Compensation of Intellectual Disability in a Relational Dialogue on Down Syndrome.Fabiola Ribeiro de Souza & Silviane Bonaccorsi Barbato - 2020 - Outlines. Critical Practice Studies 21 (1):49-68.
The historical-cultural theory of Intellectual Disability overcompensation/compensation is referenced in several studies, but little empirical evidence is presented to corroborate this thesis. In this work, 13 current studies were analysed about the behavioural profile of people with Down syndrome, a case of neurobiological ID, published in the last 15 years, in order to verify the possibility of dialogue with the theorizing about compensation. Despite contributing to an up to date understanding of DS, the results point to similarities between different scientific (...)

  2. Jain Approaches to Plurality: Identity as Dialogue.Melanie Barbato - 2017 - Brill | Rodopi.
In _Jain Approaches to Plurality_ Melanie Barbato offers a new perspective on the Jain teaching of plurality and how it allowed Jains to engage with other discourses from Indian inter-school philosophy to global interreligious dialogue.

Search Regimes and the Industrial Dynamics of Science.Andrea Bonaccorsi - 2008 - Minerva 46 (3):285-315.
The article addresses the issue of dynamics of science, in particular of new sciences born in twentieth century and developed after the Second World War (information science, materials science, life science). The article develops the notion of search regime as an abstract characterization of dynamic patterns, based on three dimensions: the rate of growth, the degree of internal diversity of science and the associated dynamics (convergent vs. proliferating), and the nature of complementarity. The article offers a conceptual discussion for the (...)

Universities in the New Knowledge Landscape: Tensions, Challenges, Change—An Introduction.Andrea Bonaccorsi, Cinzia Daraio & Aldo Geuna - 2010 - Minerva 48 (1):1-4.
In the last decades of the twentieth century universities in Europe and other OECD countries have undergone a profound transformation. They have evolved from mainly élite institutions for teaching and research to large (public and private) organisations responsible for mass higher education and the production and distribution of new knowledge. Increasingly, new knowledge is produced by universities not only for its own sake but also for potential economic gains.

    New Forms of Complementarity in Science.Andrea Bonaccorsi - 2010 - Minerva 48 (4):355-387.
New sciences born or developed in the 20th century (information, materials, life science) are based on forms of complementarity that differ from the past. The paper discusses cognitive, or disciplinary, institutional, and technical complementarity. It argues that new sciences apply a reductionist explanatory strategy to complex multi-layered systems. In doing so the reductionist promise is falsified, generating the need for multi-level kinds of explanation (e.g. in post-genomic molecular biology), new forms of complementarity between scientific and non-scientific organizations, and new forms (...)

    Joint Time-Variant Spectral Analysis — Part 1: Forward Modeling the Effects of Thin-Bed Layering.Ramses G. Meza, J. Antonio Sierra, John P. Castagna & Umberto Barbato - 2018 - Interpretation: SEG 6 (4):T967-T983.
Using time-frequency and time-phase analysis we found that for an isolated thin bed in a binary-impedance setting, there is no observable sensitivity in preferential illumination as layered net-to-gross changes within the isolated thin bed, regardless of the way the internal layering is distributed — either uniformly or semirandomly. The NTG signature is observed on the amplitude responses, rather than any specific frequency or phase component. On the other hand, external mutual thin-bed interference can significantly change the preferred phase component for (...)

    Joint Time-Variant Spectral Analysis — Part 2: A Case Study.Ramses G. Meza, Antonio Sierra, John P. Castagna & Umberto Barbato - 2018 - Interpretation: SEG 6 (4):T985-T999.
The joint time-frequency and time-phase analysis applied to a field seismic data highlights lateral changes on preferential frequency and phase illumination at the target across secondary faults. Mutual thin-bed interference modeling suited for the case study area was performed using a well-tying well-based extracted wavelet assumed to be representative of the wavelet embedded on the input seismic data. The long coda of this wavelet is also present on the corresponding thin-bed waveform, indicating the possibility of more complex mutual interference patterns (...)

The Socio-Political Construction of a European Census of Higher Education Institutions: Design, Methodological and Comparability Issues.Benedetto Lepori & Andrea Bonaccorsi - 2013 - Minerva 51 (3):271-293.
This paper reports on an experiment concerning the social construction of statistical definitions, where the first census of Higher Education Institutions in Europe has been developed. It conceptualizes the construction of indicators as a social process of definitions and boundaries’ negotiation, involving value judgments, social and political opinions, as well as practical interests and power strategies of actors. The paper exemplifies this process on three issues, namely the social demand for establishing a census, the controversy concerning the definition of a (...)

    Healing Experiences Around Death.Kevin McGovern - 2013 - Chisholm Health Ethics Bulletin 18 (4):8.
McGovern, Kevin This article explores Reflections of a Setting Sun: Healing Experiences around Death, written by palliative care physician Michael Barbato. It considers caring for someone who is dying, and preparing for death. A major focus of this article is deathbed visions after which a dying person reports being visited by relatives or friends who have already died.
