrated first. Thereafter, knowing the nonexistence of the universally accepted indicator of brittleness, mechanical along with mineralogical attempts to extract the brittleness information for the Utica play are discussed. Although an attempt is made to determine brittleness from mechanical rock-physics parameters derived from seismic data, the available X-ray diffraction data and regional petrophysical modeling make it possible to determine the brittleness index based on mineralogical data and thereafter be derived from seismic data. The Devonian Duvernay Formation in northwest central Alberta, Canada, has become a hot play in the past few years due to its richness in liquid and gaseous hydrocarbon resources. The oil and gas generation in this shale formation made it the source rock for many oil and gas fields in its vicinity. We attempt to showcase the characterization of Duvernay Formation using 3D multicomponent seismic data and integrating it with the available well log and other relevant data. This has been (...) done by deriving rock-physics parameters through deterministic simultaneous and joint impedance inversion, with appropriate quantitative interpretation. In particular, we determine the brittleness of the Duvernay interval, which helps us determine the sweet spots therein. The scope of this characterization exercise was extended to explore the induced seismicity observed in the area that is perceived to be associated with hydraulic fracture stimulation of the Duvernay. This has been a cause of media coverage lately. We attempt to integrate our results with the induced seismicity data available in the public domain and elaborate on our learning experience gained so far. (shrink)
The phenomenon of dreamless sleep and its philosophical consequences, particularly deep sleep's relevance to such issues as Self, Consciousness, Personal Identity, Unity of Subject, and Disembodied Life, are explored through a discussion, in varying detail, of certain noted doctrines and views--for example of Advaita Vedānta, Hegel, and H. D. Lewis. Finally, with a cue from Leibniz and McTaggart, the suggestion is made that at no stage during sleep is the self without some perceptions, however indeterminate. Support for this hypothesis is (...) claimed from the current psychoanalytic opinion that mental activity does not cease during any part of sleep and that human beings continue to dream even in the so-called dreamless state. Shale resource plays are associated with low permeability; hence, hydraulic fracturing is required for their stimulation and production. Even though considerable nonuniqueness exists in identifying favorable zones for hydraulic fracturing, geophysicists seem to be avid followers of low-Poisson’s ratio and high-Young’s modulus brittleness criteria, proposed a decade ago. We highlight the misinterpretation that one may run into in following such a criterion for any shale play and develop a new attribute that makes use of strain energy density and fracture toughness. (...) Although the former controls fracture initiation, the propagation of fractures is governed by the latter. Because hydraulic fracturing comprises both these properties, it is firmly believed that the new proposed attribute could be used to highlight the favorable intervals for fracturing. Core data, well log curves, along with mud logs have been used to authenticate the proposed attribute. Finally, computation of the new attributes is implemented on the seismic data with encouraging results. (shrink)

Each annual Ontology Summit initiative makes a statement appropriate to each Summits theme as part of our general advocacy designed to bring ontology science and engineering into the mainstream. The theme this year is "Towards an Open Ontology Repository". This communiqué represents the joint position of those who were engaged in the year's summit discourse on an Open Ontology Repository (OOR) and of those who endorse below. In this discussion, we have agreed that an "ontology repository is a facility where (...) ontologies and related information artifacts can be stored, retrieved and managed." -/- We believe in the promise of semantic technologies based on logic, databases and the Semantic Web, a Web of exposed data and of interpretations of that data (i.e., of semantics), using common standards. Such technologies enable distinguishable, computable, reusable, and sharable meaning of Web and other artifacts, including data, documents, and services. We also believe that making that vision a reality requires additional supporting resources and these resources should be open, extensible, and provide common services over the ontologies. (shrink)
: Classical Sāmkhya, as represented by Īśvarakrsna's Sāmkhya-kārikā, is well known for its attempt to prove not only the reality but the plurality of selves (purusa-bahutva). The Sāmkhya argument, since it proceeds from the reality of the manyness of the bodies as its basic premise, approximates, even if not in every detail, the 'argument from analogy' in its traditional form (which the essay tries to explicate). One distinguished modern interpreter, K. C. Bhattacharyya, however, not satisfied with this account, attempts to (...) interpret and expound Sāmkhya pluralism in terms of a radically different strategy consisting of showing that the self is known in buddhi in its pure asmita function as an infinite I and so as necessarily involving all Is or selves. This solution, which in the process offers reflections on such issues as infinity, universals, the role of 'I', the individuality (of self ), et cetera, is examined and criticized at length with respect to some of its basic assumptions, with a brief focus on the idea of 'self-consciousness', which according to some (Western) philosophers presupposes 'other'-consciousness and which in certain respects seems to inform Bhattacharyya's thoughts on the main issue. Advances in machine learning and the development of very large knowledge graphs have accompanied a proliferation of ontologies of many types and for many purposes. These ontologies are commonly developed independently, and as a result, it can be difficult to communicate about and between them. To address this difficulty of communication, ontologies and the communities they serve must agree on how their respective terminologies and