    Self and Identity: Fundamental Issues.Richard D. Ashmore & Lee J. Jussim (eds.) - 1997 - Oup Usa.
This first volume in the Rutgers Series on Self and Social Identity presents a sophisticated and detailed analysis of some of the most fundamental issues facing scholars interested in studying self and identity. Chapters written by a world-class set of social scientists, from the fields of psychology, sociology, and anthropology, represent the diverse issues, perspectives, and controversies inherent in the recent wave of interest in the self, and suggest productive avenues of analysis and empirical research.

The role of giant axons in studies of the nerve impulse.Richard D. Keynes - 1989 - Bioessays 10 (2-3):90-93.
The large size of the individual axons in the motor nerves of certain invertebrates has facilitated technical approaches that were not feasible elsewhere. A brief account is given of the way in which giant axons have taken and held the lead in research on the mechanism of conduction.

Principles and Proofs: Aristotle’s Theory of Demonstrative Science.Richard D. McKirahan (ed.) - 1992 - Princeton University Press.
By a thorough study of the Posterior Analytics and related Aristotelian texts, Richard McKirahan reconstructs Aristotle's theory of episteme--science. The Posterior Analytics contains the first extensive treatment of the nature and structure of science in the history of philosophy, and McKirahan's aim is to interpret it sympathetically, following the lead of the text, rather than imposing contemporary frameworks on it. In addition to treating the theory as a whole, the author uses textual and philological as well as philosophical material (...)

    Describing the shapes of Fern leaves: A fractal geometrical approach.Richard D. Campbell - 1996 - Acta Biotheoretica 44 (2):119-142.
Fractal geometry offers a new approach to describing the morphology of fern leaves. Traditional morphology is based on the Euclidean concept of shape as an area defined by a boundary. This approach has not proven successful with fern leaves because they are so elaborate. Fractal geometry treats forms as relationships between parts rather than as areas. In fern fronds there are often constant relationships between parts. Four fractal methodologies for describing these relations within leaves are explored in this paper. These (...)

    DNA excision repair in mammalian cell extracts.Richard D. Wood & Dawn Coverley - 1991 - Bioessays 13 (9):447-453.
The many genetic complementation groups of DNA excision‐repair defective mammalian cells indicate the considerable complexity of the excision repair process. The cloning of several repair genes is taking the field a step closer to mechanistic studies of the actions and interactions of repair proteins. Early biochemical studies of mammalian DNA repair in vitro are now at hand. Repair synthesis in damaged DNA can be monitored by following the incorporation of radiolabelled nucleotides. Synthesis is carried out by mammalian cell extracts and (...)

    Plato and Socrates : A Comprehensive Bibliography 1958-1973.Richard D. McKirahan - 1978 - New York: Routledge.
This valuable work of reference provides a comprehensive bibliography on all scholarly work that was published on Plato and Socrates during the years 1958-73. It thus forms an important addition to Harold Cherniss’s bibliography, which covered the years 1950-7. The author has sought to include all materials primarily concerned with Socrates and Plato, together with other works which make a contribution to our understanding of the two philosophers. The bibliography is arranged by topic and there are cross-references at the end (...)

Philosophy before Socrates: an introduction with texts and commentary.Richard D. McKirahan - 1994 - Hackett.
Since its publication in 1994, Richard McKirahan's _Philosophy Before Socrates_ has become the standard sourcebook in Presocratic philosophy. It provides a wide survey of Greek science, metaphysics, and moral and political philosophy, from their roots in myth to the philosophers and Sophists of the fifth century. A comprehensive selection of fragments and testimonia, translated by the author, is presented in the context of a thorough and accessible discussion. An introductory chapter deals with the sources of Presocratic and Sophistic texts (...)

    Molecular biology and biophysics of ion channels.Richard D. Keynes - 1985 - Bioessays 2 (3):100-106.
The transmission of electrical impulses in nerve and muscle cells depends fundamentally on the operation of specific ion channels in their membranes. Recent technical advances in electrical recording from cell membranes have permitted the analysis of the properties of single ion channels and the measurement of gating currents. The results have revealed considerable complexities, in particular in the operation of voltage‐gated sodium channels, and in the relationships between the several open and closed states of the channels. An important new development (...)

Nelson, Hitler and Diana: Studies in Trauma and Celebrity.Richard D. Ryder - 2009 - Imprint Academic.
Clinical psychologist Richard Ryder approaches three iconic celebrities -- Horatio Nelson, Adolph Hitler, and Diana Princess of Wales -- as though they were his patients and presents a short psycho-biography of each. Beneath their obvious differences he finds striking similarities in their backgrounds and early experience, especially being deprived of their mothers' love. In a short Epilogue the author asks what lessons might be learned for the future from these three famous figures of the past.

    A biological interpretation of moral systems.Richard D. Alexander - 1985 - Zygon 20 (1):3-20.
. Moral systems are described as systems of indirect reciprocity, existing because of histories of conflicts of interest and arising as outcomes of the complexity of social interactions in groups of long‐lived individuals with varying conflicts and confluences of interest and indefinitely iterated social interactions. Although morality is commonly defined as involving justice for all people, or consistency in the social treatment of all humans, it may have arisen for immoral reasons, as a force leading to cohesiveness within human groups (...)

How Should Essence Be Determined?: Reflections on Hegel’s Two Divergent Accounts.Richard D. Winfield - 2008 - International Philosophical Quarterly 48 (2):187-199.
Hegel presents two very different accounts of the initial categorization of essence in his Science of Logic and his later Encyclopedia Logic, thereby raising the question of whether this discrepancy undermines the univocal necessity of systematic logic. A close examination of these arguments reveals that the Science of Logic account captures a necessary ordering that is incompletely presented in the Encyclopedia. The details are provided for comprehending why the logic of essence must begin with a contrast of the essential and (...)
