    Re-Exploring Wang Yangming's Theory of Liangzhi : Translation, Transliteration, and Interpretation.Tzu-li Chang - 2016 - Philosophy East and West 66 (4):1196-1217.
Admittedly there exists a considerable amount of contemporary literature on liangzhi that, to a certain extent, provides us with fruitful and insightful perspectives into Wang Yangming’s doctrine. And the majority of this literature, as if by tacit agreement, focuses on the interconnection between liangzhi and knowledge, whether it be innate, original, perfect, or moral knowledge. While this academic endeavor is credited with pushing forward studies of Chinese thought, it is the task of philosophy always to engage in the examination of (...)

Lao-Tzu's Treatise on the Response of the Tao: A Contemporary Translation of the Most Popular Taoist Book in China.Li Ying-Chang - 2010 - Yale University Press.
Considered by many Taoists and non-Taoists alike to be an essential guide to living, Lao-tzu's Treatise on the Response of the Tao was written by the twelfth-century sage Le Ying-chang. Presenting foundational teachings and practices of the Action and Karma school of Taoism, it is replete with folk stories illustrating the teachings and an introductory essay that discusses the more esoteric meaning of the passages. Told with clarity and depth, these seminal Taoist teachings offer guidance on leading a balanced (...)

    A Short Comment on Mo-Tzu's Epistemology Based on "Three Criteria".Chang Li-Wen - 1979 - Contemporary Chinese Thought 10 (4):47-54.
Mo Tzu was active in ancient China's academic world during the late Spring and Autumn period and the early Warring States period when the slave system collapsed and the feudal system was gradually established. During this time of radical social change, class antagonism and struggle were acute, and ideological and theoretical struggles were fierce. According to the social classes to which they belonged, thinkers from different social classes and strata gave different answers for the existing social problems. As a result, (...)

The Question of the Authenticity of Kuo Hsiang's Preface to the Chuang Tzu.Wang Li-ch'I. - 1979 - Contemporary Chinese Thought 10 (4):22-30.
The thirty-three sections of the Chuang Tzu annotated by Kuo Hsiang of the Chin dynasty were published during the period of the Northern Sung dynasty. Meanwhile, a preface allegedly by Kuo Hsiang was also printed in the book. The preface is as follows:Chuang Tzu was a man who had good knowledge of the origins of things in the universe and avoided no fantastic ideas. His remarks are hard to understand yet pertinent to phenomena. Any remark which is hard to understand (...)

Warping Least-Squares Inversion for 4D Velocity Change: Gulf of Mexico Case Study.Chang Li, Mark Meadows & Todd Dygert - 2019 - Interpretation 7 (2):SB23-SB31.
We have developed a new trace-based, warping least-squares inversion method to quantify 4D velocity changes. There are two steps to solve for these velocity changes: dynamic warping with phase constraints to align the baseline and monitor traces and least-squares inversion for 4D velocity changes incorporating the time shifts and 4D amplitude differences. We have demonstrated this new inversion workflow using simple synthetic layered models. For the noise-free case, phase-constrained warping is superior to standard, amplitude-based warping by improving trace alignment, resulting (...)

The Effects of Managers' Moral Philosophy on Project Decision Under Agency Problem Conditions.Cheng-Li Huang & Bao-Guang Chang - 2010 - Journal of Business Ethics 94 (4):595 - 611.
This study derives an improved model of managers' decision-making behavior regarding possibly failing projects. Instead of adopting cognitive moral development used by Rutledge and Karim (Accounting, Organization and Society 24, 173-184, 1999) this investigation uses the agency theory framework to consider individual moral philosophy for the improvement of decisions regarding possibly failing projects. This research hypothesizes that a manager with low relativism has a stronger tendency to discontinue a possibly failing project than one with high relativism when agency problem are (...)

  13. In Loving Hands: How Founders’ Affective Commitment Strengthens the Effect of Organizational Flexibility on Firms’ Opportunity Exploitation and Performance.Christopher Pryor, Chang Li, Anastasia V. Sergeeva & Iana S. Pryor - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
Is flexibility or formality more useful for organizations that are pursuing improved performance? Organizational structure scholars offer opposing answers to this question, and empirical results have been mixed. Our study contributes to this research by describing a mediational model that links organizational flexibility to performance via opportunity exploitation. Specifically, we argue that flexible firms are able to exploit a greater number of opportunities, which, in turn, can improve performance. We also argue that the indirect effect of flexibility on performance via (...)

A comprehensive knowledge of the development and connectivity of fractures and vugs in carbonate reservoirs plays a key role in reservoir evaluation, ultimately affecting the gas prediction of this kind of heterogeneous reservoir. The carbonate reservoirs with fractures and vugs that are well developed in the Longwangmiao Formation, Sichuan Basin are selected as a research target, with the fractal dimension calculated from the full-bore formation microimager image proposed to characterize the fractures and vugs. For this purpose, the multipoint statistics algorithm (...)

