Political Connection, Ownership Structure, and Corporate Philanthropy in China: A Strategic-Political Perspective.Huiying Wu, Xianzhong Song & Sihai Li - 2015 - Journal of Business Ethics 129 (2):399-411.
This paper investigates whether philanthropic giving decisions and amount of charitable giving are related to firms’ political connections and ownership type. To this end, Chinese firms listed on either the Shenzhen or Shanghai stock exchange between 2004 and 2011 are examined, where government interference in the business sector is prevalent, state ownership structure is dominant, and corporate political connections prevail. Our analyses show a significant and positive relationship between political connections and the likelihood and extent of firm contributions; a significant (...)

Seismic Sedimentology of Sand-Gravel Bodies on the Steep Slope of Rift Basins — A Case Study of the Shahejie Formation, Dongying Sag, Eastern China.Xiaomin Zhu, Rong Pan, Shunli Li, Hongbao Wang, Xin Zhang, Jiawang Ge & Zhiyong Lu - 2018 - Interpretation: SEG 6 (2):SD13-SD27.
A variety of genetic types of reservoirs with good hydrocarbon accumulation conditions have been developed in petroliferous rift basins. The near-provenance, coarse-grained depositional system on the steep slopes of rift basins has become an important oil and gas exploration area. However, due to the large changes in lithologies and difficulties in its identification and characterization, the challenges in oil/gas exploration are significant. Seismic sedimentology, in this case, provides an effective means of identifying and characterizing the complex, coarse-grained sediments. We use (...)

The activity of synsedimentary faults plays an important role in controlling the distribution of sand bodies in basins and furthermore the porosity and permeability of reservoirs. We have used fault interpretation, the method of image and granularity size analysis, and the seismic pumping effect to investigate the control of the activity of the Kongdong fault on the development degree of the dissolution pores and grain size, further studying the controlling mechanism of the activity of synsedimentary faults on reservoir quality. The (...)

The principal–principal perspective suggests that controlling shareholders have excessive influence on corporate philanthropy and may direct corporate funds to charitable causes to support their personal interests. Analysis of a sample of Chinese private firms listed on the Shenzhen or Shanghai stock exchange between 2004 and 2011 shows that there is a significant and negative relationship between corporate giving and the share held by the largest shareholders, suggesting that controlling shareholders are opportunistic in directing corporate charitable contributions; there is a significant (...)

In this paper, we investigate a novel synchronization method, which consists of nn≥2 cascade-coupled chaotic systems. Furthermore, as the number of chaotic systems decreases from n to 2, the proposed synchronization will transform into bidirectional coupling synchronization. Based on Lyapunov stability theory, a general criterion is proposed for choosing the appropriate coupling parameters to ensure cascading synchronization. Moreover, 4 Lü systems are taken as an example and the corresponding numerical simulations demonstrate the effectiveness of our idea.

We present centralized and distributed coordination models with all-to-all and limited communications, respectively. For the case of all-to-all communication between robots, theoretical analysis is presented to prove the exponential stability of the whole system. In real applications of robotic networks, a robot may only be allowed to exchange information with a limited number of neighbors. In such a limited (...)

Female Access to Fertile Land and Other Inputs in Zambia: Why Women Get Lower Yields.William J. Burke, Serena Li & Dingiswayo Banda - 2018 - Agriculture and Human Values 35 (4):761-775.
Throughout the developing world, it is a well-documented fact that women farmers tend to get lower yields than their male counterparts. Typically this is attributed to disproportionate access to high-quality inputs and labor, with some even arguing there could be a skills-gap stemming from unbalanced access to training and education. This article examines the gender-based yield gap in the context of Zambian maize producers. In addition to the usual drivers, we argue that Zambia’s patriarchal and multi-tiered land distribution system could (...)

This study examines the deliberations of professional MBA students when presented with a dilemma that weighs the difference between commitments to profit-maximization against concerns for fired workers who would need to seek a new job during a recession. Using content analysis, accounting, economic, and ethically based rationales that differ from the profit-maximizing recommendation are categorized. Results also show that those who make non-profit-maximizing recommendations consider, but ultimately reject the profit-maximizing approach to layoffs.

