    How Polycomb‐Mediated Cell Memory Deals With a Changing Environment.Federica Marasca, Beatrice Bodega & Valerio Orlando - 2018 - Bioessays 40 (4):1700137.
Cells and tissues are continuously exposed to a changing microenvironment, hence the necessity of a flexible modulation of gene expression that in complex organism have been achieved through specialized chromatin mechanisms. Chromatin-based cell memory enables cells to maintain their identity by fixing lineage specific transcriptional programs, ensuring their faithful transmission through cell division; in particular PcG-based memory system evolved to maintain the silenced state of developmental and cell cycle genes. In evolution the complexity of this system have increased, particularly in (...)

    Fictional Names Without Fictional Objects.Eleonora Orlando - 2008 - Critica 40 (120):111-127.
In this paper, I criticize Mark Sainsbury's proposal concerning the semantic analysis of fictional discourse, as it has been put forward in chapter 6 of his Reference without Referents. His main thesis is that fictional names do not refer, and hence statements containing them are genuinely false and must be interpreted in terms of true paraphrases, arrived at on a case-by-case basis. In my opinion, the proposal has a problem derived from the fact that the relation between some problematic examples (...)

The Fourth Wave: The Ethics of Corporate Downsizing.John Orlando - 1999 - Business Ethics Quarterly 9 (2):295-314.
While the business ethics literature has devoted a tremendous amount of discussion in recent years to the question of whether the corporate manager has obligations to parties other than shareholders, it has failed to apply any of its insights to particular ethical concerns. This leaves the corporate manager with almost no guidance for resolving particular dilemmas he or she encounters. I bridge the gulf between theory and practice by focusing on the issue of corporate downsizing. I argue that corporate downsizing (...)

General Terms and Rigidity: Another Solution to the Trivialization Problem.Eleonora Orlando - 2014 - Manuscrito 37 (1):49-80.
In this paper I am concerned with the problem of applying the notion of rigidity to general terms. In Naming and Necessity, Kripke has clearly suggested that we should include some general terms among the rigid ones, namely, those common nouns semantically correlated with natural substances, species and phenomena, in general, natural kinds -'water', 'tiger', 'heat'- and some adjectives -'red', 'hot', 'loud'. However, the notion of rigidity has been defined for singular terms; after all, the notion that Kripke has provided (...)

Oneiric Activity in Schizophrenia: Textual Analysis of Dream Reports.Marco Zanasi, Fabrizio Calisti, Giorgio Di Lorenzo, Giulia Valerio & Alberto Siracusano - 2011 - Consciousness and Cognition 20 (2):337-348.
This work evaluated the structure of dreams in people affected by schizophrenia. The verbal reports of 123 schizophrenic patients were compared with 123 dream reports from a control group. In accordance with the Jungian conceptualization of, dreams as texts, dream reports were assessed using textual analysis processing techniques.Significant differences were found in textual parameters, showing that the dreams reports of schizophrenic patients differ from those of the control group. It is thus possible that schizophrenia probably underlies changes in the oneiric (...)

Fictional Names and Literary Characters: A Defence of Abstractism.Eleonora Orlando - 2016 - Theoria: Revista de Teoría, Historia y Fundamentos de la Ciencia 31 (2):143-158.
This paper is focused on the abstractist theory of fictional discourse, namely, the semantic theory according to which fictional names refer to abstract entities. Two semantic problems that arise in relation to that position are analysed: the first is the problem of accounting for the intuitive truth of typically fictive uses of statements containing fictional names; the second is the one of explaining some problematic metafictive uses, in particular, the use of intuitively true negative existentials.Este artículo se ocupa de la (...)

In The Rationality of Perception, Susanna Siegel defends the claim that beliefs can influence our perceptions. Faulty beliefs make our experiences irrational. This explains why the biases some people hold are so tenacious. The authors point out weaknesses in Siegel’s argument.

Enriching Documents by Linking Salient Entities and Lexical-Semantic Expansion.Mohsen Pourvali & Salvatore Orlando - forthcoming - Journal of Intelligent Systems.
This paper explores a multi-strategy technique that aims at enriching text documents for improving clustering quality. We use a combination of entity linking and document summarization in order to determine the identity of the most salient entities mentioned in texts. To effectively enrich documents without introducing noise, we limit ourselves to the text fragments mentioning the salient entities, in turn, belonging to a knowledge base like Wikipedia, while the actual enrichment of text fragments is carried out using WordNet. To feed (...)

