Predicting University Performance in Psychology: The Role of Previous Performance and Discipline‐Specific Knowledge.Lucy R. Betts, Tracey J. Elder, James Hartley & Anthony Blurton - 2008 - Educational Studies 34 (5):543-556.
Recent initiatives to enhance retention and widen participation ensure it is crucial to understand the factors that predict students' performance during their undergraduate degree. The present research used Structural Equation Modeling to test three separate models that examined the extent to which British Psychology students' A‐level entry qualifications predicted: their performance in years 1–3 of their Psychology degree, and their overall degree performance. Students' overall A‐level entry qualifications positively predicted performance during their first year and overall degree performance, but negatively (...)

Cagas, Javier Fernández-Montalvo, Youngjun Choi & Montse C. Ruiz - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic people have endured potentially stressful challenges which have influenced behaviors such as eating. This pilot study examined the effectiveness of two brief interventions aimed to help individuals deal with food cravings and associated emotional experiences. Participants were 165 individuals residing in United Kingdom, Finland, Philippines, Spain, Italy, Brazil, North America, South Korea, and China. The study was implemented remotely, thus without any contact with researchers, and involved two groups. Group one participants were requested (...)

    Long-Term Potentiation: What's Learning Got to Do with It?Tracey J. Shors & Louis D. Matzel - 1997 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 20 (4):597-614.
Long-term potentiation (LTP) is operationally defined as a long-lasting increase in synaptic efficacy following high-frequency stimulation of afferent fibers. Since the first full description of the phenomenon in 1973, exploration of the mechanisms underlying LTP induction has been one of the most active areas of research in neuroscience. Of principal interest to those who study LTP, particularly in the mammalian hippocampus, is its presumed role in the establishment of stable memories, a role consistent with descriptions of memory formation. Other characteristics (...)

    LTP: Memory, Arousal, Neither, Both.Tracey J. Shors & Louis D. Matzel - 1997 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 20 (4):634-645.
The neurophysiological phenomenon of LTP (long term potentiation) is considered by many to represent an adequate mechanism for acquiring or storing memories in the mammalian brain. In our target article, we reviewed the various arguments put forth in support of the LTP/memory hypothesis. We concluded that these arguments were inconsistent with the purported data base and proposed an alternative interpretation that we suggested was at least as compatible with the available data as the more widely held view. In doing so, (...)

The Status of LTP as a Mechanism of Memory Formation in the Mammalian Brain.Tracey J. Shors & Louis D. Matzel - 2000 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 23 (2):288-290.
Long-term potentiation (LTP) is a long-lasting increase in synaptic efficacy that many consider the best candidate currently available for a neural mechanism of memory formation and/or storage in the mammalian brain. In our target article, LTP: What's learning got to do with it?, we concluded that there was insufficient data to warrant such a conclusion. In their commentaries, Jeffery and Zhadin raise a number of important issues that we did not raise, both for and against the hypothesis. Although we agree (...)

This forced parents, players, and coaches to reconsider how they interacted with, and supported, one another. The aims of the present study were to explore the perceptions of players, parents, and coaches regarding how they interacted and collaborated with one another during the COVID-19 pandemic to support wellbeing and performance, and; to identify opportunities to enhance workings (...)

Mental and Physical Training with Meditation and Aerobic Exercise Improved Mental Health and Well-Being in Teachers During the COVID-19 Pandemic.Docia L. Demmin, Steven M. Silverstein & Tracey J. Shors - 2022 - Frontiers in Human Neuroscience 16.
Teachers face significant stressors in relation to their work, placing them at increased risk for burnout and attrition. The COVID-19 pandemic has brought about additional challenges, resulting in an even greater burden. Thus, strategies for reducing stress that can be delivered virtually are likely to benefit this population. Mental and Physical Training combines meditation with aerobic exercise and has resulted in positive mental and physical health outcomes in both clinical and subclinical populations. The aim of this pilot study was to (...)

