Cybernetics: Circular Causal and Feedback Mechanisms in Biological and Social Systems. Transactions of the Tenth Conference, April 22, 23, and 24, 1953, Princeton, N. J. [REVIEW]S. D. - 1956 - Review of Metaphysics 10 (2):373-373.
The program of which the cybernetics conferences are a part is described as "an experiment in communication, still in progress," in which the emphasis is on informal and critical discussion rather than uninterrupted presentation of formal papers. The articles have a refreshing frankness about them. Included are an introduction and a summing up of the previous nine conferences by Warren S. McCulloch, and articles on brain activity, on measures of semantic information, and on the nature and acquisition of meaning in (...)

    Philosophy’s Artful Conversation, by D. N. Rodowick. [REVIEW]Timothy Yenter - 2016 - Teaching Philosophy 39 (4):565-567.
Philosophy’s Artful Conversation draws on Gilles Deleuze, Stanley Cavell, and the later writing by Ludwig Wittgenstein to defend a “philosophy of the humanities.” Both because film studies is historically a site of contention and theoretical upheaval and because Rodowick accepts Cavell’s idea that (at least in the American context) film is philosophy made ordinary, bringing philosophical questions of skepticism and perfectionism into filmgoers’ lives inescapably, it makes sense to build this vision for the humanities out of writing on film. Although (...)

    On the D-N Model of Scientific Explanation.I. A. Omer - 1970 - Philosophy of Science 37 (3):417-433.
This paper discusses the D-N model of scientific explanation. It is suggested that explanation is a part of assertive discourse where certain principles must be observed. Then use is made of the relation between the informative content and logical content of a sentence (as shown, for instance, by Popper) to draw some of the conditions necessary for a sound model. It is claimed that the conditions of the model proposed in the present paper exhaust the insights of the papers in (...)

    The Sangha in Buddhist History1: D. N. DE L. YOUNG.D. N. De L. Young - 1970 - Religious Studies 6 (3):243-252.
Of all the distinctive features of the Buddhist religion, one of the most neglected is the sangha . Scholars give much attention to the study of texts and commentaries, the analysis of doctrines and the classification of schools. But the core of the Buddhist religion is the sangha , the community of bhikkhus around whose corporate life the religion is moulded. It is the existence and structure of the sangha which has shaped the history of Buddhism, enabled it to take (...)

The Figural as Interface in Film and the New Media : Review of 'Reading the Figural, or, Philosophy After the New Media' by D. N. Rodowick. [REVIEW]Warwick Mules - 2003 - Film-Philosophy 7 (7):7--56.
In his recently published book _Reading the Figural, or, Philosophy after the New Media_, D. N. Rodowick introduces the figural into the analysis of film and new media. The book contains revised versions of already published articles written in the 1980s and 1990s, [1] together with new material, and takes us on a journey through film theory and new media technologies to draw out the power of figuration in the coming digital age. Recognizing the 'tectonic shift' (205)currently taking place from (...)

An Anomaly in the D–N Model of Explanation.Alex Blum - 1989 - British Journal for the Philosophy of Science 40 (3):365-367.
It is argued that the constraints placed on the non-law premisses of a D–N explanation are irrelevant to their function and will not salvage the deductive requirement from triviality.