Soil Conservation in Cuba: A Key to the New Model for Agriculture. [REVIEW]Paul L. Gersper, Carmen S. Rodríguez-Barbosa & Laura F. Orlando - 1993 - Agriculture and Human Values 10 (3):16-23.
Most aspects of agriculture in Cuba prior to 1989 were comparable to California: a high energy input, conventional agriculture (based on what the Cubans now call the “classical model”) in which little was done to protect the nation's soils from erosion, loss of fertility, salinization, and other forms of degradation. In stark contrast the new “Alternative Model,” which has been rapidly replacing the previous model since 1989, emphasizes soil conservation and rehabilitation and the general improvement of the nation's soils as (...)

Double Voicing and Personhood in Collaborative Life Writing About Autism: The Transformative Narrative of Carly’s Voice.Monica Orlando - 2018 - Journal of Medical Humanities 39 (2):217-231.
Collaborative memoirs by co-writers with and without autism can enable the productive interaction of the voices of the writers in ways that can empower rather than exploit the disabled subject. Carly's Voice, co-written by Arthur Fleischmann and his autistic daughter Carly, demonstrates the capacity for such life narratives to facilitate the relational interaction between writers in the negotiation of understandings of disability. Though the text begins by focusing on the limitations of life with autism, it develops into a collaboration which (...)

    Abduction, Realism and Ethics.Eleonora Orlando - 2001 - Theoria 16 (2):331-352.
In this paper, I am concerned with the possibility of applying an abductive strategy in founding ethical realism. First, I criticize Harman’s position, according to which abduction, though useful for founding scientific realism, does not serve to found ethical realism. Secondly, I examine Sturgeon’s critique, according to which distinctively moral facts do constitute the best explanations of the moral evidence. Finally,I conclude that Sturgeon is right in as far as the ontological status of moral properties is concerned but his answer (...)

    Files for Fiction.Eleonora Orlando - 2017 - Acta Analytica 32 (1):55-71.
In this essay, I appeal to the mental file approach in order to give an anti-realist semantic analysis of statements containing fictional names. I claim that fictive and parafictive uses of them express conceptual, though not general, propositions constituted by mental files, anchored in the conceptual world of the corresponding fictional story. Moreover, by positing a referential shift determined by the presence of a simulative referential intention characteristic of those uses, it is possible to take them to be true with (...)

    Introduction: Referential Descriptions: For and Against.Eleonora Orlando - 2009 - Análisis Filosófico 29 (2):141-142.
In this introduction I start by presenting and examining the main positions on the current debate concerning the semantic analysis of sentences containing definite descriptions. As is known, the debate in question has started off with Russell's proposal, which has been initially criticized by both Strawson and Donnellan. Nowadays, waters are divided on this issue: some philosophers, representing the so-called univocality approach, defend Russell's original analysis, according to which all definite descriptions are quantificational expressions, whereas there are others who, following (...)

General Term Rigidity as Identity of Designation: Some Comments on Devitt's Criticisms.Eleonora Orlando - 2009 - Análisis Filosófico 29 (2):201-218.
In his paper "Rigid Application", Michael Devitt defends a particular version of the socalled 'essentialist conception' of rigidity for general terms, according to which rigid general terms are rigid appliers, namely, terms that if they apply to an object in any possible world then they apply to that object in every possible in which the object exists. Devitt thinks that the thereby defined notion of rigidity makes for an adequate extension to general terms of Kripke's notion, originally defined for singular (...)

The mindfulness literature, now extended beyond strict Buddhist and psychotherapeutic contexts, has trended in some important directions, giving rise to both conflict and opportunity. In terms of mindfulness-directed effort, which academic disciplines are outpacing which? Has the degree of disembeddedness from Buddhist contexts changed over time? What is the relationship between trends in mindfulness, meditation, and Buddhism-oriented literature? Through a bibliometric analysis of mindfulness literature within academic journals, several patterns emerge. Results support a substantial increase in ‘academic effort’ toward mindfulness, (...)
