Human Mate Choice and the Wedding Ring Effect.Tobias Uller & L. Christoffer Johansson - 2003 - Human Nature 14 (3):267-276.
Individuals are often restricted to indirect cues when assessing the mate value of a potential partner. Females of some species have been shown to copy each other’s choice; in other words, the probability of a female choosing a particular male increases if he has already been chosen by other females. Recently it has been suggested that mate-choice copying could be an important aspect of human mate choice as well. We tested one of the hypotheses, the so-called wedding ring effect—that women (...)

  6. 4-D Objects and Disposition Ascriptions.Tobias Hansson Wahlberg - 2009 - Philosophical Papers 38 (1):35-72.
Disposition ascription has been discussed a good deal over the last few decades, as has the revisionary metaphysical view of ordinary, persisting objects known as 'fourdimensionalism'. However, philosophers have not merged these topics and asked whether four-dimensional objects can be proper subjects of dispositional predicates. This paper seeks to remedy this oversight. It argues that, by and large, four-dimensional objects are not suited to take dispositional predicates.

Responding to recent concerns about the reliability of the published literature in psychology and other disciplines, we formed the X-Phi Replicability Project to estimate the reproducibility of experimental philosophy. Drawing on a representative sample of 40 x-phi studies published between 2003 and 2015, we enlisted 20 research teams across 8 countries to conduct a high-quality replication of each study in order to compare the results to the original published findings. We found that x-phi studies – as represented in our sample (...)

Venerable or Vulnerable: Ageing and Old Age in JRR Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings.D. B. Hogan & A. M. Clarfield - 2007 - Medical Humanities 33 (1):5-10.
An underappreciated aspect of The lord of the rings by JRR Tolkien is in how the author dealt with death, longevity and ageing in the work. During his early years, Tolkien endured first the passing of both parents and then the deaths of most of his friends during the First World War. It was not surprising that a search for the meaning of life and death became a preoccupation of Tolkien. Tolkien’s Roman Catholic faith underpinned his thoughts about mortality. He (...)

  12. Frei sein, frei handeln. Freiheit zwischen theoretischer und praktischer Philosophie.Diego D'Angelo, Sylvaine Gourdain, Tobias Keiling & Nikola Mirkovic - 2013 - Alber.

    Rings Which Admit Elimination of Quantifiers.Bruce I. Rose - 1978 - Journal of Symbolic Logic 43 (1):92-112.
We say that a ring admits elimination of quantifiers, if in the language of rings, {0, 1, +, ·}, the complete theory of R admits elimination of quantifiers. Theorem 1. Let D be a division ring. Then D admits elimination of quantifiers if and only if D is an algebraically closed or finite field. A ring is prime if it satisfies the sentence: ∀ x ∀ y ∃ z (x = 0 ∨ y = 0 ∨ xzy ≠ 0). Theorem (...)

Paths in Heidegger's Later Thought.Günter Figal, Diego D'Angelo, Tobias Keiling & Guang Yang (eds.) - 2020 - Indiana University Press.
If one takes Heidegger at his word then his philosophy is about pursuing different "paths" of thought rather than defining a single set of truths. This volume gathers the work of an international group of scholars to present a range of ways in which Heidegger can be read and a diversity of styles in which his thought can be continued. Despite their many approaches to Heidegger, their hermeneutic orientation brings these scholars together. The essays span themes from the ontic to (...)

Groups Definable in Ordered Vector Spaces Over Ordered Division Rings.Pantelis E. Eleftheriou & Sergei Starchenko - 2007 - Journal of Symbolic Logic 72 (4):1108 - 1140.
Let M = 〈M, +, <, 0, {λ}λ∈D〉 be an ordered vector space over an ordered division ring D, and G = 〈G, ⊕, eG〉 an n-dimensional group definable in M. We show that if G is definably compact and definably connected with respect to the t-topology, then it is definably isomorphic to a 'definable quotient group' U/L, for some convex V-definable subgroup U of 〈Mⁿ, +〉 and a lattice L of rank n. As two consequences, we derive Pillay's conjecture (...)

La question de la mémoire de la Shoah se pose, pour l'Allemagne, de façon très particulière. Why Quarks Are Unobservable.Tobias Fox - 2009 - Philosophia Scientiae 13 (2):167-189.
This essay deals with the question whether quarks—the basic components of matter and one of the youngest confirmed particles in high energy physics—can be observed directly or indirectly. First, I shall discuss earlier definitions of “observation” in physics suggested by Grover Maxwell, Bas van Fraassen, and Dudely Shapere. Then, I shall compare their results with a new consideration of the idea of “observation” in physics and the distinction between direct and indirect observation. One of the ways that quarks appear in experimental (...)

Providing a concise definition of hope is challenging. Psychologists alone have proposed 26 theories of hope and 54 definitions thereof. The difficulty of finding a universal definition of hope was summed up by the philosopher Joseph Godfrey who admitted, "I'd rather have hope than be able to define it". Part of the problem is that the concept is the object of scrutiny across many different scholarly disciplines, each of which have their own, sometimes divergent, methodologies and interests in the concept.
