Perceptions of Slow Codes by Nurses Working on Internal Medicine Wards.Freda DeKeyser Ganz, Rotem Sharfi, Nehama Kaufman & Sharon Einav - 2019 - Nursing Ethics 26 (6):1734-1743.
Background: Cardio-pulmonary resuscitation is the default procedure during cardio-pulmonary arrest. If a patient does not want cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, then a do not attempt resuscitation order must be documented. Often, this order is not given; even if thought to be appropriate. This situation can lead to a slow code, defined as an ineffective resuscitation, where all resuscitation procedures are not performed or done slowly. Research objectives: To describe the perceptions of nurses working on internal medicine wards of slow codes, including the (...)

Embedding Agamben's Critique of Foucault: The Theological and Pastoral Origins of Governmentality.Dotan Leshem - 2015 - Theory, Culture and Society 32 (3):93-113.
This article tackles Giorgio Agamben's critique of Michel Foucault's genealogy of governmentality in two ways: first, by presenting an alternative model of the relations between pastoral and theological economy and, second, by conducting a genealogy of the former as revealed in the state of exception, when canon law is suspended. Following the author's genealogy of oikonomia in the state of exception, he argues that politics and economy are distinct from one another by virtue of the fact that the primary relation (...)

Oikonomia in the Age of Empires.Dotan Leshem - 2013 - History of the Human Sciences 26 (1):29-51.
The article reviews the uses of the term ‘oikonomia’ in Greek-speaking antiquity and illustrates how the term was used in all spheres of human existence and in various arts and sciences, usually denoting the prudent dispensation of the field resources. In this era the arts and sciences also received their own economies, and the term oikonomia, designating in most cases the prudent management of resources, appears in political theory, military strategy, law, finance, medicine, literary criticism, architecture, music, history and rhetoric. Vasubandhu's Idealism: An Encounter Between Philosophy and Religion.Ornan Rotem - 1993 - Asian Philosophy 3 (1):15 – 28.
Abstract According to idealism the world, as we perceive it, is in effect a creation of the mind. There are many different forms of idealism and this paper investigates one form of idealism that was advocated by the 4th century Buddhist Yog?c?rin Vasubandhu and one not unfamiliar in the west, especially in the works of George Berkeley. This paper suggests that when idealism, as a metaphysical theory, is set within a soteriological framework, as is the case with Vasubandhu, it serves (...)

On the Consistency of the Definable Tree Property on ℵ.Amir Leshem - 2000 - Journal of Symbolic Logic 65 (3):1204 - 1214.
In this paper we prove the equiconsistency of "Every ω 1 -tree which is first order definable over (H ω 1 ·ε) has a cofinal branch" with the existence of a Π 1 1 reflecting cardinal. We also prove that the addition of MA to the definable tree property increases the consistency strength to that of a weakly compact cardinal. Finally we comment on the generalization to higher cardinals.

Corporate Belligerency and the Delegation Theory From Grotius to Westlake.Rotem Giladi - 2020 - Grotiana 41 (2):349-370.
This article starts with a critical reflection on John Westlake’s reading of the history of empire and the English/British East India Company – for him, essentially, the proper concern of ‘constitutional history’ rather than international law. For Westlake, approaching this history through the prism of nineteenth-century positivist doctrine, the Company’s exercise of war powers could only result from state delegation. Against his warnings to international lawyers not to stray from the proper boundaries of international legal inquiry, the article proceeds to (...)

World-Craving: Rahel Varnhagen, Daniel Paul Schreber, and the Strange Promise of Paranoia.Noga Rotem - 2020 - Political Theory 48 (2):192-217.
This essay reads Hannah Arendt’s Rahel Varnhagen alongside Sigmund Freud’s case history of paranoia, The Schreber Case, two texts about 18th- and 19th-century personalities caught up in the gender and ethnic politics of their times. Noting affinities between the fantasies documented in Varnhagen’s and Schreber’s memoirs, I compare Seyla Benhabib’s and Eric Santner’s readings of these two texts as political, not psychological, documents. I propose a reading of paranoia positioned between Benhabib’s too optimistic dismissal of paranoia and Santner’s too tragic (...)

  26. Is This Problem Likely to Be Solved? A Cognitive Schema of Effective Problem Solving.Raanan Lipshitz, Daphna Leshem Levy & Keren Orchen - 2006 - Thinking and Reasoning 12 (4):413 – 430.
The present study tested the existence of a cognitive schema that guides people's evaluations of the likelihood that observed problem-solving processes will succeed. The hypothesised schema consisted of attributes that were found to distinguish between retrospective case reports of successful and unsuccessful real world problem solving (Lipshitz & Bar Ilan, 1996). Participants were asked to evaluate the likelihood of success of identical cases of problem solving that differed in the presence or absence of diagnosis, the selection of appropriate or inappropriate (...)

Crossing Horizons: World, Self, and Language in Indian and Western Thought.Ornan Rotem (ed.) - 2008 - Cambridge University Press.
In this book, Shlomo Biderman examines the views, outlooks, and attitudes of two distinct cultures: the West and classical India. He turns to a rich and varied collection of primary sources: the _Rg Veda_, the Upanishads, and texts by the Buddhist philosophers Någårjuna and Vasubandhu, among others. In studying the West, Biderman considers the Bible and its commentaries, the writings of such philosophers as Plato, Descartes, Berkeley, Kant, and Derrida, and the literature of Kafka, Melville, and Orwell. Additional sources are (...)

    The Independence of Δ1n.Amir Leshem & Menachem Magidor - 1999 - Journal of Symbolic Logic 64 (1):350 - 362.
In this paper we prove the independence of δ 1 n for n ≥ 3. We show that δ 1 4 can be forced to be above any ordinal of L using set forcing. For δ 1 3 we prove that it can be forced, using set forcing, to be above any L cardinal κ such that κ is Π 1 definable without parameters in L. We then show that δ 1 3 cannot be forced by a set forcing to (...)

For $\delta^1_3$ we prove that it can be forced, using set forcing, to be above any L cardinal $\kappa$ such that $\kappa$ is $\Pi_1$ definable without parameters in L. We then show that $\delta^1_3$ cannot be forced by a set forcing to be above every cardinal of L. Finally we present (...)

The Uneasy Case of Multiple Injurers’ Liability.Shmuel Leshem & Ehud Guttel - 2014 - Theoretical Inquiries in Law 15 (2):261-292.
When harm is caused by multiple injurers, damages are allocated among the responsible injurers in proportion to their relative responsibility for harm. This Article shows that a proportional allocation of liability between strictly-liable injurers distorts incentives to take precautions. The effects of this distortion depend on the nature of the injurers’ precautions. If precautions are complements, injurers compete for lower liability shares, which results in excessive care-taking. If precautions are substitutes, injurers are afflicted by moral hazard, which gives rise to (...)

The current study aims to enhance our knowledge about the combat experiences and the challenges that female soldiers face both during and after their service. The study is based on qualitative methods and narrative analysis of in-depth semi-structured personal interviews with twenty military veterans. It aims to analyze (...)
