Child Workers, Globalization, and International Business Ethics: A Case Study In Brazil’s Export-Oriented Shoe Industry.J. Lawrence French & Richard E. Wokutch - 2005 - Business Ethics Quarterly 15 (4):615-640.
Disputes regarding the ethics of work by children have intensified in recent years, with little resolution. The impasses stem from failure to recognize the diverse forms of child work and a lack of empirical research regarding its causes and consequences. We report on data gathered in Brazil’s export-oriented shoe industry, which is notorious for the employment of children. Central findings are: 1) the causes of child work have less to do with backwardness and more to do with how shoe workers (...)

Whistle-Blowing for Profit: An Ethical Analysis of the Federal False Claims Act.Thomas L. Carson, Mary Ellen Verdu & Richard E. Wokutch - 2008 - Journal of Business Ethics 77 (3):361 - 376.
This paper focuses on the 1986 Amendments to the False Claims Act of 1863, which offers whistle-blowers financial rewards for disclosing fraud committed against the U.S. government. This law provides an opportunity to examine underlying assumptions about the morality of whistle-blowing and to consider the merits of increased reliance on whistle-blowing to protect the public interest. The law seems open to a number of moral objections, most notably that it exerts a morally corrupting influence on whistle-blowers. We answer these objections (...)

Strategic Corporate Social Responsibility and Orphan Drug Development: Insights From the US and the EU Biopharmaceutical Industry. [REVIEW]Olga Bruyaka, Hanko K. Zeitzmann, Isabelle Chalamon, Richard E. Wokutch & Pooja Thakur - 2013 - Journal of Business Ethics 117 (1):45-65.
In recent years, the biopharmaceutical industry has seen an increase in the development of so-called orphan drugs for the treatment of rare and neglected diseases. This increase has been spurred on by legislation in the United States, Europe, and elsewhere designed to promote orphan drug development. In this article, we examine the drivers of corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities in orphan drug markets and the extent to which biopharmaceutical firms engage in these activities with a strategic orientation. The unique context (...)

Comparison of Engagement with Ethics Between an Engineering and a Business Program.Steven M. Culver, Ishwar K. Puri, Richard E. Wokutch & Vinod Lohani - 2013 - Science and Engineering Ethics 19 (2):585-597.
Increasing university students’ engagement with ethics is becoming a prominent call to action for higher education institutions, particularly professional schools like business and engineering. This paper provides an examination of student attitudes regarding ethics and their perceptions of ethics coverage in the curriculum at one institution. A particular focus is the comparison between results in the business college, which has incorporated ethics in the curriculum and has been involved in ethics education for a longer period, with the engineering college, which (...)

    Bluffing in Labor Negotiations: Legal and Ethical Issues.Thomas L. Carson, Richard E. Wokutch & Kent F. Murrmann - 1982 - Journal of Business Ethics 1 (1):13 - 22.
This paper presents an analysis of bluffing in labor negotiations from legal, economic, and ethical perspectives. It is argued that many forms of bluffing in labor negotiations are legal and economically advantageous, but that they typically constitute lying. Nevertheless it is argued that it is generally morally acceptable to bluff given a typical labor-management relationship where one's negotiating partner is familiar with and most likely employing bluffing tactics him/herself. We also consider whether it is an indictment of our present negotiating (...)

    An Ethical Analysis of Deception in Advertising.Thomas L. Carson, Richard E. Wokutch & James E. Cox - 1985 - Journal of Business Ethics 4 (2):93 - 104.
This paper examines several issues regarding deception in advertising. Some generally accepted definitions are considered and found to be inadequate. An alternative definition is proposed for legal/regulatory purposes and is related to a suggested definition of the term deception as it is used in everyday language. Based upon these definitions, suggestions are offered for detecting and regulating deception in advertising. This paper additionally considers the grounds for the generally held but largely unquestioned assumption that deceptive advertising is unethical. It is (...)

This case deals with the corporate response to a crisis and the successful evacuation of approximately 900 hotel guests, staff, and family members of staff whowere stranded in the Fairmont New Orleans hotel by Hurricane Katrina. This rescue effort, spearheaded by managers at the sister Fairmont hotel in Dallas, Texas, was completed shortly after 12 a.m. on Friday, September 2, 2005, when the last bus with evacuees pulled into the Dallas Fairmont after making a round trip of more than 1000 (...)