Operation-Specific Lexical Consistency Effect in Fronto-Insular-Parietal Network During Word Problem Solving.Chan-Tat Ng, Tzu-Chen Lung & Ting-Ting Chang - 2021 - Frontiers in Human Neuroscience 15.
The practice of mathematical word problem is ubiquitous and thought to impact academic achievement. However, the underlying neural mechanisms are still poorly understood. In this study, we investigate how lexical consistency of word problem description is modulated in adults' brain responses during word problem solution. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging methods, we examined compare word problems that included relational statements, such as “A dumpling costs 9 dollars. A wonton is 2 dollars less than a dumpling. How much does a wonton (...)

This research tests a model of employee helping behavior (a component of Organizational Citizenship Behavior, OCB) that involves a direct path (Intrinsic Motives → Helping Behavior, the Good Samaritan Effect) and an indirect path (the Love of Money → Extrinsic Motives → Helping Behavior). Results for the full sample supported the Good Samaritan Effect. Further, the love of money was positively related to extrinsic motives that were negatively related with helping behavior. We tested the model across four cultures (the USA., (...)

Changing Ideological-Political Orientations in Chinese Moral Education: Some Personal and Professional Reflections.Li Maosen - 2011 - Journal of Moral Education 40 (3):387-395.
Moral education in the People?s Republic of China is dominated by ideological-political orientations. However, in the last 30 years China has experienced extensive economic reform, bringing about many social changes, such as decreasing reliance on the state-owned workplace, increasing private property ownership and enhancement of the rule of law. Such changes have inevitably influenced personal, societal and ideological values, and consequently had an impact on individual moral beliefs and behaviour. In this paper I analyse the decline of socialist ideology, revolutionary (...)

Near-Salt Stress-Induced Seismic Velocity Changes and Seismic Anisotropy and Their Impacts on Salt Imaging: A Case Study in the Kuqa Depression, Tarim Basin, China.Yunqiang Sun, Gang Luo, Yaxing Li, Mingwen Wang, Xiaofeng Jia, Cheng Chang & Rui Zhang - 2020 - Interpretation 8 (3):T487-T499.
It has been recognized that stress perturbations in sediments induced by salt bodies can cause elastic-wave velocity changes and seismic anisotropy through changing their elastic parameters, thus leading to difficulties in salt imaging. To investigate seismic velocity changes and seismic anisotropy by near-salt stress perturbations and their impacts on salt imaging, taking the Kuqa depression as an example, we have applied a 2D plane-strain static geomechanical finite-element model to simulate stress perturbations and calculate the associated seismic velocity changes and seismic (...)

We aggregate different dimensions of corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities following the stakeholder framework proposed in Clarkson (Acad Manag Rev 20(1), 92–117, 1995) and present consistent evidence that CSR strengths targeting different stakeholders have their unique impact on firm risk and financial performance. Institutional CSR activities that target secondary stakeholders are negatively associated with firm risk, measured by total risk and systematic risk. Technical CSR that target primary stakeholders are positively associated with firm financial performance, measured by Tobin’s Q, ROA, (...)

In this article, we propose that giving in cash and non-cash differ in their relation with the giving firm’s future corporate financial performance and only cash giving is associated with future CFP. Using a novel dataset from ASSET4 that differentiates corporate giving over a sample period of 2002–2012, we examine three competing hypotheses: agency cost hypothesis that cash giving reflects agency cost and destroys value for shareholders, investment hypothesis that cash giving is an investment by management that aims for better (...)

The index is updated quarterly and is comprehensive enough to include 45 criteria reflecting working conditions, impact of product, impact of production, and company institutional impact. Thus, it captures many dimensions of firms’ ethical performance that are not accounted for in previous research. Our research encompasses a joint test of the value relevance (...)

In this study, we examined the role of culture on early adolescents’ social reasoning about peer exclusion. A total of 80 U.S. and 149 Taiwanese early adolescents independently completed a social reasoning essay about peer exclusion. Analyses of the essays based on social-moral theories showed that U.S. students tended to reason about peer exclusion based on social conventional thinking whereas Taiwanese students were more attentive to personal and moral issues. Despite this difference, both groups of students referred to some common (...)

The Impact of Operational Diversity on Corporate Philanthropy: An Empirical Study of U.S. Companies. [REVIEW]Jean D. Kabongo, Kiyoung Chang & Ying Li - 2013 - Journal of Business Ethics 116 (1):49-65.
This paper investigates the impact of diversity on corporate philanthropy. Compared to previous studies that have considered the influence of board diversity and CEO gender on corporate philanthropy, this study introduces the concept of operational diversity, which is the implementation of diversity programs at management, employee, and supply chain levels, and further, it explains why operational diversity influences corporate philanthropy, by using the premises of resource dependence theory. Second, this study also investigates the influence of board diversity on corporate philanthropy. (...)