Voltage Stability Analysis of Front-End Speed Controlled Wind Turbine Integrated Into Regional Power Grid Based on Bifurcation Theory.Kaide Ren, Hongwei Li, Shuaibing Li & Haiying Dong - 2020 - Complexity 2020:1-11.
Since wind power has characteristics such as intermittent and fluctuation, the integration of large-scale wind turbines into the power grid will bring a great impact on the voltage stability of the system. In this paper, the influence of the front-end speed controlled wind turbine on the system voltage stability is studied. An actual model of the wind turbines, including the FSCWTs, connected to a regional power grid in Zhangye, Gansu Province, is established. Firstly, differential-algebraic equations describing the dynamic characteristics of (...)

State-Owned Enterprises as Bribe Payers: The Role of Institutional Environment.Liang Chen, Sali Li, Jingtao Yi & Noman Shaheer - 2019 - Journal of Business Ethics 159 (1):221-238.
Our paper draws attention to a neglected channel of corruption—the bribe payments by state-owned enterprises. This is an important phenomenon as bribe payments by SOEs fruitlessly waste national resources, compromising public welfare and national prosperity. Using a large dataset of 30,249 firms from 50 countries, we show that, in general, SOEs are less likely to pay bribes for achieving organizational objectives owing to their political connectivity. However, in deteriorated institutional environments, SOEs may be subjected to potential managerial rent-seeking behaviors, which (...)

Previous studies have shown that individuals in collectivist cultures may be more corrupt than those in individualist cultures when they are interacting with outgroup members. The countries that are least corrupt, according to the Transparency International Corruption Perceptions Index, tend to have horizontal individualist cultures, with Singapore being a prominent counterexample. Can findings at the cultural level of analysis be replicated at the individual level of analysis? To answer this question the authors examined the relationship between deception and cultural orientation (...)

Chinese Traditionality Matters: Effects of Differentiated Empowering Leadership on Followers’ Trust in Leaders and Work Outcomes.Shao-Long Li, Yuanyuan Huo & Li-Rong Long - 2017 - Journal of Business Ethics 145 (1):81-93.
From the perspective of the integrative model of organizational trust, this study proposes a multi-level model for whether, how, and when differentiated empowering leadership influences followers’ trust in leaders and their work outcomes. Drawing on a sample of 372 followers from 97 teams in China, it was found that the negative effect of differentiated empowering leadership on followers’ trust in leaders became salient when followers’ Chinese traditionality was low. Moreover, followers’ trust in leaders mediated the effect of differentiated empowering leadership (...)

This paper examines within the theoretical framework of intertextuality the mobilization of glocalization as an international marketing strategy in Nike’s and Adidas’s 2008 advertising campaigns in China. Intertextuality is seen as a form of mediation through which the glocalization strategy conducted within the domain of global marking is taken up in the domain of advertising communication. The paper also assumes the interrelations of intertextual performance to value orientations and group affiliations. By analyzing intertextuality in relation to affinity groups, it aims (...)

Finite-Time Adaptive Tracking Control for a Class of Pure-Feedback Nonlinear Systems with Disturbances Via Decoupling Technique.Qiangqiang Zhu, Ben Niu, Shengtao Li, Peiyong Duan & Dong Yang - 2020 - Complexity 2020:1-11.
This paper addresses the finite-time adaptive tracking control problem for a class of pure feedback nonlinear systems whose nonaffine functions may not be differentiable. By properly modeling the nonaffine function, the design difficulty of the pure feedback structure is overcome without using the median value theorem. In our design procedure, an finite-time adaptive controller is elaborately developed using the decoupling technology, which eliminates the limitation assumption on the partial derivatives of nonaffine functions. Furthermore, the constructed controller can stabilize the system (...)

Salt rock found in the stratum of the sedimentary basin is considered to be exemplary in terms of quality among the class of cap rocks, and it engulfs a certain proportion of the world’s hydrocarbon resources. In recent years, approximately 40% of newly discovered hydrocarbon resources in China have been detected under deep salt layers. Statistics suggest that nearly 40% of drilling accidents and 50% of casing damage incidents occur near the layer interfaces within a composite salt-gypsum formation. For the (...)
