Enhancement of cognitive control by approach and avoidance motivational states.Adam C. Savine, Stefanie M. Beck, Bethany G. Edwards, Kimberly S. Chiew & Todd S. Braver - 2010 - Cognition and Emotion 24 (2):338-356.
Affective variables have been shown to impact working memory and cognitive control. Theoretical arguments suggest that the functional impact of emotion on cognition might be mediated through shifting action dispositions related to changes in motivational orientation. The current study examined the effects of positive and negative affect on performance via direct manipulation of motivational state in tasks with high demands on cognitive control. Experiment 1 examined the effects of monetary reward on task-switching performance, while Experiment 2 examined the effects of (...)

Investigating Emerging Biomedical Practices: Zones of Awkward Engagement on Different Scales.Stefan Beck, Jörg Niewöhner & Michalis Kontopodis - 2011 - Science, Technology, and Human Values 36 (5):599-615.
This special issue of Science, Technology, & Human Values critically explores a new stage in which the life sciences and biomedical practices have entered. This new stage is marked by postgenomic developments and an increased interest of life sciences in the everyday lives of people outside laboratories and clinical settings. Furthermore, particular attention is given to many chronic and degenerative disorders such as cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer’s disease, or developmental disorders. These developments coincide—or have become entangled—with a new set of interests (...)

The Problem of Expertise. From Experience to SkilfulPractices to Expertise. Ecological and Pragmatist Perspectives.Stefan Beck - 2015 - European Journal of Pragmatism and American Philosophy 7 (1).
The problem of expertise plays a key role in current scientific and political debates. Dominant approaches to expertise are focused on knowledge as an idealistic content. Given the partial inadequacy of these perspectives, an amended theoretical and methodological approach is needed. This paper aims then at sketching a relational conceptualization of expertise. At this purpose, the connections between recent anthropological theories and pragmatist theories will be highlighted.

Staging Bone Marrow Donation as a Ballot: Reconfiguring the Social and the Political Using Biomedicine in Cyprus.Stefan Beck - 2011 - Body and Society 17 (2-3):93-119.
The article analyses practices, perceptions and political dramatizations of bone marrow donation in Cyprus. Based on empirical data from an ethnographic study on practices of organ and bone marrow transplantation in postcolonial Cyprus, forms of oppositional biopolitics are analysed that are not bound by the modern, étatist regime of governing populations but capitalize on new developments in biomedicine, on new political movements, as well as on transformations in the political sphere. These reconfigurations are interpreted as instances of an emerging bio-subpolitics (...)
