    The Philosophies of Psychiatry: Empirical Perspectives[REVIEW]Alan S. G. Ralston - 2013 - Medicine, Health Care and Philosophy 16 (3):399-406.
The past two decades have seen a surge in cross-disciplinary work in philosophy and psychiatry. Much of this work is necessarily abstract whilst those working in (...)the area are aware of the necessity of relating the theoretical and conceptual work to the vagaries of day-to-day practice. But given the diverse methods and aims of philosophy and psychiatry, crossing thecommunication gapbetween the two disciplines is easier said than done. In this article different methods of bridging this gap are presented and commented upon. A number of research studies are reviewed with an eye to the potential they display to develop interdisciplinary theory. An empirical approach to philosophy of practice with special attention to ordinary language use is proposed as a fruitful may forward. (shrink)

The Genius of the 'Original Imitation Game' Test.S. G. Sterrett - 2020 - Minds and Machines 30 (4):469-486.
Twenty years ago in "Turing's Two Tests for Intelligence" I distinguished two distinct tests to be found in Alan Turing's 1950 paper "Computing Machinery and Intelligence (...)": one by then very well-known, the other neglected. I also explained the significance of the neglected test. This paper revisits some of the points in that paper and explains why they are even more relevant today. It also discusses the value of tests for machine intelligence based on games humans play, giving an analysis of some twentieth century TV game shows and how they relate to the tests for machine intelligence in Turing's paper and in some other tests for machine intelligence that have been proposed since. Their value in distinguishing between 'wise' and simplycleverAI is discussed. (shrink)

    Ambiguity and Belief1: S. G. Williams.S. G. Williams - 2002 - Royal Institute of Philosophy Supplement 51:253-278.
This paper is concerned with the notion of ambiguityor what I shall refer to more generally as homonymyand its bearing upon various familiar puzzles about intensional (...) contexts. It would hardly of course be a novel claim that the unravelling of such puzzles may well involve recourse to something like ambiguity. After all, Frege, who bequeathed to us one of the most enduring of the puzzles, proposed as part of his solution an analysis of intensional contexts according to which all expressions change their sense when embedded in such contexts. And many contemporary philosophers who have discussed the puzzles, while not perhaps endorsing Frege's own somewhat extreme view, nevertheless take ambiguities in the contained sentences to be the key to the puzzles. In this paper, however, I wish to follow those who take the crucial source of homonymy, at least in the most difficult of the puzzles, to lie primarily not in the embedded sentences, but rather in the intensional verbs that embed them. I begin with a brief examination of certain aspects of ambiguity and homonymy. (shrink)

    Adam Smiths Politics: An Essay in Historiographic Revision[REVIEW]G. S. S. - 1979 - Review of Metaphysics 33 (2):452-453.
The purpose of Donald Winchs "historiographic revision" is to show that most recent interpretations of Smith have distorted his meaning because they have misread the intention (...)of Smiths work, treating it either as the first great justification of the nascent liberal capitalist polity, or as such a justification infiltrated by intimations of the Marxian notion of alienation. In Winchs view, either account of Smiths project is misleading by virtue of imposing nineteenth-century perspectives and categories upon "what is quintessentially a work of the eighteenth century." The problem, then, is to determine the historically appropriate context or problematic within which the complex and at times paradoxical thought of the Wealth of Nations, the Theory of Moral Sentiments, and the Lectures on Jurisprudence can reasonably be situated. As Winch notes, his study is an application of the contextualist methodological principles of Quentin Skinner and J. G. A. Pocock, and is similar in design to recent works on Locke by John Dunn and on Hume by Duncan Forbes. (shrink)
