Minimizing motor mimicry by myself: Self-focus enhances online action-control mechanisms during motor contagion.Stephanie Spengler, Marcel Brass, Simone Kühn & Simone Schütz-Bosbach - 2010 - Consciousness and Cognition 19 (1):98-106.
Ideomotor theory of human action control proposes that activation of a motor representation can occur either through internally-intended or externally-perceived actions. Critically, sometimes these alternatives of eliciting a motor response may be conflicting, for example, when intending one action and perceiving another, necessitating the recruitment of enhanced action-control to avoid motor mimicry. Based on previous neuroimaging evidence, suggesting that reduced mimicry is associated with self-related processing, we aimed to experimentally enhance these action-control mechanisms during motor contagion by inducing self-focus. In (...)

  4. Heisenberg’s Uncertainty Relation and Bell Inequalities in High Energy Physics: An effective formalism for unstable two-state systems.Antonio Di Domenico, Andreas Gabriel, Beatrix C. Hiesmayr, Florian Hipp, Marcus Huber, Gerd Krizek, Karoline Mühlbacher, Sasa Radic, Christoph Spengler & Lukas Theussl - 2012 - Foundations of Physics 42 (6):778-802.
An effective formalism is developed to handle decaying two-state systems. Herewith, observables of such systems can be described by a single operator in the Heisenberg picture. This allows for using the usual framework in quantum information theory and, hence, to enlighten the quantum features of such systems compared to non-decaying systems. We apply it to systems in high energy physics, i.e. to oscillating meson–antimeson systems. In particular, we discuss the entropic Heisenberg uncertainty relation for observables measured at different times at (...)

Extinct megafaunal mammals in the Americas are often linked to seed-dispersal mutualisms with large-fruiting tree species, but large-fruiting species in Europe and Asia have received far less attention. Several species of arboreal Maloideae (apples and pears) and Prunoideae (plums and peaches) evolved large fruits starting around nine million years ago, primarily in Eurasia. As evolutionary adaptations for seed dispersal by animals, the size, high sugar content, and bright colorful visual displays of ripeness suggest that mutualism with megafaunal mammals facilitated the (...)

Knowing Students' Characteristics: Opportunities to Adapt Physical Education Teaching.Alina Kirch, Melina Schnitzius, Sarah Spengler, Simon Blaschke & Filip Mess - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 12:619944.
Physical Education (PE) aims to convey the joy of exercise and by this educate students to lifelong physical activeness. Student motivation in PE decreases during the school career. This study therefore comprehensively analyzes student characteristics determining motivation in PE:General Personality Traits, Physical Self-Concept, Achievement Motive, Motives to be physically active, andSports Interest. This contribution aims to describe students' prerequisites in the PE context by using an aggregated assessment of the abovementioned general plus sport specific characteristics and to detect gender, class, (...)

Big Five Personality Traits Predict Successful Transitions From School to Vocational Education and Training: A Large-Scale Study.Désirée Nießen, Daniel Danner, Marion Spengler & Clemens M. Lechner - 2020 - Frontiers in Psychology 11:499880.
Educational transitions play a pivotal role in shaping educational careers, and ultimately social inequality. Whereas parental socioeconomic status (SES) and cognitive ability have long been identified as key determinants of successful educational transitions, much less is known about the role of socio-emotional skills. To address this gap, the present study investigated whether Big Five personality traits predict success in the transition from secondary school to vocational education and training (VET) above and beyond SES, cognitive ability, and other covariates. Using data (...)

Inside Out: A Scoping Review on the Physical Education Teacher’s Personality.Melina Schnitzius, Alina Kirch, Filip Mess & Sarah Spengler - 2019 - Frontiers in Psychology 10.
The teacher’s personality in general plays an important role in the educational process. It is often examined in relation to outcome factors on the teacher or student side, e.g. teaching effectiveness or student motivation. Physical education (PE) with its peculiarities and allocated educational mandate particularly demands the personality of the PE teacher. Research considering this group of teachers is sparse, diverse and hard to capture due to different personality understandings. Our review therefore aims at identifying and analyzing underlying personality understandings, (...)

Routledge Revivals: Man and Technics : A Contribution to a Philosophy of Life.Oswald Spengler - 1932 - Routledge.
First published in 1932, this book, based on an address delivered in 1931, presents a concise and lucid summary of the philosophy of the author of _The Decline of the West_, Oswald Spengler. It was his conviction that the technical age — the culture of the machine age — which man had created in virtue of his unique capacity for individual as well as racial technique, had already reached its peak, and that the future held only catastrophe. He argued it (...)

First published in 1934, the ideas in this book were developed just prior to the Nazi seizure of power and it also reflects on its aftermath. It assessed the decline of European power and the crisis of Western civilization in the face of conflict between the ruling class and the lowers classes in white nations, and the ‘Coloured World Revolution’ — arguing that only by adherence to their inherited ‘Prussianism’ would Germany have the solidity to be able to combat these (...)

Shared Use and Safe Routes to School: Managing the Fear of Liability.Benjamin D. Winig, John O. Spengler & Alexis M. Etow - 2015 - Journal of Law, Medicine and Ethics 43 (S1):36-39.
This paper examines two policy initiatives that research shows can increase opportunities for physical activity and, in turn, improve health outcomes. These initiatives — shared use and Safe Routes to School — can and should be embraced by schools to improve student and community health. Fear of liability, however, has made many schools reluctant to support these efforts despite their proven benefits. This paper addresses school administrators’ real and perceived liability concerns and identifies four strategies for managing the fear of (...)
