Ethical Implications of Closed Loop Brain Device: 10-Year Review.Swati Aggarwal & Nupur Chugh - 2020 - Minds and Machines 30 (1):145-170.
Closed Loop medical devices such as Closed Loop Deep Brain Stimulation and Brain Computer Interface are some of the emerging neurotechnologies. New generations of implantable brain–computer interfaces have recently gained success in human clinical trials. These implants detect specific neuronal patterns and provide the subject with information to respond to these patterns. Further, Closed Loop brain devices give control to the subject so that he can respond and decide on a therapeutic goal. Although the implants have improved subjects’ quality of (...)

Does Use of Solid Fuels for Cooking Contribute to Childhood Stunting? A Longitudinal Data Analysis From Low- and Middle-Income Countries.Ashish Kumar Upadhyay, Swati Srivastava & Vinod Mishra - 2021 - Journal of Biosocial Science 53 (1):121-136.
Using longitudinal data from the first and second waves of the Young Lives Study in Ethiopia, India, Peru and Vietnam, conducted in 2002 and 2006–07, and a repeated measures mixed model, this study examined the effect of the use of solid fuels for cooking on childhood stunting among children aged 5–76 months. The analysis showed that in all four populations, the average height-for-age z-score was much lower among children living in households using solid fuels than among children in households using (...)

  8. A Success Story of Reduction in Childhood Stunting and Underweight in India: Analysis of Pooled Data From Three Rounds of Indian Demographic and Health Surveys.Swati Srivastava & Ashish Kumar Upadhyay - forthcoming - Journal of Biosocial Science:1-18.
This study used a series of individual-level datasets from National Family Health Surveys conducted in 1998–99, 2005–06 and 2015–16 to assess the factors behind the reduction in childhood stunting and underweight in India between the years 1998–99 and 2015–16. A multivariable decomposition regression analysis was performed. Results showed that the prevalence of childhood stunting declined from 49.4% in 1998–99 to 34.9% in 2015–16. Over the same period, the prevalence of childhood underweight declined from 41.9% in 1998–99 to 33.1% in 2015–16. (...)

Minority Ethnic Groups in Computer Science Research.Swati Agarwal, Nitish Mittal & Ashish Sureka - 2017 - Acm Sigcas Computers and Society 47 (2):5-15.
Ensuring racial and ethnic diversity in any field including computer science research is important to maintain a positive and prosperous society. Policy makers and government at the national and international level can take appropriate actions and intervene to elevate minorities based on empirical evidence and facts. We present empirical evidence on scholarly paper contributions in the field of computer science by thirteen ethnic groups. We analyze authorship of thousands of papers from a well-known bibliographic database in computer science and various (...)

The Juggling Act: Managing Work Family Conflict and Job Satisfaction in Academicians.Swati Bijawat - 2013 - Journal of Human Values 19 (2):189-201.
In today’s competitive world, the pressures of work have been escalating and there is a growing feeling among employees that the demands of work begin to dominate life and a sense of work life imbalance is felt. Thus, finding a balance between work and life in today’s swift world presents a major challenge to both the employer and employee. This article seeks to explore the variation among men and women academicians with regards to overall job satisfaction, job stressors and work (...)

Reading Together: “Communitarian Reading” and Women Readers in Colonial Bengal.Swati Moitra - 2017 - Hypatia 32 (3):627-643.
In this article, I seek to consider this practice of “communitarian” reading—reading aloud, reading together—as a defining aspect of the cultures of reading among Bengali women in the nineteenth century. I wish to contest the privileging of “silent” reading as a “modern” mode of reading and the subsequent celebration of the protean incorporeality of the “silent” reader, in the works of prominent scholars of readership, arguing that the privileging of “silent” reading as the predominant “modern” mode of reading does not (...)

Whether due to simplicity or hypocrisy, the question of access to patient data for biomedical research is widely seen in the public discourse only from the angle of patient privacy. At the same time, the desire to live and to live without disability is of much higher value to the patients. This goal can only be achieved by extracting research insight from patient data in addition to working on model organisms, something that is well understood by many patients. Yet, most (...)

