Constructing the social.Theodore R. Sarbin & John I. Kitsuse (eds.) - 1994 - Thousand Oaks, Calif.: Sage Publications.
If you are looking for a clear, concrete overview on social constructionist research and analysis, look no further than Constructing the Social. This timely volume pools the talents of many leading psychologists and sociologists, who in each case ground theory into practical examples. Contributors demonstrate that human beings are principally social agents rather than passive reactors that process information. Each contributor analyzes the historical and cultural contexts implicit in a wide range of key issues including anxiety, the family, intelligence, aging, (...)

Toward the Obsolescence of the Schizophrenia Hypothesis.Theodore Sarbin - 1990 - Journal of Mind and Behavior 11 (3-4):259-284.
The disease construction of schizophrenia is no longer tenable. That construction originated during a period of rapid growth of biological science based on mechanistic principles. Crude diagnostis measures failed to differentiate absurd, unwanted conduct due to biological conditions from atypical conduct directed to solving existential or identity problems. The construction was communicated - in the absence of solid evidence - by medical practitioners by means of symbolic, rhetorical, and organizational acts. The patient came to be regarded as an object without (...)

    The narrative quality of action.Theodore R. Sarbin - 1990 - Theoretical and Philosophical Psychology 10 (2):49-65.
My purpose in this paper is to extend the argument developed in several recent essays that the narrative is a useful—if not indispensable—root metaphor for psychology. Narrative as a root metaphor fits nicely into the world view of contextualism—a world view that is parallel to the mechanistic paradigm. As developed so eloquently by Stephen Pepper, contextualism draws its energy from the root metaphor of the historical act. To me, the historical act and narrativity are near-synonyms, if not identical notions. Both (...)

The social construction of truth.Theodore R. Sarbin - 1998 - Journal of Theoretical and Philosophical Psychology 18 (2):144-150.
Examines the American Psychological Association Memories of Childhood Abuse report, which contains the opposing view points of 2 subgroups of the working group that produced the report, the clinicians and the researchers. The author views the Final Report of the working group as an exercise in alternative methods of truth making. In the development of his analysis, the author explains his choice of the term "truth-making" rather than "truth finding." The process of constructing truths and the possibility of resolving contrary (...)

: At the center of Catherine's Malabou's study of Hegel is a defense of Hegel's relation to time and the future. While many readers, following Kojève, have taken Hegel to be announcing the end of history, Malabou finds a more supple impulse, open to the new, the unexpected. She takes as her guiding thread the concept of "plasticity," and shows how Hegel's dialectic--introducing the sculptor's art into philosophy--is motivated by the desire for transformation. Malabou is a canny and faithful reader, (...)

    Refuse Archeology: Virchow—Schliemann—Freud.Dietmar Schmidt & tr Gledhill, Andrew - 2001 - Perspectives on Science 9 (2):210-232.
: In the early twentieth century, psychoanalysis tries to investigate a specific logic of the appearance and the incident of what is taken to be unintended in everyday communication and human behavior. What before hardly seemed to be worth systematic research, now becomes a privileged field, in which the meaningful signs of a hidden and unwelcome past appear. For representing this new field of research Freud often makes use of archaeological metaphors. But in quoting the knowledge and the techniques of (...)

Spectacular Reproduction: Ron’s Angels and Mechanical Reproduction in the Age of ART.Valdimar Tr Hafstein - 2006 - Journal of Medical Humanities 28 (1):3-17.
Ron Harris captured the popular imagination in October 1999 with a website where he auctioned off the ova of fashion models to the highest bidder. This article treats the controversy surrounding Harris’ site within a dual frame of critical theory’s approach to reproduction and a folkloristic approach to discourse. The website fuses traditional narrative motifs and structures with the logic of advertising, seventies television, family-values rhetoric, and the fertility industry. I argue that the great attraction of ronsangels.com is that it (...)

: Frege's philosophical writings, including the "logistic project," acquire a new insight by being confronted with Kant's criticism and Wittgenstein's logical and grammatical investigations. Between these two points a non-formalist history of logic is just taking shape, a history emphasizing the Greek and Kantian inheritance and its aftermath. It allows us to understand the radical change in rationality introduced by Gottlob Frege's syntax. This syntax put an end to Greek categorization and opened the way to the multiplicity of expressions producing (...)

: Two major philosophers of the twentieth century, the German existential phenomenologist Martin Heidegger and the seminal Japanese Kyoto School philosopher Nishida Kitarō are examined here in an attempt to discern to what extent their ideas may converge. Both are viewed as expressing, each through the lens of his own tradition, a world in transition with the rise of modernity in the West and its subsequent globalization. The popularity of Heidegger's thought among Japanese philosophers, despite its own admitted limitation to (...)
