Towards a ‘Greater Degree of Integration’: The Society for the Study of Speciation, 1939–41.Joe Cain - 2000 - British Journal for the History of Science 33 (1):85-108.
Intellectual and professional reforms in evolutionary studies between 1935 and 1950 included substantial expansion, diversification, and realignment of community infrastructure. Theodosius Dobzhansky, Julian Huxley and Alfred Emerson organized the Society for the Study of Speciation at the 1939 AAAS Columbus meeting as one response to concerns about ‘isolation’ and ‘lack of contact’ among speciation workers worried about ‘dispersed’ and ‘scattered’ resources in this newly robust ‘borderline’ domain. Simply constructed, the SSS sought neither the radical reorganization of specialities nor the creation (...)

Synaesthetic Perception of Colour and Visual Space in a Blind Subject: An fMRI Case Study.Valentina Niccolai, Tessa M. van Leeuwen, Colin Blakemore & Petra Stoerig - 2012 - Consciousness and Cognition 21 (2):889-899.
In spatial sequence synaesthesia ordinal stimuli are perceived as arranged in peripersonal space. Using fMRI, we examined the neural bases of SSS and colour synaesthesia for spoken words in a late-blind synaesthete, JF. He reported days of the week and months of the year as both coloured and spatially ordered in peripersonal space; parts of the days and festivities of the year were spatially ordered but uncoloured. Words that denote time-units and triggered no concurrents were used in a control condition. (...)

Society Semantics for Four-Valued Łukasiewicz Logic.Edson Vinícius Bezerra - 2020 - Logic Journal of the IGPL 28 (5):892-911.
We argue that many-valued logics can be useful in analysing informational conflicts by using society semantics. This work concentrates on four-valued Łukasiewicz logic. SSs were proposed by Carnielli and Lima-Marques to deal with conflicts of information involving rational agents that make judgements about propositions according to a given logic within a society, where a society is understood as a collection $\mathcal{A}$ of agents. The interesting point of such semantics is that a new logic can be obtained by combining the logic (...)

Bottom Detection Method of Side-Scan Sonar Image for AUV Missions.Huapeng Yu, Ziyuan Li, Dailin Li & Tongsheng Shen - 2020 - Complexity 2020:1-9.
In order to obtain the measurement parameters of the sea bottom geomorphology or underwater objects, the first step in side-scan sonar image processing is bottom detection. Due to the complexity of the marine environment, the acoustic signals received by SSS are usually polluted by noises, which affect its image quality and make the extraction of image features difficult. To address this problem, this study proposes an automatic detection method for the sea bottom line based on the actual experimental acquisition of (...)

  11. The Science and Religion Dialogue.Holmes Rolston Iii - 2006 - In Fraser Watts & Kevin Dutton (eds.), Why the Science and Religion Dialogue Matters: Voices from the International Society for Science and Religion. Templeton Foundation Press.
are the two most important things in the world. A student promptly objected: "No, Professor, you are wrong. that's sex and money." I convinced him otherwise by the time the semester was over. But I am still trying to convince most of the world- Science is the firss Iact of modern life, and religion is the perennial carrier of meaning. Seen in depth and in terms of their long-range personal and cultural impacts, science and religion are the two most important (...)