Exploring the Antecedents of Organization Resilience.Richard E. Wokutch, Manisha Singal, Virginia W. Gerde & Alex Naar - 2016 - Proceedings of the International Association for Business and Society 27:269-281.
In an era of instant mass communication and pervasive social media, the ability of an organization to respond and recover quickly from sudden shocks and crises is extremely important to maintain organizational stability, public trust, and social license to operate. However, not all shocks affect firms in the same way and firms do not respond equally well to the same or similar shocks. One factor, organizational resilience, may explain why some firms are able to quickly recover after a shock and (...)

Ethical Decision-Making in Extreme Operating Environments.Manisha Singal, Richard E. Wokutch, Yaniv Poria & Michelle C. Hong - 2014 - Business and Professional Ethics Journal 33 (2-3):211-252.
The business landscape today is characterized by looming global challenges like natural disasters, war, and industrial accidents throughout the world. However, there is limited research on describing how businesses operate and cope in extreme environments and whether principles of ethical decision-making can be used as guidelines in such situations. To address this gap we describe and analyze organizational and business responses to three different extreme environments, namely the fall 2012 Gaza conflict, Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, and the so-called triple (...)

The publication of these interviews is the culmination of a very long-term project, with the first interview having been conducted in 1993 with Lee Preston and the most recent interview having been conducted in 2011 with Jim Post. This project has been very much of a team effort with Sandra Waddock, John (...)

    A Treatise Concerning the Principles of Human Knowledge, with Critical Essays. [REVIEW]A. R. E. - 1970 - Review of Metaphysics 24 (2):335-335.
This is an excellent addition to Bobbs-Merrill's "Text and Commentary Series." In addition to the text of the Principles, there are eleven critical essays, three of which are original with this volume. Turbayne has arranged the essays to parallel the unfolding of the major themes in the Principles. Thus, he himself opens with "Berkeley's Metaphysical Grammar," which picks up and develops the theme of the centrality of the study of language to the philosophical enterprise, a point Berkeley makes in his (...)

    Atheism and Freedom: A Response to Sartre and Baier: RICHARD E. CREEL.Richard E. Creel - 1984 - Religious Studies 20 (2):281-291.
A few years ago I ran across a statement by Jean-Paul Sartre which seemed to imply that if there is a God, then there can be no human freedom. That thesis struck me as questionable, but at the time I did not pause to examine it. More recently I ran across a similar, more explicit statement by Kurt Baier, and I decided the time to pause had come. My knee-jerk response to Baier – and I confess it was probably nothing (...)

The Fearful Merging of Self and Other: Intra-Civilizational and Inter-Civilizational Colonial Cultures in Richard E. Kim’s Lost Names.Stephen Joyce - 2015 - Cultura 12 (1):85-98.
Although most colonisations have been invasions of territory by neighbouring peoples with similar appearances, languages, and customs, postcolonial theory is dominated by cases of inter-civilizational imperialism between the West and the non-West. This article argues that a new theoretical framework is needed to describe intra-civilizational colonial encounters because the psychological conflicts of the intra-civilizational colonial sphere and their political ramifications function differently to those described in postcolonial theory. Drawing on Nobel Prize nominee Richard E. Kim’s memoir of growing up (...)

    Can God Know That He Is God?: RICHARD E. CREEL.Richard E. Creel - 1980 - Religious Studies 16 (2):195-201.
While reflecting one day on the enormous difficulties that men have in knowing that there is a God, a completely unexpected and unfamiliar question drifted into my purview – perhaps as a kind of ultimate expression of my philosophical frustration. ‘Indeed’, the question asked, ‘can even God know that he is God?’ At first I thought this query merely amusing. ‘Wouldn't it be funny if God cannot know that he is God! But of course he can.’ So my mind wandered (...)

Rights might be regarded as an objectionable and even a dangerous feature of moral, political, and legal arrangements. It is an element of all types of rights that Able's having right X entails requirements or prohibitions for Baker. These restrictions hold against Baker at Able's discretion, that is unless Able excuses Baker from respecting them. Nor are the restrictions merely decorative. We must presume that they are established because of the expectation that Baker would otherwise be disposed to interfere with (...)
