There is limited knowledge about sleep in adolescents with elevated levels of anxiety treated within primary health care settings, potentially resulting in sleep problems not being sufficiently addressed by primary health care workers. In the current study self-reported anxiety, insomnia, sleep onset latency, sleep duration, and depressive symptoms were assessed in 313 adolescents referred to treatment for anxiety within primary health care. Results showed that 38.1% of the adolescents met criteria for insomnia, 34.8% reported short sleep duration, and 83.1% reported (...) long sleep onset latency. Total anxiety symptoms were related to all sleep variables after controlling for age and sex. Furthermore, all anxiety symptom sub-types were associated with insomnia and sleep onset latency, whereas most anxiety subtypes were associated with sleep duration. Adolescents’ depressive symptoms accounted for most of the anxiety-sleep associations, emphasizing the importance of depressive symptoms for sleep. However, anxiety was associated with insomnia and sleep onset latency also among youth with low levels of depressive symptoms. The findings suggests that primary health care workers should assess sleep duration, sleep onset latency, and insomnia in help-seeking adolescents with anxiety. (shrink)

In this paper we analyse scientists' perspectives on the release of genetically modified crops into the environment, and the relationship between their perspectives and the context that they work within, e.g. their place of employment, funding of their research and their disciplinary background. We employed Q-methodology to examine these issues. Two distinct factors were identified by interviewing 62 scientists. These two factors included 92 per cent of the sample. Scientists in factor 1 had a moderately negative attitude to GM crops (...) and emphasised the uncertainty and ignorance involved, while scientists in factor 2 had a positive attitude to GM crops and emphasised that GM crops are useful and do not represent any unique risks compared to conventional crops. Funding had a significant effect on the perspective held by the scientists in this study. No ecologists were associated with factor 2, while all the scientists employed in the GM-industry were associated with this factor. The strong effects of training and funding might justify certain institutional changes concerning how we organise science and how we make public decisions when new technologies are to be evaluated. Policy makers should encourage more interdisciplinary training and research and they should make sure that representatives of different disciplines are involved in public decisions on new technologies. Heinrich Rickerts Der Gegenstand der Erkenntnis ist eines der bedeutendsten, aber auch umstrittensten erkenntnistheoretischen Werke seiner Zeit, von dem z.B. William James mit "höchster Bewunderung" spricht. Rickert war ein Denker mit spezifischen, klaren und festen Positionen, von denen er nur wenige im Laufe seines Denkwegs wirklich aufgab. Gleichwohl hat er an vielen seiner Schriften beständig - teils über Jahrzehnte - gearbeitet und Textänderungen angebracht, meist begriffliche bzw. sprachliche Klärungen. Das wohl beste Beispiel für sein Vorgehen ist das vorliegende Werk. Der (...) Gegenstand der Erkenntnis hat von 1892 bis 1928 sechs Auflagen erlebt und wuchs von 91 auf 460 Seiten; Rickert hat über 36 Jahren in jeder Auflage Änderungen vorgenommen. Um diese kontinuierliche Denk-Arbeit nachzuzeichnen, wird dieses Werk (in Abweichung von den anderen Bänden der Rickert-Ausgabe) in einer historisch-kritischen Edition vorgelegt, in der die beiden wichtigsten Auflagen (die zweite und die sechste) im gesamten Text präsentiert werden und die anderen Auflagen aus den Apparaten ersichtlich sind. Die Edition enthält neben dem umfassenden Editionsbericht Druckfehlerverzeichnisse, ausführliche Herausgeber-Anmerkungen, Personenregister, ein Wortregister sowie anschauliches Material zu Rickerts Textarbeit, aus dem Rickerts Denkentwicklung hervorgeht. The paper tests the hypothesis that cultural and social background is far more influential to form preferences about policy than the level of fact-based knowledge a person possesses. The data for the case study stem from a web-based survey among a representative sample of the adult population in Norway. The degree of knowledge of agriculture in this paper is operationalized through questions on five key characteristics of Norwegian agriculture that frequently arise in the public discussion. The results show that the (...) amount of fact-based knowledge of agriculture to a very little extent explains differences within the sample. The cultural background of respondents is much more suited to explain agricultural policy preferences. Knowledge, however, shifts the attention from food price issues towards the delivery of public goods. The results allow us to hint at hot cognition as a possible explanation for such findings.
