  1. Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle.Paul Busch, Teiko Heinonen & Pekka Lahti - unknown
Heisenberg's uncertainty principle is usually taken to express a limitation of operational possibilities imposed by quantum mechanics. Here we demonstrate that the full content of this principle also includes its positive role as a condition ensuring that mutually exclusive experimental options can be reconciled if an appropriate trade-off is accepted. The uncertainty principle is shown to appear in three manifestations, in the form of uncertainty relations: for the widths of the position and momentum distributions in any quantum state; for the (...)

Minimalism and Maximalism in the Study of Shared Intentional Action.Matti Heinonen - 2016 - Philosophy of the Social Sciences 46 (2):168-188.
I distinguish two kinds of contribution that have been made by recent minimalist accounts of joint action in philosophy and cognitive science relative to established philosophical accounts of shared intentional action. The “complementarists” seek to analyze a functionally different kind of joint action from the kind of joint action that is analyzed by established philosophical accounts of shared intentional action. The “constitutionalists” seek to expose mechanisms that make performing joint actions possible, without taking a definite stance on which functional characterization (...)

Commutative POVMs and Fuzzy Observables.S. Twareque Ali, Claudio Carmeli, Teiko Heinosaari & Alessandro Toigo - 2009 - Foundations of Physics 39 (6):593-612.
In this paper we review some properties of fuzzy observables, mainly as realized by commutative positive operator valued measures. In this context we discuss two representation theorems for commutative positive operator valued measures in terms of projection valued measures and describe, in some detail, the general notion of fuzzification. We also make some related observations on joint measurements.

Notes on Joint Measurability of Quantum Observables.Teiko Heinosaari, Daniel Reitzner & Peter Stano - 2008 - Foundations of Physics 38 (12):1133-1147.
For sharp quantum observables the following facts hold: (i) if we have a collection of sharp observables and each pair of them is jointly measurable, then they are jointly measurable all together; (ii) if two sharp observables are jointly measurable, then their joint observable is unique and it gives the greatest lower bound for the effects corresponding to the observables; (iii) if we have two sharp observables and their every possible two outcome partitionings are jointly measurable, then the observables themselves (...)

Strongly Incompatible Quantum Devices.Teiko Heinosaari, Takayuki Miyadera & Daniel Reitzner - 2014 - Foundations of Physics 44 (1):34-57.
The fact that there are quantum observables without a simultaneous measurement is one of the fundamental characteristics of quantum mechanics. In this work we expand the concept of joint measurability to all kinds of possible measurement devices, and we call this relation compatibility. Two devices are incompatible if they cannot be implemented as parts of a single measurement setup. We introduce also a more stringent notion of incompatibility, strong incompatibility. Both incompatibility and strong incompatibility are rigorously characterized and their difference (...)

    Semiotico-Translation-Theoretical Reverberations Revisited.Ritva Hartama-Heinonen - 2012 - Sign Systems Studies 40 (3/4):299-318.
This article examines translating and translations primarily from a semiotic viewpoint. The focus is, on the one hand, on a semiotic re-reading of certain translation-theoretical suggestions, and on the other hand, on a translation-theoretical re-reading of certain semiotic suggestions. Other proposals that receive a revisiting discussion include, for instance, Roman Jakobson’s translation typology and Umberto Eco’s notion of semiotics as a theory of the lie. The approach adopted in the present article advocates a serious re-reading and attitude, but even more, (...)
