Do LGBT Workplace Diversity Policies Create Value for Firms?Mohammed Hossain, Muhammad Atif, Ammad Ahmed & Lokman Mia - 2020 - Journal of Business Ethics 167 (4):775-791.
We show that the U.S. anti-discriminatory laws prohibiting discrimination in the workplace based on sexual orientation and gender identity identities) spur innovation, which ultimately leads to higher firm performance. We use the Human Rights Campaign’s Corporate Equality Index of 398 U.S. firms between 2011 and 2014, and find a significantly positive relationship between CEI and firm innovation. We also find that an interacting effect of CEI and firm innovation leads to higher firm performance. We use our understanding of Rawls’ Theory (...)

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the nature of rhetoric and rhetorical strategies that are implicit in the standalone sustainability reporting of the top 24 companies of the Fortune 500 Global. We adopt Bormann’s :396–407, 1972) SCT framework to study the rhetorical situation and how corporate sustainability reporting messages can be communicated to the audience. The SCT concepts in the sustainability reporting’s communication are subject to different types of legitimacy strategies that are used by corporations as a validity (...)

The Ethics of Care as a Universal Framework for Global Journalism.Mohammad Delwar Hossain & James Aucoin - 2018 - Journal of Media Ethics 33 (4):198-211.
ABSTRACTThe search for universal ethics among journalists has yet to receive general acceptance because previous attempts have sought a code of ethics to which all journalists around the globe could agree. Yet, starting with the universal principle of caring for others leads to seeing the feminist approach to ethics, namely the ethics of care and feminist discursive ethics, as a partial approach toward a universal ethic for journalists. Building on the work of Gilligan, Steiner, Buzzanell and others, we argue that (...)

Prevalence of Child Marriage Among Bangladeshi Women and Trend of Change Over Time.Md Golam Hossain, Rashidul Alam Mahumud & Aik Saw - 2016 - Journal of Biosocial Science 48 (4):530-538.
SummaryMany Bangladeshi women marry early, and many marry before the legal age of 18 years. This practice has been associated with a higher risk of health and medical morbidities, and also early pregnancy with higher pre- and postnatal complications. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence, and factors associated with, child marriage among Bangladeshi women using multiple binary logistic regression analysis of data from the BDHS-2011. Further analysis on the trend of age at first marriage was performed (...)

SummaryEarly onset of menarche has been shown to be associated with breast cancer and ischaemic heart disease. Studies on age at menarche of the Malaysian population are poorly documented. This study aimed to determine the influence of anthropometric and socio-demographic factors on the age at menarche of university students in Malaysia. Data were obtained in 2010–11 from 961 students between the ages of 18 and 25 years from the University of Malaya using stratified sampling, and multiple regression analysis was applied. (...)

Disagreement in Spousal Reports of Current Contraceptive Use in Sub-Saharan Africa.Stan Becker, Mian B. Hossain & Elizabeth Thomson - 2006 - Journal of Biosocial Science 38 (6):779-796.
Contraceptive prevalence is a key variable estimated from Demographic and Health Surveys. But the prevalence estimated from reports of husbands differs widely from that estimated for wives. In this research, using data from six Demographic and Health Surveys of sub-Saharan Africa, reports from spouses in monogamous couples with no other reported sex partners in the recent period are examined. Agreement ranged from 47% to 82%, but among couples in which one or both reported use, the category represented less than half (...)

Association Between Number of Sexual Partners and Utilization of Family Planning and Sexually Transmitted Infection Services by Men Aged 15–44 in the United States. [REVIEW]Mian B. Hossain, Yvonne Bronner, Ifeyinwa Udo & Sabriya Dennis - 2020 - Journal of Biosocial Science 52 (1):14-26.
Unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections pose a huge public health problem in the United States. Efforts towards reducing unintended pregnancies have previously focused on women, but the role of men in family planning and preventing unwanted pregnancy is becoming clearer. The primary objective of the study was to fully examine the utilization of family planning services by men in the US, and to determine whether factors such as race, health insurance type and number of sexual partners influenced their utilization (...)

Hate speech has spread more rapidly through the daily use of technology and, most notably, by sharing your opinions or feelings on social media in a negative aspect. Although numerous works have been carried out in detecting hate speeches in English, German, and other languages, very few works have been carried out in the context of the Bengali language. In contrast, millions of people communicate on social media in Bengali. The few existing works that have been carried out need improvements (...)

This study explored the association between socio-demographic factors and the body mass index of women of reproductive age in Bangladesh. Data from the 2014 Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey were analysed using Multiple Linear Regression and Quantile Regression analyses. The study sample comprised 15,636 non-pregnant women aged 15–49. The mean BMI of the women was 22.35±4.12 kg/m2. Over half had a BMI in the normal range, and 18.50%, 20.00% and 4.75% were underweight, overweight and obese, respectively. The results of the (...)

    Gadamer's Hermeneutics.Altaf Hossain - 2007 - The Proceedings of the Twenty-First World Congress of Philosophy 11:69-78.
Hermeneutics, in its phenomenological mode, has become one of the dominating issues in contemporary philosophical discours. Hans-Georg Gadamer, the leading exponent of phenomenological hermeneutics, develops his theory in his monumental work Truth and Method1, by regarding hermeneutics as an exploration of both the archaeology of human understanding and constitutive role of language in experience. In this paper, we have presented a brief exposition of Gadamer's views, giving an emphasis on how human understanding of objects inevitably mingles with its traditions or (...)

Petrophysics and Rock Physics Modeling of Diagenetically Altered Sandstone.Zakir Hossain & Yijie Zhou - 2015 - Interpretation: SEG 3 (1):SA107-SA120.
We worked to establish relationships among porosity, permeability, resistivity, and elastic wave velocity of diagenetically altered sandstone. Many such relationships are documented in the literature; however, they do not consider diagenetic effects. Combining theoretical models with laboratory measured data, we derived mathematical relationships for porosity permeability, porosity velocity, porosity resistivity, permeability velocity, velocity resistivity, and resistivity permeability in diagenetically altered sandstone. The effects of clay and cementation were evaluated using introduced coefficients in these relationships. We found that clean sandstone could (...)
