Fruit d'un colloque tenu en 2010 dans la ville de Budapest, cet ouvrage collectif introduit aux grands chapitres de l'oeuvre de l'académicien en même temps qu'elle lui adresse certaines questions permettant d'en mieux saisir les enjeux et d'en indiquer quelques prolongements possibles. Cartésianisme, phénoménologie et théologie : telles sont les trois voies thématiques empruntées afin d'interroger un travail qui a su se rendre indispensable à son époque.

Above all, there is the restatement of Lukacs unshaken conviction that the working class, with all the changes that have occurred in its way of life and composition, is still the historical carrier of social transformation. "Voyager ou découvrir est une aspiration majeure de l'homme. Diderot est toutefois sceptique sur l'utilité des voyages et sur la crédibilité des récits de voyageurs déjà dans ses premières oeuvres de fiction et dans les articles des premiers tomes de l'Encyclopédie. Vivre en voyage perpétuel signifie vivre en marge. De plus, l'incitation au voyage est le résultat de passions souvent nuisibles. Cette réflexion s'amplifie au fil de l'oeuvre de Diderot et surtout dans ses contributions à l'Histoire des deux Indes. Le (...) désir de voyager apparaît comme un motif néfaste pour l'humanité qui déclenche dans une certaine mesure le colonialisme. Pourtant l'enthousiasme se mêle parfois à la critique : le voyage de Diderot en Hollande et à Saint-Pétersbourg marque sa pensée politique. Comment rapprocher Diderot et Watteau, qui représentent deux conceptions artistiques foncièrement différentes? C'est dans une perspective interdisciplinaire, au croisement de la théorie de l'art, de la critique d'art et des études littéraires que les essais rassemblés dans le présent recueil proposent une réflexion peu conventionnelle sur les perceptions de l'image au xvii siècle. Au fil de notions difficilement définissables, telles que la mélancolie, le rêve, la grâce ou la légèreté, aptes cependant à s'ériger en concepts esthétiques généraux, les études réunies (...) ici visent à tracer les contours d'une poétique de l'image. À travers ces catégories, qui peuvent en effet servir de lien entre Diderot et Watteau, l'ouvrage prétend porter un éclairage nouveau sur les questions artistiques et contribuer ainsi à la réinterprétation des notions propres à la théorie de l'art française de l'époque classique."--Page 4 of cover.