    Aristotle’s Logic of Education. [REVIEW]Leo J. Elders - 2000 - Review of Metaphysics 54 (2):416-416.
In the introductory first chapter the author states his conviction that Aristotle’s theory of learning, at the center of which stands the apodeictic syllogism, is inadequate because partial. Chapter 2 is a balanced survey of Aristotle’s syllogistic, which does not serve the purpose of discovery, but is intended to turn into science knowledge already acquired. All learning proceeds from preexisting knowledge which is structured by demonstration. Next Bauman turns to Plato’s theory of learning as present in the Meno: learning is (...)

    The Ethics of Aquinas. [REVIEW]Leo J. Elders - 2003 - Review of Metaphysics 57 (1):175-176.
It is always difficult to present a collection of essays, and this the more so if written by twenty-eight authors. However, this imposing and beautifully printed volume has been planned very carefully, so that the various contributions create a fairly complete study of Aquinas’s thought in the Second Part of the Summa theologica. The essays have approximately the same length and are accompanied by numerous scholarly endnotes. L. E. Boyle recalls that St. Thomas’s intention was to connect moral theology to (...)

With this collection of translations of Aristotle’s main works, accompanied by commentaries, General Editors J. L. Ackrill and Lindon Judson have made another step forward. In book 8 of the Physics, Aristotle develops his doctrine of the First Unmoved Mover, the efficient cause of all movements and process in the world. It is commonly agreed upon that this book constitutes a unit with books 2 to 6. It is later than the other books and the greater part of the De (...)

It is not without a certain emotion that one opens this book devoted to the memory of a great scholar of medieval thought who worked and lived in the certainty that there cannot be a conflict between the Christian faith and science. In a significant essay, Benedict M. Ashley defends the idea of the philosophy of nature as continuous or identical with natural science. Ashley does allow, however, for so many divergences between philosophy of nature and natural science due to (...)

New Images of Plato: Dialogues on the Idea of the Good.L. J. Elders - 2005 - Review of Metaphysics 58 (4):909-910.
Reale points out that the good and the demiurgic intelligence are radically distinct, a conclusion denied by J. Seifert in the last paper of the book. Fourteen characteristics of the idea of the good are listed by T. A. Szlezák. It is obvious, he argues, that the theory of principles of Plato’s unwritten doctrines is not identical with what Republic 6 and 7 say about the good, but there is no real opposition. In the next paper, however, H. W. Ausland, (...)

    Essays on the Philosophy of Socrates.Leo J. Elders - 1994 - Review of Metaphysics 47 (3):603-603.
The sixteen essays of this book attempt to make recent scholarly conclusions on Socrates readily available. In his introduction the editor gives a survey of the Socratic problem. The next essay examines the precise meaning of the charges leveled against Socrates; not accepting the traditional gods comes foremost. Charles H. Kahn argues in favor of moving the Laches, Charmides, Lysis and Euthrypho from their traditional place before the Gorgias to the group of later dialogues because of their Platonic content--J. Beversluis (...)

    Vernunft Und Glaube.Leo J. Elders - 1992 - Review of Metaphysics 45 (4):865-866.
Kutschera's book is an attempt at a positive answer to the question whether religious faith is still justifiable. To this effect the author examines problems of the science of religion, philosophical theology, and religious beliefs. He asserts that Aquinas's natural theology is a thing of the past, for the Aristotelian philosophy used by Thomas has no validity ; recent debate has shown that the proofs of the existence of God are not conclusive. Unfortunately, Kutschera presents no solid evidence; the short (...)

This book is number 28 in a series of translations of medieval texts published by Marquette University. Together with an edition of the De bono et malo, it is the only English translation available of the works of the important theologian William of Auvergne. The De Trinitate is a key text for William's metaphysics and his theological methodology. The translators deserve praise for having made William's thought more accessible.

The Philosophical Significance of Immortality in Thomas Aquinas. [REVIEW]Leo J. Elders - 2002 - Review of Metaphysics 55 (3):645-645.
Dr. Oguejiofor argues that Aquinas’s philosophical anthropology “is not much more than his philosophy of the human soul.” In his well-documented book he first gives a survey of the positions of philosophers on our question during the earlier part of the thirteenth century paying special attention to Albert the Great. Albert hesitated to accept Aristotle’s definition of the soul as the act of the body, believing that it is not compatible with the soul’s immortality. The second chapter explains this definition (...)
