The "Doing Right Things on Behalf of Heaven" Promoted in the Book Shui Hu and Neo-Confucianism in the Sung and Ming Dynasties.Shih P'ing - 1979 - Contemporary Chinese Thought 11 (2):19-26.
The call for "doing right things on behalf of Heaven" made by Sung Chiang, the hero of the Chinese novel Shui hu [Water Margin], has long been welcomed by some people. They think that a right thing should be defined as the "revolutionary course" or the "reason" by which rebellions can be justified and that "doing right things on behalf of Heaven" is an antigovernment slogan. They are wrong. As has been clearly demonstrated in Shui hu, right things (...)

Climate change and the ecological intelligence of Confucius.Shih-yu Kuo - 2011 - Journal of Global Ethics 7 (2):185 - 194.
Confucius is conventionally regarded as the founder of secular humanism and as a philosopher concerned about humans and culture. I would add to this that Confucius should also be read as an environmental philosopher. One reason is the pedagogical dimension in Confucianism, which points to Confucius as an environmental educator ? not the least of which since much of environmental education relies on common sense and an enlightened collective self-interest. Another reason is an aspect I call ?ecological intelligence?, which is (...)

The Mediator CSR Plays the Effective Leadership Belief Role for Resource Dilemma Handling Leadership in Organizational Commitment During Sustainability Development.Kuo-Hua Chan, Shang-Ping Lin & I.-Tung Shih - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
The authors aim to explore a better fitting leadership style that is designed for the sustainable era in believing and committing to work for cherishing resources and developing the organization toward a new sustainable direction. This study developed the questionnaire items of the Resource-Dilemma-Handling-Leadership scale, representing a new sustainable era's new leadership style, and then to compare it with the transformational leadership style in order to highlight the importance of RHDL for sustainable development. This study took companies, which have more (...)

Engineering as “Technology of Technology” and the Subjugated Technical Practice.Bono Po-Jen Shih - 2023 - Techné Research in Philosophy and Technology 27 (1):86-114.
This article calls into question the simplistic identification of modern technology with quantitative efficiency in order to develop three main themes. First, I establish that technology, broadly construed, is the use of knowledge and resources to meet specific human needs. Accordingly, dominant technical practice that favors efficiency and numerical criteria and discriminates against other technologies should more appropriately be called “technology of technology.” Second, I delineate how dominant practice in engineering is an exemplar of technology of technology, when it becomes (...)

The most perfect natural laboratory in the world: Making and knowing Hawaii National Park.Ashanti Shih - 2019 - History of Science 57 (4):493-517.
This article reimagines the meanings of U.S. national parks and so-called ‘natural’ places in our environmental histories and histories of science. Environmental historians have created a compelling narrative about the creation and use of U.S. national parks as places for recreation and natural resource conservation. Although these motivations were undoubtedly significant, I argue that some of the early parks were created and used for a third, often overlooked, reason: to preserve a permanent, state-sanctioned space for scientific knowledge production. Deconstructing the (...)

Dream Lucidity and the Attentional Network Task.Moo-Rung Loo & Shih-Kuen Cheng - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
This study investigated the relationship between dream lucidity, i.e., a dreamer’s insight to the ongoing dream, and attention by considering lucidity as a trait. We examined the ways in which lucidity correlates with the orienting, alerting, and conflict components of the attentional network. A total of 77 participants rated the lucidity of their dreams over 7 consecutive days with the LuCiD scale and then completed the attentional network task. A negative correlation between trait lucidity and the conflict score of the (...)

Corporate Social Responsibility and Team Performance: The Mediating Role of Team Efficacy and Team Self-Esteem. [REVIEW]Chieh-Peng Lin, Yehuda Baruch & Wei-Chi Shih - 2012 - Journal of Business Ethics 108 (2):167-180.
This study examines the influence of three components of corporate social responsibility on team performance. In the proposed model of this study, team performance is indirectly affected by three dimensions of perceived corporate citizenship (i.e., economic, legal, and ethical citizenship) via the mediation of team efficacy and team self-esteem. Surveying members of 172 teams confirms most of our hypothesized effects. Our results show that economic citizenship influences team performance via the mediation of both team efficacy and team self-esteem. However, legal (...)

    What is Beauty and Wherein Does Beauty Lie?Hung I.-Jan - 1974 - Contemporary Chinese Thought 6 (2):69-84.
The essays on aesthetics in recent publications, beginning with the criticisms of Chu Kuang-ch'ien's point of view in aesthetics and continuing down to his article "How Can Aesthetics be Materialistic and Dialectic?" [Mei-hsüeh tsen-yang ts'ai neng shih wei-wu ti yu shih pien-cheng ti?"], have focused on the problem of the relationship between the subjective and the objective in beauty and in sense of beauty. This is a fundamental problem in aesthetics, and only when we have solved this problem (...)
