Are Physicians on the Same Page About Do-Not-Resuscitate? To Examine Individual Physicians’ Influence on Do-Not-Resuscitate Decision-Making: A Retrospective and Observational Study.Yen-Yuan Chen, Melany Su, Shu-Chien Huang, Tzong-Shinn Chu, Ming-Tsan Lin, Yu-Chun Chiu & Kuan-Han Lin - 2019 - BMC Medical Ethics 20 (1):1-13.
Individual physicians and physician-associated factors may influence patients’/surrogates’ autonomous decision-making, thus influencing the practice of do-not-resuscitate orders. The objective of this study was to examine the influence of individual attending physicians on signing a DNR order. This study was conducted in closed model, surgical intensive care units in a university-affiliated teaching hospital located in Northern Taiwan. The medical records of patients, admitted to the surgical intensive care units for the first time between June 1, 2011 and December 31, 2013 were (...)

The Pearl River Mouth Basin, located on the northern continental margin of the South China Sea, underwent a complex evolution during the Paleogene. We have focused on the Baiyun Sag in the PRMB with the goal of constructing the architecture and depositional evolution of the Eocene–Early Oligocene synrift stage to the Late Oligocene early postrift stage of basin evolution. Based on analysis of 3D seismic data complemented by well logs and cores, the Paleogene basin fills can be classified into three (...)

    Do-Not-Resuscitate Orders for Critically Ill Patients in Intensive Care.Yuanmay Chang, Chin-Feng Huang & Chia-Chin Lin - 2010 - Nursing Ethics 17 (4):445-455.
End-of-life decision making frequently occurs in the intensive care unit (ICU). There is a lack of information on how a do-not-resuscitate (DNR) order affects treatments received by critically ill patients in ICUs. The objectives of this study were: (1) to compare the use of life support therapies between patients with a DNR order and those without; (2) to examine life support therapies prior to and after the issuance of a DNR order; and (3) to determine the clinical factors that influence (...)

    Is the Buffer Mechanism Universal in Biological Evolution?Kai Shu, Hou H. Huang & Pei G. Luo - 2011 - World Futures 67 (3):213 - 216.
The emergence of new biological traits is landmarks of evolutionary progress. However, when, how, and why do they appear? We propose a universal mechanism, a Buffering Mechanism of Evolution to understand these questions. We speculate that all organisms possess this potential buffer capacity. This capacity would be triggered by the pressures, natural or artificial, to express the intrinsic potential variants. The potential buffer capacity of the organism increases for further selections as evolutionary progress occurs. The higher the evolutionary level of (...)

This study aims to explore if local responsiveness pressure and subsidiary resources influence green management adoption of overseas subsidiaries, and to investigate the relationships between the level of green management adoption and performance. The 101 effective samples were collected from 583 Taiwanese firms, which are listed in the top 1000 manufactory firms and have invested in China. Though structural equation model (SEM) analysis' empirical results indicate that local responsiveness pressure and subsidiary resources both have positive effects on the level of (...)

Natale, Barry Smith, Yu Lin, Xiaowei Wang & Zixing Liu - 2015 - In IEEE International Conference on Bioinformatics and Biomedicine (IEEE BIBM 2015),. pp. 975-982.
Research has indicated that microRNAs (miRNAs), a special class of non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs), can perform important roles in different biological and pathological processes. miRNAs’ functions are realized by regulating their respective target genes (targets). It is thus critical to identify and analyze miRNA-target interactions for a better understanding and delineation of miRNAs’ functions. However, conventional knowledge discovery and acquisition methods have many limitations. Fortunately, semantic technologies that are based on domain ontologies can render great assistance in this regard. In our (...)

The Development of Non-Coding RNA Ontology.Jingshan Huang, Karen Eilbeck, Barry Smith, Judith Blake, Deijing Dou, Weili Huang, Darren Natale, Alan Ruttenberg, Jun Huan, Michael Zimmermann, Guoqian Jiang, Yu Lin, Bin Wu, Harrison Strachan, Nisansa de Silva & Mohan Vamsi Kasukurthi - 2016 - International Journal of Data Mining and Bioinformatics 15 (3):214--232.
Identification of non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) has been significantly improved over the past decade. On the other hand, semantic annotation of ncRNA data is facing critical challenges due to the lack of a comprehensive ontology to serve as common data elements and data exchange standards in the field. We developed the Non-Coding RNA Ontology (NCRO) to handle this situation. By providing a formally defined ncRNA controlled vocabulary, the NCRO aims to fill a specific and highly needed niche in semantic annotation of (...)

Are Women CEOs Valuable in Terms of Bank Loan Costs? Evidence From China.Jin-hui Luo, Zeyue Huang, Xue Li & Xiaojing Lin - 2018 - Journal of Business Ethics 153 (2):337-355.
Given that women CEOs are usually more risk averse, engage less in opportunistic behavior, and provide higher quality earnings than men CEOs, we argue that firms with women CEOs are likely to face lower operational and information risk and thus enjoy cheaper external funds. Using a large sample of Chinese A-share listed firms operating from 2006 to 2012, we find consistent evidence that Chinese banks tend to impose lower loan costs on firms with women CEOs compared to firms with men (...)