Globalization of the Indian economy has dramatically influenced social life in India. The expansion of the middle class is said to have occurred as a consequence of this process. Based on ethnographic research among lower-middle-class families in West Bengal, India, the author examines the apparent paradox between women's positive perceptions of empowerment and the overall negative impact of structural adjustment policies on women. Many scholars argue that globalization has been detrimental to women due to growing structural gender inequalities, but many (...)

This book presents a rethinking of the world legacy of Mahatma Gandhi in this era of unspeakable global violence. Through interdisciplinary research, key Gandhian concepts are revisited by tracing their genealogies in multiple histories of world contact and by foregrounding their relevance to contemporary struggles to regain the ‘humane’ in the midst of global conflict. The relevance of Gandhian notions of ahimsa and satyagraha is assessed in the context of contemporary events, when religious fundamentalisms of various kinds are competing with (...)

Cosmological Density Perturbations in Newtonian- and MONDian Gravity Scenario: A Symmetry-Based Approach.Amitava Choudhuri & Aritra Ganguly - 2019 - Foundations of Physics 49 (1):63-82.
We investigate the evolution of linear density contrasts obtained with respect to a homogeneous spatially flat Friedman-Lemaître–Robertson–Walker background by solving the density contrast equations governed by Newtonian and MONDian force laws using symmetry-based approach. We find eight-parameter Lie group symmetries for the linear order density perturbation equation for the Newtonian case whereas the density contrast equation follows only one parameter Lie group symmetry in MONDian case. We use Lie symmetries to find the group invariant solutions from invariant curve condition. The (...)

New Evidence on the Impact of the Quality of Prenatal Care on Neonatal and Infant Mortality in India.Ashish Kumar Upadhyay, Abhishek Singh & Swati Srivastava - 2020 - Journal of Biosocial Science 52 (3):439-451.
Evidence on the impact of the quality of prenatal care on childhood mortality is limited in developing countries, including India. Therefore, using nationally representative data from the latest round of the National Family Health Survey, this study examined the impact of the quality of prenatal care on neonatal and infant mortality in India using a multivariable binary logistic regression model. The effect of the essential components of prenatal care services on neonatal and infant mortality were also investigated. The results indicate (...)

Is Unintended Birth Associated with Physical Intimate Partner Violence? Evidence From India.Srinivas Goli, Abhishek Gautam, Md Juel Rana, Harchand Ram, Dibyasree Ganguly, Tamal Reja, Priya Nanda, Nitin Datta & Ravi Verma - 2020 - Journal of Biosocial Science 52 (6):907-922.
A growing number of studies have tested the association between intimate partner violence and the unintendedness of pregnancy or birth, and most have suggested that unintendedness of pregnancy is a cause of IPV. However, about nine in every ten women face violence after delivering their first baby. This study examined the effects of the intendedness of births on physical IPV using data from the National Family Health Survey. The multivariate logistic regression model analysis found that, compared with women with no (...)

  40. Wittgenstein's Tractatus: A Preliminary. [REVIEW]M. M. - 1971 - Review of Metaphysics 25 (1):125-125.
According to Ganguly, the main thesis of the Tractatus is that description is the true function of language. Language describes reality and this is all it can do; and whenever we try to make language do anything else, the result will be nonsense. This explains, for example, Wittgenstein's contention that the general form of all propositions is: 'This is how things stand'. Thus, the general form of all propositions is nothing but the general form of all descriptions. And anything (...)

    Philosophy in India, 1967-73.J. N. Mohanty - 1974 - Review of Metaphysics 28 (1):54 - 84.
Indian philosophical thought has been deeply metaphysical, and it is no surprise that, faced with the anti-metaphysical thrust of contemporary philosophy, one of the issues uppermost in the minds of Indian thinkers is the question of the possibility of metaphysics. In recent philosophical literature, two tendencies are discernible: an attempt to defend metaphysics in the traditional grand style, and a concern with the idea of descriptive metaphysics as an alternative. For the former, we may turn to Kalidas Bhattacharyya and J. (...)
