Knowledge as Process: Contextually Cued Attention and Early Word Learning.Linda B. Smith, Eliana Colunga & Hanako Yoshida - 2010 - Cognitive Science 34 (7):1287-1314.
Learning depends on attention. The processes that cue attention in the moment dynamically integrate learned regularities and immediate contextual cues. This paper reviews the extensive literature on cued attention and attentional learning in the adult literature and proposes that these fundamental processes are likely significant mechanisms of change in cognitive development. The value of this idea is illustrated using phenomena in children's novel word learning.

Problematic Publics: A Critical Review of Surveys of Public Attitudes to Biotechnology. [REVIEW]Renato Schibeci, Ian Barns & Aidan Davison - 1997 - Science, Technology and Human Values 22 (3):317-348.
This article discusses a range of recent major surveys of public attitudes toward biotechnology. The authors identify a number of problematic features of the surveys: the use of predominantly consumerist rather than civic conception of public discourse; the assumption of a unitary "general public," a "cognitive deficit" approach to public understanding of science; and the presumption of a politically neutral and instrumental ist model of science and technology. The authors then examine some alternative ap proaches to exploring perceptions of biotechnology (...)

Carl Schmitt and Authoritarian Liberalism: Strong State, Free Economy.Renato Cristi - 1998 - University of Wales Press.
Within Germany, Carl Schmitt's status as a political thinker is on a par with Machiavelli and Hobbes. With the rise in neo-conservatism and authoritarian liberalism in less developed countries such as Chile and Singapore, Renato Christi believes Schmitt's theories will become of considerable importance. Nazi Third Reich. His political theories provide an insight into the nature of Conservatism. well as extrapolate possibilities for the future.

Are Liberated Companies a Concrete Application of Sen’s Capability Approach?Roberta Sferrazzo & Renato Ruffini - 2021 - Journal of Business Ethics 170 (2):329-342.
The capability approach developed by Amartya Sen focuses on the enhancement of people’s capabilities, i.e. their real freedom to choose a life course they have reason to value. Applying the CA to the organizational context, the focus of human resource management is transformed, shifting away from the needs of the organization to the freedoms of the individual. This shift happens also inside the so-called ‘liberated companies,’ firms with an organizational form that allows employees the complete freedom, along with the responsibility, (...)

    On the Algebraizability of Annotated Logics.Renato A. Lewin, Irene F. Mikenberg & María G. Schwarze - 1997 - Studia Logica 59 (3):359-386.
Annotated logics were introduced by V.S. Subrahmanian as logical foundations for computer programming. One of the difficulties of these systems from the logical point of view is that they are not structural, i.e., their consequence relations are not closed under substitutions. In this paper we give systems of annotated logics that are equivalent to those of Subrahmanian in the sense that everything provable in one type of system has a translation that is provable in the other. Moreover these new systems (...)

  16. Mundos possíveis, propriedades naturais e mereologia.Renato Rocha - 2017 - Dissertation, Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina
I argue in this dissertation that natural properties play a central role in David Lewis' modal realism. To argue in favor of this thesis I present: a bottom-up explanation of a top-down possible world metaphysics; a new definition of natural properties and natural fusion, a new mereological operation. To achieve these aims, in the first chapter, I contextualize the discussion, in the second I resume the discussion about universals in contemporary philosophy and argue that, considering the distinct formulations of the (...)

    Literal‐Paraconsistent and Literal‐Paracomplete Matrices.Renato A. Lewin & Irene F. Mikenberg - 2006 - Mathematical Logic Quarterly 52 (5):478-493.
We introduce a family of matrices that define logics in which paraconsistency and/or paracompleteness occurs only at the level of literals, that is, formulas that are propositional letters or their iterated negations. We give a sound and complete axiomatization for the logic defined by the class of all these matrices, we give conditions for the maximality of these logics and we study in detail several relevant examples.

  33. On the Interpretative Essence of the Term “Interaction-Free Measurement”: The Role of Entanglement. [REVIEW]Renato M. Angelo - 2009 - Foundations of Physics 39 (2):109-119.
The polemical term “interaction-free measurement” (IFM) is analyzed in its interpretative nature. Two seminal works proposing the term are revisited and their underlying interpretations are assessed. The role played by nonlocal quantum correlations (entanglement) is formally discussed and some controversial conceptions in the original treatments are identified. As a result the term IFM is shown to be consistent neither with the standard interpretation of quantum mechanics nor with the lessons provided by the EPR debate.

In this paper we expand previous results obtained in [2] about the study of categorical equivalence between the category IRL 0 of integral residuated lattices with bottom, which generalize MV-algebras and a category whose objects are called c-differential residuated lattices. The equivalence is given by a functor ${{\mathsf{K}^\bullet}}$ , motivated by an old construction due to J. Kalman, which was studied by Cignoli in [3] in the context of Heyting and Nelson algebras. These results are then specialized to the case (...)

In this paper we make an algebraic study of the variety of MV*-algebras introduced by C. C. Chang as an algebraic counterpart for a logic with positive and negative truth values. We build the algebraic theory of MV*-algebras within its own limits using a concept of ideal and of prime ideal that are very naturally related to the corresponding concepts in l-groups. The main results are a subdirect representation theorem, a completeness theorem, a study of simple and semisimple algebras, and a (...)

    Algebraization of Logics Defined by Literal-Paraconsistent or Literal-Paracomplete Matrices.Eduardo Hirsh & Renato A. Lewin - 2008 - Mathematical Logic Quarterly 54 (2):153-166.
We study the algebraizability of the logics constructed using literal-paraconsistent and literal-paracomplete matrices described by Lewin and Mikenberg in [11], proving that they are all algebraizable in the sense of Blok and Pigozzi in [3] but not finitely algebraizable. A characterization of the finitely algebraizable logics defined by LPP-matrices is given. We also make an algebraic study of the equivalent algebraic semantics of the logics associated to the matrices ℳ32,2, ℳ32,1, ℳ31,1, ℳ31,3, and ℳ4 appearing in [11] proving that they are (...)

Recognizing Pitfalls of Seismic Structure and Amplitude Anomalies in Osprey Field, Brunei.Fuping Zhu, Renato Borbajo & Sebastian Darker - 2015 - Interpretation: SEG 3 (3):A15-A24.
The Osprey gas field was discovered in 1975 in the western offshore area of Brunei Darussalam. Two discovery wells penetrate the hanging wall of two separate growth faults and are associated with bright seismic amplitudes. Multiple thin reservoirs are separated by shales of 10 to a few hundred meters in thickness. In addition to seismic tuning of thin layers, there are many shallow gas clouds above these reservoirs, which cause significant and varying amount of push-down in seismic time data. Visualizing (...)

  45. Hegel on Freedom and Authority.Renato Cristi - 2005 - University of Wales Press.
While Hegel’s political philosophy has been attacked on the left by republican democrats and on the right by feudalist reactionaries, his apologists see him as a liberal reformer, a moderate who theorized about the development of a free-market society within the bounds of a stabilizing constitutional state. This centrist view has gained ascendancy since the end of the Second World War, enshrining Hegel within the liberal tradition. In this book, Renato Cristi argues that, like the Prussian liberal reformers of (...)