formalizations relate to each other. The process of coming into accord and agreement is called “harmonization.” (...) The Ontology Summit 2021 examined the overall landscape of ontologies, the many kinds of ontology generation and harmonization, as well as the sustainability of ontologies. The Communiqué synthesizes and summarizes the findings of the summit as well as earlier summits on related issues. One of the major impediments to harmonization is the relatively poor quality of natural language definitions in many ontologies. The summit surveyed the state of the art in natural language definition development, based on lexicographic principles, as well as examples of ongoing projects that are explicitly dealing with harmonization and sustainability. In this paper, we propose an Internet of Things to enhancing the experience of personal gardening as a method of therapy for mental-health patients, given a belief in its role in a person’s mood and general positivity, The proposed prototype continuously senses and monitors the state of an indoor plant through different sensors. The user is notified of the plant’s needs for water, sunlight, etc., through generated notifications from channels over cloud in-real time. This bold and wide-ranging study aims to revise a common picture of Plato’s thinking about human motivation. Kamtekar identifies the picture as one whereby Plato’s Socrates initially embraces intellectualism because he holds that an agent is motivated only by rational considerations based on her own good, and rejects that standpoint in the Republic with the doctrine of the tripartite soul. In discussing Gail Fine’s contribution, Sharma challenges the idea that the pseudo-Platonic Sisyphus can productively be interpreted using the philosophical devices of Plato’s Meno. Sharma then explores another approach to the Sisyphus, which involves reading the dialogue as an attack on the tendency to assimilate deliberation to theoretical inquiry and, relatedly, as an attempt to call attention to the practical skills that are uniquely involved in deliberation. Sharma ends by speculating that the dialogue was composed by a member of the (...) school of Isocrates and was intended as a criticism of the intellectual orientation of Plato’s Academy. (shrink)
In this paper, I attempt a further elucidation and defense of some of the things I said in my article “Critical Reflections on Nāgārjuna’s Vigrahavyāvartanī” and a response to Professor Claus Oetke’s criticisms :371–394, 2012) of “a number of views which have been propagated” by me in my article. Although some additional issues have been raised, broadly, the themes addressed here are the same three as were the object of my investigation in that paper: namely, Nāgārjuna’s emptiness doctrine; his denial (...) that he has any thesis to advance or buttress; and his onslaught on the pramāṇa theory. Toward the end I argue that if I understand Nāgārjuna correctly, then what that thinker ends up providing is a criterion, not of reality, but of unreality, and that this stance, speaking philosophically, is tantamount to nihilism. This paper discusses the persistent devaluation of the girl child in India and the link between the entrenched perception of female valuelessness and the actual practice of infanticide of girl babies or foetuses. It seeks to place female infanticide, or ‘gendercide,’ within the context of Western-derived conceptions of ethics, justice and rights. To date, current ethical theories and internationally purveyed moral frameworks, as well as legal and political declarations, have fallen short of an adequate moral appraisal of infanticide. ABSTRACT M.M. McCabe argues that in Plato’s Euthydemus, Dionysodorus and Euthydemus hold a view she calls ‘chopped logos’. Chopped logos implies that nothing said is false, or opposed to any other statement, or entailed by any other statement. We focus on a key piece of evidence for chopped logos, the argument concluding that there is no such thing as contradiction, and defend a competing interpretation. The argument in question, and the eristic exchanges as a whole, are simply examples of a (...) dialectical game, a contest that is the verbal equivalent of physical competitions like wrestling or the pankration. The argument has no doctrinal significance and no deep connection with the other arguments of the dialogue. Its interest proves to be broadly methodological rather than doctrinal, a showpiece of eristic display. (shrink)
The complete characterization of a reservoir requires accurate determination of properties such as the porosity, gamma ray, and density, among others. A common workflow is to predict the spatial distribution of properties measured by well logs to those that can be computed from the seismic data. In general, a high degree of scatter of data points is seen on crossplots between P-impedance and porosity, or P-impedance and gamma ray, suggesting great uncertainty in the determined relationship. Although for many rocks there (...) is a well-established petrophysical model correlating the P-impedance to porosity, there is not a comparable model correlating the P-impedance to gamma ray. To address this issue, interpreters can use crossplots to graphically correlate two seismically derived variables to well measurements plotted in color. When there are more than two seismically derived variables, the interpreter can use multilinear regression or artificial neural network analysis that uses a percentage of the upscaled well data for training to establish an empirical relation with the input seismic data and then uses the remaining well data to validate the relationship. Once validated at the wells, this relationship can then be used to predict the desired reservoir property volumetrically. We have described the application of deep neural network analysis for the determination of porosity and gamma ray over the Volve field in the southern Norwegian North Sea. After using several quality-control steps in the DNN workflow and observing encouraging results, we validate the final prediction of the porosity and gamma-ray properties using blind well correlation. The application of this workflow promises significant improvement to the reservoir property determination for fields that have good well control and exhibit lateral variations in the sought properties.
