Deterring Unethical Behavior in Online Labor Markets.Andrew Reffett, Jonathan Grenier, Tim Eaton & William Brink - 2019 - Journal of Business Ethics 156 (1):71-88.
This study examines how codes of conduct, monitoring, and penalties for dishonest reporting affect reporting honesty in an online labor market setting. Prior research supports the efficacy of codes of conduct in promoting ethical behavior in a variety of contexts. However, the effects of such codes and other methods have not been examined in online labor markets, an increasingly utilized resource that differs from previously examined settings in several key regards. Leveraging social norm activation theory, we predict and find experimental (...)

  5. Merit, Aesthetic and Ethical.Marcia Muelder Eaton - 2001 - Oxford University Press.
To "look good" and to "be good" have traditionally been considered two very different notions. Indeed, philosophers have seen aesthetic and ethical values as fundamentally separate. Now, at the crossroads of a new wave of aesthetic theory, Marcia Muelder Eaton introduces this groundbreaking work, in which a bold new concept of merit where being good and looking good are integrated into one.
  6. The Other Boston Busing Story: What`s Won and Lost Across the Boundary Line.Susan E. Eaton - 2001 - Yale University Press.
METCO, America’s longest-running voluntary school desegregation program, has for 34 years bused black children from Boston’s city neighborhoods to predominantly white suburban schools. In contrast to the infamous violence and rage of forced school busing within the city in the 1970s, METCO has quietly and calmly promoted school integration. How has this program affected the lives of its graduates? Would they choose to participate if they had it to do over again? Would they place their own children on the bus (...)

  8. Talk to Her.A. W. Eaton (ed.) - 2008 - Routledge.
Pedro Almodóvar is one of the most renowned film directors of recent years. Talk to Her is one of the most discussed and controversial of all his films. Dealing principally with the issue of rape, it also offers profound insights into the nature of love and friendship whilst raising important philosophical and moral questions in unsettling and often paradoxical ways. This is the first book to explore and address the philosophical aspects of Almodóvar’s film. Opening with a helpful introduction by (...)

Businesses that produce bioscience products—gene tests and therapies, pharmaceuticals, vaccines, and medical devices—are regularly confronted with ethical issues concerning these technologies. Conflicts exist between those who support advancements in bioscience and those who fear the consequences of unfettered scientific license. As the debate surrounding bioscience grows, it will be increasingly important for business managers to consider the larger consequences of their work. This groundbreaking book follows industry research, development, and marketing of medical and bioscience products across a variety of fields, (...)

  11. Where Ethics and Aesthetics Meet: Titian's Rape of Europa.A. W. Eaton - 2003 - Hypatia 18 (4):159 - 188.
Titian's Rape of Europa is highly praised for its luminous colors and sensual textures. But the painting has an overlooked dark side, namely that it eroticizes rape. I argue that this is an ethical defect that diminishes the painting aesthetically. This argument-that an artwork can be worse off qua work of art precisely because it is somehow ethically problematic-demonstrates that feminist concerns about art can play a legitimate role in art criticism and aesthetic appreciation.

The Subtle Politics of Organ Donation: A Proposal.S. Eaton - 1998 - Journal of Medical Ethics 24 (3):166-170.
Organs available for transplantation are scarce and valuable medical resources and decisions about who is to receive them should not be made more difficult by complicated calculations of desert. Consideration of likely clinical outcome must always take priority when allocating such a precious resource otherwise there is a danger of wasting that resource. However, desert may be a relevant concern in decision-making where the clinical risk is identical between two or more potential recipients of organs. Unlikely as this scenario is, (...)

After summarizing approaches taken previously to the problem of the determination of truth-Value of statements constituting literary works (ryle, Russell, Quine, Strawson, Davidson, Et. Al.) the author argues for a treatment of the problem based upon the linguistic status of such statements as translocutions and their relation to the context in which they occur.

Incorporating the Other: Val Plumwood's Integration of Ethical Frameworks.David Eaton - 2002 - Ethics and the Environment 7 (2):153-180.
Val Plumwood's recent attempt to formulate a "contextual" theory of vegetarianism that integrates concern for animals, ecology, and unprivileged societies involves heavy criticism of Carol J. Adams. Plumwood's theory, although claiming to be "contextual," involves an unnecessary degree of abstraction both in its engagement with Adams's thought and in its attempt to formulate a universal narrative. Plumwood consistently misrepresents Adams's work and demonstrates an alignment with dominant discourses that favor "meat." By representing the rejection of these discourses as alienated and (...)

    About Beauty: A Thomistic Interpretation.Marcia Muelder Eaton - 1986 - Idealistic Studies 16 (2):173-173.
Armand A. Maurer begins by pointing out that for St. Thomas Aquinas beauty, like truth and goodness, is one of the primary transcendental modes of being. But unlike truth and goodness, beauty is actually discussed very little by him. Remarks on it are scattered throughout his works. Maurer wants to show that, “A careful reading of his comments on beauty reveal that, in his view, beauty, no less than truth and goodness, is ultimately grounded, not on the forms or essences (...)
