How Farmers Matter in Shaping Agricultural Technologies: Social and Structural Characteristics of Wheat Growers and Wheat Varieties. [REVIEW]Leland L. Glenna, Raymond A. Jussaume & Julie C. Dawson - 2011 - Agriculture and Human Values 28 (2):213-224.
Science and technology studies (STS) research challenges the concept of technological determinism by investigating how the end users of a technology influence that technology’s trajectory. STS critiques of determinism are needed in studies of agricultural technology. However, we contend that focusing on the agency of end users may mask the role of political-economic factors which influence technology developments and applications. This paper seeks to mesh STS insights with political-economic perspectives by accounting for relationships between availability of diverse technologies, variations in (...)

Contextualizing Farmers' Attitudes Towards Genetically Modified Crops.Kazumi Kondoh & Raymond A. Jussaume - 2006 - Agriculture and Human Values 23 (3):341-352.
Analyses of the role of technological development in agriculture are central to an understanding of social change in agri-food systems. The objective of this paper is to contribute to the formation of a broader perspective of how farmers are positioning themselves with respect to controversial agricultural technologies through an empirical analysis of Washington State farmers’ willingness or unwillingness to try Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) technology on their farms. The use of this type of biotechnology in farming has been criticized for (...)

    Angelic Machines: A Philosophical Dialogue (2).Kolcaba Raymond - 2000 - Ethics and Information Technology 2 (1):11-17.
Is machine autonomy the same as human autonomy? Answers to this question are developed inphilosophical dialogue. Becket Geist, a romanticphilosopher with scientific leanings, is irked by thearrogance of Fortran McCyborg – a Model 2000 cyborg. Nonette Naturski, a champion of naturalistic views, joins Becket in playing devil''s advocate by arguingthat Fortran''s actions are voluntary, not chosen byhim, and lacking the freedom caused by deliberatedesire. With the attempts to reduce Fortran''s status,Fortran ups the ante by arguing for yet higher status– that he (...)

Agency A Case Study In Bracketing Presuppositions.Russell Hurlburt & Neda Raymond - 2011 - Journal of Consciousness Studies 18 (1):295-305.
This paper has two goals. First, it illustrates how presuppositions present themselves. Second, it amplifies the comment that Russ made 1 about Terry Horgan and Mark Timmons: that their own presuppositions would likely stand toxically in the way of their discovering the important features of agency.

  7. "Fatal Practices": A Feminist Analysis of Physician-Assisted Suicide and Euthanasia.Diane Christine Raymond - 1999 - Hypatia 14 (2):1-25.
: In this essay, I examine the arguments against physician - assisted suicide Susan Wolf offers in her essay, "Gender, Feminism, and Death : Physician - Assisted Suicide and Euthanasia." I argue that Wolf's analysis of PAS, while timely and instructive in many ways, does not require that feminists reject policy approaches that might permit PAS. The essay concludes with reflections on the relationship between feminism and questions of agency, especially women's agency.

This is a critical notice/review essay on *L'embryogenèse du monde et le Dieu silencieux*, a manuscript completed by Raymond Ruyer in the early 1980s. It came out as a monograph in November 2013, with the Éditions Klincksieck in Paris. It offers a presentation in an organized fashion of many aspects of his thought. Ruyer considered that a book about God could only be churned into a series of chapters on the unachievable character of our knowledge in different domains of (...)

    Individuality Without Individualism: Review of Janice Raymond's A Passion for Friends. [REVIEW]Marilyn Friedman - 1988 - Hypatia 3 (2):131-137.
This review of Janice Raymond's A Passion for Friends focuses on her strong sense of the individual and of individuality. However, and this is the central contention of my paper, her perspective is quite distinct from liberal individualism. It is also a complex variation on the feminist concern with selves in relationships.

In a Solitary Place: Raymond Roussel's Brain and the French Cult of Unreason.John Tresch - 2004 - Studies in History and Philosophy of Science Part C 35 (2):307-332.
French surrealist author Raymond Roussel’s novel Locus solus depicted a brain-in-a-vat apparatus in which the head of the revolutionary orator Georges Danton was reanimated and made to speak. This scene of mechanically-produced language echoes Roussel’s own method of quasi-mechanical literary production as presented in How I wrote certain of my books. Roussel’s work participates in a wider fascination in modern French thought with the fragile connection, or violent disjuncture, between the body and mind. This paper discusses a number of (...)

    A World Without Why by Raymond Geuss.Gregory R. Smulewicz-Zucker - 2016 - Journal of Nietzsche Studies 47 (1):174-177.
Especially in recent works, Raymond Geuss has expressed an unabashedly bleak view of the practice of philosophy and what we can expect to gain from it. In his latest collection of essays, A World Without Why, Geuss continues to write in this vein. Although he characteristically addresses an impressive variety of topics, the book is held together by a general engagement with the question of authority and by Geuss’s ongoing effort to philosophize outside the bounds of contemporary philosophy. Indeed, (...)

    A Reply To Raymond Godfrey.John White - 1984 - Philosophy of Education 18 (1):119-121.
Raymond Godfrey wants to show that educating a pupil for autonomy, where she is left with the option of autonomously choosing to become non-autonomous, involves no less arbitrary an imposition than, say, educating her in traditional Islamic morality. This paper is a critical discussion of his view.

Survival of Bodily Death: A Question of Values: Raymond Martin.Raymond Martin - 1992 - Religious Studies 28 (2):165-184.
Does anyone ever survive his or her bodily death ? Could anyone? No speculative questions are older than these, or have been answered more frequently or more variously. None have been laid to rest more often, or — in our times — with more claimed decisiveness. Jay Rosenberg, for instance, no doubt speaks for many contemporary philosophers when he claims, in his recent book, to have ‘ demonstrated ’ that ‘ we cannot [even] make coherent sense of the supposed possibility (...)