Identification of non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) has been significantly enhanced due to the rapid advancement in sequencing technologies. On the other hand, semantic annotation of ncRNA data lag behind their identification, and there is a great need to effectively integrate discovery from relevant communities. To this end, the Non-Coding RNA Ontology (NCRO) is being developed to provide a precisely defined ncRNA controlled vocabulary, which can fill a specific and highly needed niche in unification of ncRNA biology.

National Culture, Economic Development, Population Growth and Environmental Performance: The Mediating Role of Education.Yu-Shu Peng & Shing-Shiuan Lin - 2009 - Journal of Business Ethics 90 (2):203-219.
Literature on ethical behavior has paid little attention to the mechanism between macro-environmental variables and environmental performance. This study aims at constructing a model to examine the relationships which link cultural values, population growth, economic development, and environmental performance by incorporating the mediating role of education. The multiple linear regression model was employed to test the hypotheses on a 3-year-pooled sample of 51 countries. Empirical results conclude that national culture, economic development, and population growth would significantly influence environmental performance directly. (...)

    A Buddhist Take on Gilbert Ryle’s Theory of Mind.Chien-Te Lin - 2014 - Asian Philosophy 24 (2):178-196.
Gilbert Ryle?s The Concept of Mind (1949/2002. Chicago, IL: University of Chicago Press) is generally considered a landmark in the quest to refute Cartesian dualism. The work contains many inspirational ideas and mainly posits behavioral disposition as the referent of mind in order to refute mind?body dualism. In this article, I show that the Buddhist theory of ?non-self? is also at odds with the belief that a substantial soul exists distinct from the physical body and further point out similarities between (...)

Passivity and Synchronization of Coupled Different Dimensional Delayed Reaction-Diffusion Neural Networks with Dirichlet Boundary Conditions.Shanrong Lin, Yanli Huang & Erfu Yang - 2020 - Complexity 2020:1-21.
Two types of coupled different dimensional delayed reaction-diffusion neural network models without and with parametric uncertainties are analyzed in this paper. On the one hand, passivity and synchronization of the raised network model with certain parameters are studied through exploiting some inequality techniques and Lyapunov stability theory, and some adequate conditions are established. On the other hand, the problems of robust passivity and robust synchronization of CDDDRDNNs with parameter uncertainties are solved. Finally, two numerical examples are given to testify the (...)

    Could the Buddha Have Been a Naturalist?Chien-Te Lin - forthcoming - Sophia:1-20.
With the naturalist worldview having become widely accepted, the trend of naturalistic Buddhism has likewise become popular in both academic and religious circles. In this article, I preliminarily reflect on this naturalized approach to Buddhism in two main sections. In section 1, I point out that the Buddha rejects theistic beliefs that claim absolute power over our destiny, opting instead to encourage us to inquire intellectually and behave morally. The distinguishing characteristics of naturalism such as a humanistic approach, rational enquiry, (...)

Obtaining adequate informed consent from trauma patients is challenging and time-consuming. Healthcare providers must communicate complicated medical information to enable patients to make informed decisions. This study aimed to explore the challenges of obtaining valid consent and methods of improving the quality of the informed consent process for surgical procedures in trauma patients. We conducted a systematic review of relevant English-language full-text original articles retrieved from PubMed that had experimental or observational study design and involved adult trauma patients. TOPSIS Method Based on Correlation Coefficient and Entropy Measure for Linguistic Pythagorean Fuzzy Sets and Its Application to Multiple Attribute Decision Making.Mingwei Lin, Chao Huang & Zeshui Xu - 2019 - Complexity 2019:1-16.
The linguistic Pythagorean fuzzy set is an important implement for modeling the uncertain and imprecise information. In this paper, a novel TOPSIS method is proposed for LPFSs based on correlation coefficient and entropy measure. To this end, the correlation coefficient is proposed for the relationship measurement between LPFSs. Afterwards, two entropy measures are developed to calculate the attribute weight information. Then, a novel linguistic Pythagorean fuzzy TOPSIS method is proposed to solve multiple attribute decision-making problems. Finally, the LPF-TOPSIS method is (...)

    Rethinking Mind-Body Dualism: A Buddhist Take on the Mind-Body Problem.Chien-Te Lin - 2013 - Contemporary Buddhism 14 (2):239-264.
This paper is an effort to present the mind-body problem from a Buddhist point of view. Firstly, I show that the Buddhist distinction between mind and body is not absolute, but instead merely employed as a communicative tool to aid the understanding of human beings in a holistic light. Since Buddhism acknowledges a mind-body distinction only on a conventional level, it would not be fair to claim that the tradition necessarily advocates mind-body dualism. Secondly, I briefly discuss a response to (...)
